You will get bacteria and waste, detritus in the back of the background no matter what. Unless you glue it with silicone, you will need to do maintenance cleaning it once in a while. Guess what? Cutting holes in the background, like you did, will allow way more waste and detritus to get back there. The filter will not suck everything going through those holes.
