There are many types of freshwater snails available to us hobbyists and today we'll cover a bunch. Mystery snails, ramshorn snails, bladder snails, pond snails, Malaysian trumpet snails, rabbit snails, nerite snails, and of course assassin snails all have there own set of unique pros, cons, and quirks. Shrimps are banned by my wife too. A story about an incident which led to my tank inhabitants being closely monitored by my wife. Waking up one morning, she pulled back the covers to reveal a red item near her feet. I knew immediately it was one of my Red Cherry Shrimps but played dumb while I tried to work out how it had got from the fishtank, all the way through the house, up the stairs, into the bedroom and into the bed. Yes, she had managed to pick up between her toes, an obviously dead shrimp off the floor (where it had ended up after escaping overnight) and carried it through the house, upstairs into the bed. When I stopped laughing and told her (which I soon discovered was a big mistake) she ran to the shower and spent the next 20 minutes scrubbing her toes clean. Now I am under strict instructions to only bring 'nice looking' fish into the house. David from UK.

I noticed in my old marine tank that the micro snails would get into the filter chambers, anyway. They're like these tiny snail ninjas that can get into anything. They seemed to survive just fine in there, though. Never jammed the impellers, either, like sand could - maybe due to their buoyancy. Whenever I changed or cleaned the filter media I would pick them out and throw them back in the tank.

another great vid man I'm super pro snail (loved the skits btw) I even like bladder snails since pea puffers love em and they deal with excess food really well also theyre the only snail ive managed to keep with shrimp. I definatly recommend assassin snails to deal with snail problems because theyre really easy to remove when the jobs done but one criticism nerite eggs can stay on the glass/driftwood for quite some time so they need work to remove apart from that loved the vid as usual keep up the good work

UPDATE: I was finally able to ID my siltsnails/pebblesnails, and they are a common snail in Central Florida called a Smooth-ribbed Hydrobe, a.k.a. Tryonia aequicostata. There are endemic species like these in every aquatic environment! Not much info is available on them online simply because they’re so common (not endangered and not invasive) that nobody cares. You’d have to investigate locally by poring through those dry, boring library tomes dedicated to local species, or through a local expert on gastropods, like I did. I still love my tiny, sand grain-sized hydrobes! They team up and eat all the rotting goop, even with a messy Oscar in the tank.

Really enjoyed the video, came here from the co-op. You kinda missed the Mini-ramshorns, as they are visually different from regular ramshorns and in my tanks seem to stay much smaller, smaller than even the bladder snails. The sideways shell is neato though.

I have bladder snails in my tank (came in with the plants). Polulation is stable and not too much as long as I don't overfeed They seem to cleanup dead plant matter mostly. As long as they don't take over my tank I don't mind them, they're my cleanup crew. 😁

I live in Central Florida. I have micromollusks, a species (working on ID) of pebblesnail that only grows a few millimeters in size. I found them in my container pond on my patio (I live near conservation land and a larger pond), and transferred a few into my declining (due to age) African Cichlid tank (60 gallons) two years ago when there were about five fish left. I am now down to one Maingano cichlid and have introduced a juvenile Tiger Oscar three months ago, and the snail population exploded (Oscars are hella messy), but even so, they're so minuscule you only notice the ones on the glass and darker rocks (they blend with the sand).

Update: These pebblesnails are hella cool. It's like having aquatic ants (since they're so numerous and tiny) that come out and clean up everything. I think they even eat the fish poop, and I know most snails don't really do that, but these seem to to it, because I never find any poop in the tank, anymore. Once they finish eating, most retreat into the deco. I think they would be a good option if you want a snail that's not very visible, since they are slightly larger than a sand grain, adult size. I'm pretty sure that for those living in the southern states, you don't have to do anything other than visit a lake shore nearby to find some. Stick them in a quarantine tank for a few weeks (or the outdoor pond, if there are not already some that snuck in there).

I think snails are a must in my Aquariums because they eat leftover Food and dead plants. They are also a great Food for my Labidochromis, they really like to eat bladder snails and ramshorn snails.

This was hilarious! Does Uncle Ryan (man of wisdom) ever feel like strangling Surburban Ryan (sunvisor)? This sounds exactly like countless conversations I have had with my friend-since-childhood (over 40 years). The bad jokes, the misunderstanding everything, and the just being annoying. And the next day he asks all the same stupid questions over again. My wife wanted to know what was so funny cus I was laughing so hard. This is great aquarium comedy! Oh, as a "side" note, this was extremely informative as well. I've never cared for snails, but now that I'm doing some planted tanks I'm learning to deal with them. Everyone loves my ramshorns - I have 3 or 4 different colors that came with the plants - and everyone admires them over the fish and plants.

