Great topic! Thank you so much for both the good and bad side of 3Ds. I have considered them in the past and watching this video you made good points I had not realized were an issue. I was about to think they aren't worth the effort until your last comment! I love the cave idea. Keep up the great work Zenzo.

This is why I stopped trying to hide the tubes to my canister filters or hang on back filters and just paint them whatever color the background was and leave them in front of the background and place the background directly on the back glass. eliminate so much hassle!

My biggest concern with these is definitely detritus and other rot accumulating behind the background and becoming difficult to remove. Just look at how much gunk gathers around decorations when you move them for cleaning and a cloud of crap just appears in its place.

what about making the space behind it not necessarily open to fish getting through, but open to allow for the heater/air/filter which gives a small gap to allow for maintenance and checking for anyone stuck back there?

Ty Zenzo your vid came exactly at the right moment. My Rockzolid hard polyester 3D background is the only thing that gave me worried, due to fishwaste building up and fish getting behind there. Even my large Trout managed to get behind there this week. I removed the grids i made when i installed it. Now they can swim behind it and like you said, just have to let it go..

What color is the Universal Rocks Kiama background? And is a slim background (aside from the base sticking out)? Thx

It’s kind of a dark sand/light brown color. It is more 3D than the slim backgrounds. There is enough space behind it for heaters, filtration, etc.

I like the look of the 3D backgrounds, but I don't think I'll ever get one. I have nano tanks and I don't want to take up even that little bit of extra space, and I like the option of changing my backgrounds quickly and easily when I want to change things up. I do think they look great in bigger tanks with big fish though. 👍❤👍

@tazawatanks I thought based on your title you were going to address all types of backgrounds, not just 3D. I have watched your series on how to make them and think they are amazing. Hey man, I currently have a 3d background from aqua decor that covers 3 sides on my tank. I don’t have any holes in it and keep the outtake and intakes hoses of the filter in front. So I see you have your air stone behind your background. I’m wondering if that’s a good method? Or is it better to have it in the front/main water column?
@TazawaTanks2 жыл бұрын
I think it is better overall to be in front. I have mine in the back next to my heater, otherwise, I would probably find a place in front of the background.

Great video! Some friends who have artificial rocks in the aquarium, made of mortar, then painted and resined, told me that the mbunas scraped off the resin and scraped off part of the mortar stones. Wouldn't that be a risk to the fish's health? I already have all the techniques to produce huge (but light) stones made of mortar, mounted in a styrofoam mold, then painted, resined and finally the styrofoam is removed from inside them with the use of a thermal blower. My fear is that my mbunas will scrape sand, even though it is resistant.

@@TazawaTanks thanks for the response. Yeah it probably would be a pain to clean and to keep it against the glass. I used a product to apply it to the outside that you rub all over the background and then stick to the glass and squeegee the air pockets n extra product out and it really keeps it in place. Way better than tape..

I love the way those backgrounds look, but my biggest tank is a ten gallon, so it would take up too much space. I can just imagine how frustrating it must have been to have to take the tank apart. I can also imagine how mad those fishies were about losing their new space. I love that you put tunnels into your DIY background. With the way my life is going I probably won’t ever have a tank bigger than 20 gallons, but watching your videos is so enjoyable. Thanks!

Why not just use the 3D background as a filter? Cut a couple of holes in the corner, close up the background with some filter sponge in the other side and fill the cavity with bio-elements. Add a powerhead and presto, you have a filter that will run for years without the need for cleaning.

I had a 3D background years ago, it looked great the first month. Three months later it was covered with ugly black hair algae everywhere. It was impossible to remove the algae. The 3D background occupied a lot of space in the tank. 4 months later I trashed the background. I will never buy another 3D background again. You are better off with a printed background you tape behind your tank.

Tell me the pros and cons of having a regular background everybody does not have money like you for 3D so be irrelevant
@TazawaTanks3 жыл бұрын
Pros of a regular background is that it often makes the fish stand out better when viewing, it can make the fish feel more secure, and you can change them easily for any scene or color. The cons: they are not always easy to attach to make look perfect because water and dirt can get between it and the glass. They can sometimes get bent or wrinkled, and you'd have to replace it.
