You'd be surprised how affordable getting on the water can be if you're willing to learn to work on it yourself. Craigslist and FB are full affordable projects - Not to sound douchey but having a boat of any size is a different level. You stop caring about what labels are on your clothes or how old your car is. You then say - "nah I've got a boat Id rather spend my funds on"

Great video, we both absolutely loved watching you and Marianne enjoying yourself on the sea. In a world of motorboats that can appear so superficial, so caviar and champagne, I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see someone so pleasingly normal, so cheese and ham sandwiches and so relatable moving in that rarified world. You know your stuff and clearly ain't no fool when it comes to boating but you still present it in a fun, excitable and engaging manner. I still rate your series of charter boat videos as some of the best things I've seen on KZbin and it's great to see that you haven't lost that 'everyman' magic that you so readily possess. I found myself addicted after discovering a total of three hours Blues || touring, not to talk about boat viewing. As a Norwegian I appreciate your naming rivers and towns around the coast but also by canal boating but are totally lost when it comes to understanding where on this British planet you are. I also love when you walk the marina areas but rather like time to watch all the boats than the pontoons maybe. I grew up with boat life in Norway and misses it all here in Manchester, so whatever floating on water is interesting on a sunny day and all the great “boat-people” we meet. We are a special breed I think, trying to help as a great attitude and thanks to the both of you and if possible I wanted to ask about your opinions when it comes to my next boat. Thank you Asle

When I bought my first boat I learned the navigation marks on my first trip with a mobile phone in my hand. ;-) My wife hated the idea of having a boat but nowadays we go boating like 2-3 days a week and she loves it. This did bring back memories for me Nick and made me laugh. In the late 90's, my friend and I holidayed in Corfu and we hired a boat for a day. We had a couple of ladies with us and found a secluded cove, so I asked my friend to drop the anchor in the water, so he did. We all swam off the boat and I noticed the boat was slowly drifting towards some rocks, so I just checked with my friend that he had dropped the anchor - he had thrown the whole thing in the water, rope and all, without tying it off, so the anchor and rope were at the bottom of the bay and the boat was unsecured. We had to dive down to retrieve it. 20+ years on, we still laugh about that. What a plonker!!

What an super spot to anchor and the perfect boat for the job. Our boat is in Menorca but we started motor boating just down the coast in Plymouth, but rarely got further east than Dartmouth. Something I learned about anchoring is that most depth sounders are set up to read the depth under your lowest point, ie your propeller which is probably about a metre below the surface. So if your depth sounder reads 4 metres the actual depth is 5 metres which of course affects the amount of chain you need to let out. You calculated this using a multiplication of 3 which is fine if anchoring for lunch remaining on board, but if you were stopping overnight I would multiply by 4. I love your boat reviews and think this series about how to go boating shows that the dream can become a reality. Carry on the good work. John Parker

Jamie Speight: without stealing Nick’s thunder and his info for the forthcoming video, just a few figures from my experience. Budget 10% of the vessel’s purchase price for parking (mooring and Drystack fees in boating parlance). Fuel and insurance - a whole video on that. Safety kit and consumables. Then the one everyone overlooks, or might try to, regular SERVICING! if it breaks down at sea the RNLI are for saving lives not to be the RAC or AA. That’s not just one video.... Nice boat Nick, we’re out tomorrow and just waiting for the Solent restaurants and pubs to open.

Please do let us know running costs but also address the age old saying which we have all heard? “There are only two happy days of boat ownership....the day you buy it and the day you sell it”. Is that really true?

Nick, lovely video, thank you for sharing. And you are right: nice hat. Question: whenever we used to take out my gradads Draco 1700, we had to lift the engine cover to air out the engine. Is that a thing of the past, nowadays? Greetings from Switzerland - Oliver

I am not sure what concerns me more about this video - that the UK reverses channel markers or that you like Marmite :-D
@alanj9391

It's not the UK that reverses channel markers, most of the world uses the same IALA (A) system as the UK.

Absolutely awesome to see this. I LOVE the giant yachts and super yachts, but see a little slice of 'how to boat' is super cool. Would love to see more of these types of real world situations. They need to start giving you yachts for the weekend so you can review running those by yourself as well!