Japanese Trapdoor Snails? I just have some pink ramshorn snails. They are great for helping get a tank cycled. Great for fry tanks to clean up uneaten food. And I feed them to my pea puffers and the big ones to my turtles for a treat.

Never heard of rabbit snails before! Very cool. I have nerites which I bought on purpose, and I got one ramshorn and one bladder snail which were volunteers on a plant...and so of course I now have thousands. Another great video! I believe the community needs these types of informative videos periodically for beginners to happen upon. I wouldn't have an aquarium without snails. In fact I've got a 100gal pond set up specifically for snails and guppies. The snails feed my puffers and the guppies are just for fun, and maybe profit at the end of pond season.

Ok, well the guy you had on your video was totally right when he said the snails kill fish. I have had a tropical tank for many years and even let it go so badly when I got cancer that I didn't think anything would live in it. My angel got twice as big my pleco got to be 14 inches and my coulie loaches ran the tank like a school of earthworms as big as 5,6 inches. So after I recovered, I decided to clean it. Well my cat bit the air supply goes to the 5 gal bucket and my 4 inch angel died at that point but verything else lived through it. When all was done I bought 2 new goramis 2 swordtails and a couple of striped coulie loach. And a babie pleco about anninch if that and yellow,, and 3 snails. About 2 weeks ago my gorami was tail up so he was gone. Then my swordtail was just gone. Next day the other was gone I started watching closer. Next morning, I seen the bigger of the snails on the bottom and my babies place was right in front of it . Pleco wasn't moving or I should say couldn't move. The snail had it, or should I say was killing it. It was kind of wiggling for a moment but whenI got the net to separate, it was dead by then. So I read up on how snails kill their prey. They have barbs that sting it with poison in their barbs and kill it. So you werenwrong about the snails not killingnfish,,, YES THEY DO.

Hey! I noticed in your tank in this video is very clear and has a large piece of wood in it, I recently got my own tank and bought a piece of wood for it but I just can’t seem to keep my tank clear. I have a filter, and I clean it regularly so I think the discoloration must be from the wood. Any suggestions to keep my tank clearer?

IT IS from that wood. Amazon river fish -especially TETRAS- WILL looove it! To remove the colour, use carbon in ur filter (it's chemical filter). U also have to take away that wood, put it in water for a month, changing the water from time to time, till it gets colourless. THEN U put it back in the tank.

OK so I have a problem. I have 2 rabbit snails. Love those guys, just bought a new tank which is cycling and I found bladder snails roaming around. Now eventually I want to move my rabbit snails over so if I get a couple of assassin snails I can't keep them because I don't want my rabbit snails to get eaten up. I am tempted to get the assassins in there to deal with the bladder snails first then remove them, thoughts?

Had an aquarium when I was 11, had a few Mystery snails in it and one Rambo female cherry shrimp that survived this hellhole of a tank. I quit when the tank was overrun by probably a few hundred Mystery snails. Snails are useful, but only in experienced hands, these breed even in bad water qualities and accidents may happen to an inexperienced aquarist (Happened to me at least) Great video though

I just found out our fish tank has a bunch of tiny, little snails in them! I was surprised! I had no idea they were there and where they come from! I was told they came from the seaweeds put in. There were SO MANY! I saw a very few of them near the surface of the water and thought they're just something else (I don't know why I was thinking that I could've just look because there's nothing that could've looked like "something inconcerning). Two days ago, our little bristlenose pleco died suddenly. Maybe that's related to the snails. Anyway, there are snails all over, even the ground.

I'm pro snail. They're awesome looking when they get big and help with upkeep. It was pretty crazy watching a snail eat dead fish but you know........ NATURE!!!!! Love my nerites and apple "mystery" snails. Had an assassin that was sold to me by a pet store as a nerite. Well in a few weeks it killed all my other snails, bred like crazy in my 10 gallon tank. Fresh water, no salt. I had not seen it for weeks, thought it was dead. To be fair, I had not done research and now I know a lot more than I did. Well, when I put 2 new nerites in, they stayed tight in their shells, and out from behind the rock came the assassin. I plucked him out, put him in a baggie of aquarium water and took him back to the pet store. They took him back. When I got home there was a baby snail coming up out of the gravel, had to be an assassin....the nerites were still locked up in their shells. I took 90% of the gravel out and sifted it for baby snails which had to be assassins. I stopped counting at 60. Got rid of them, the nerites and now a gold and blue apple snail are quite happy. Lessons learned.

