I’m blown away. As a retired accountant, I could see a fleet of accountants, bookkeepers, tax accountants, cost accountants, IT professionals, all working behind the scenes to keep the business afloat. The overheads associated with boatbuilding are just enormous. Project managers, sales people, office staff, marketing staff, legal staff, the usual HR types, naval architects, designers, engineers, auditors, the list goes on. Load all these on top of the people actually doing the building, and you have one expensive boat. Don’t forget the executives and board members. They also add to the cost of a yacht. So do the sales commissions. 2,700 staff? Holy Moley!

At the beginning of the 1960's I started life as an apprentice joiner and ended up making the furniture in a Caravan manufacturers. There was a system of preparation by wood machinists but no where near to the same level. Each carpenter was always given the same pieces to assemble so he could make each item almost with is eyes closed on auto pilot. No doubt a similar practise takes place in this massive furniture shop. I am suitably impressed

The one stand-out point there is the idea that they want nothing rattling, even after years of use. So long after the boat is sold and Princess have already pocketed their money, they still want to ensure that the (second, third, fourth) owner has no issues with any carpentry. That is truly above and beyond.

I hope this man is well paid. His knowledge my well be irreplaceable. I understand why these yachts are so expensive. The engineering that goes in to them is astounding. But, just as impressive is the skill required to actually build them is incredible. It would be interesting to see a similar tour of a "lesser" brand's operation. I would like to compare and contrast processes used. Also, seeing the operations at a brand like Heesen would be equally fascinating. I would be particularly interested in seeing how Northern European builders achieve perfection in fairing and paint work. All on all a very fascinating series. It is a nice change from a simple tour of a boat. I have certainly gained not only an appreciation for the reason yachts cost so much, but why it takes so long to build them. I caught the line where he said the drawers and other pieces are cut from the same piece of wood so they can keep the grain patters in the layout which is extremely cool but also, several years back now, in the very first video i watched on this channel or about boats in general, nick actually made mention of it and even zoomed in with the camera to show it better. I remember him woundering outloud if it was on purpose or not because that level of detailing would be absolutely insane. The boat was a Princess. From that video on, every tour nick does, ive looked to see of i could tell if the grain patterns line up and that is one of the measures i use for deciding how much time and effort were put into the build. They are clearly not all built the same but i love that i just had a full circle moment where the gentleman doing the tour said that it is 100 percent on purpose and it just made my day.