Yes, 35 embers look great as they stay very close together, much more than I thought they would. I have been considering getting another 35 as they are tiny, but I dont want to overstock and I think that it would take me close to my limit. I will have to think about it - but will probably go for them anyway! I really enjoy your videos, especially when you show us around your fish room, it is superb and I am so jealous!

I don't doubt that you know your snails, but I can tell you from first hand observation that some snails *do* kill fishes in the tank. I didn't believe My mother at first (this was when I was in My early 20s and was back with her between places where I lived), but sure as hell, she was right! I can't even tell you the species, but I've wanted to identify it for a while. The snail was orange, with a mostly round shell, and I want to say that it was somewhere between the sie of a quarter and a silver dollar. The snail would climb up the wall of the tank, and then it would lean back and fan out its body. It would wait in this posture for a guppy to swim between its body and the glass, and then it would quickly wrap around the guppy and draw it into its mouth, head-first. I had found your video while trying to find one regarding snails that do eat fishes in tanks. Have you got any idea what kind of a snail it is?

Assassin snails: don't get to many, they eat like crazy. Best practice is to have them in a separate tank so that your "feeder" snails don't run out too soon. If you only have one tank don't get them.

Good tip about a second tank. I've always had more than one tank with them and "shuffle them" around however if you did just have one tank you're right, it would be a pain and they can become cannibalistic i've heard if there isn't much food

I thanks for this video that's exactly what I needed I have had an explosion of bladder snails they're not really cute when there was only one or two it wasn't bad but now there's a ton of them on the bottom of the tank and I wonder if it could make my fish sick but from what you described not so much. So thanks to you I will be getting a couple of assassin snails thanks you really helped me out!

I'm so glad I bought a mystery snail to help control some of the algae in my tank. He's super aesthetic and gets along well with my crawfish because he's too big and slow to be bothered with. Despite that, he can scoot when he wants to! He's super soothing to watch :)

I have regular snails , started adding plants and in three aquariums many of them but regular ones, thought they could eat my new fish since two is missing without trace... oh and they are fast like they swimming , I have some plants that float on top and that’s where they breed .... I do feed my gold fish once a month with little bit of plants and their eggs.... since they are all over 🐌

I love snails. I have a bladder snail population in my planted 40BT, I also have 2 mystery snails, 6 nerite snails. I also have what must be a gold mystery snail, I got from Petco. They called a gold Inca snail. I do alot of projects with plants. The bladder snails come in handy.

Nice little snail collection you have going on there! Yea I believe Inca snail and mystery snail are the same thing. Another name is apple snail although I think those might be a slightly different species that gets a little larger

Hate snails, got some “free” ones on some plants, couldnt get rid of them, so got assassin snails, problem now dealt with and they dont look bad in the tank.

Does snail mean the tank is cycled? I set up a new aquarium and was doing a fishless cycle when they appeared. Does this mean the tank is ready and can support fish since it can support snails?

I would say no - it does not guarantee your tank is cycled. Just like a fish may live in an non cycled aquarium for some time, a snail may do the same. It does not mean this can support them. The only real way to tell is by measuring for ammonia and then nitrates/nitrites however if you see algae then you're usually good to go.

They can sot still for a bit but If it’s still hasn’t moved it probably has passed. If I notice a snail not moving you can always pick it out of the tank and smell it. You’ll know right away 🤢

Ryan? You have two channels? Hey I loved this!! I have Red Ramshorn snails in one tank with two mystery snails and when the Guppies were spawning I fed a bit heavier and the population really exploded, but as I decrease the feeding the population drops off. In my other tank I have Malaysian Trumpet Snails. I was kind of stupid because I ordered them along with Subwassertang and Java Moss. I ordered five, he sent 25 yeah duhhhh but I see them turning the substrate. They are in a tank that will have shrimp one day so I am thinking I will have to do a major trap and relocate prior to shrimp coming. Neither tank has ever had a nitrogen level. They are fairly well planted and I am sure the snails are helping. One of the employees at the LFS warned me snails would eat my plants, I told her only unhealthy pants or I would have none. She said oh! You learn new things all the time. Ryan thanks for this man you always rock sir!!

i have 4-5 inca snails i just noticed some babies the other day but not sure what kind they are yet.. i also have a rabbit snail i almost killed but i think he is doing ok.
