I've got a question: have you done any research on snail genes? Are the baby snails most likely to look like their father or mother? I ask because I recently added an old albino or white snail into a tank with two new snails (one white and one darker shell with white body still) and the two white shells are very actively coupling. The older white guy came from acidic tank and has shell corrosion but is still going strong. ;) Their babies would tend to be white, right? If the brown shell and white shell mate would there be a mixup of colors or would they produce dark shell and white shells separately? Great looking snails, btw. I might be interested in some blue skin or dark(purple) skin? Also, I'm going to look up magenta mystery snails.
@KylesWildWorld6 жыл бұрын
sorry i didnt see this till now, i think we already spoke about this. Just for the record in my experience darker colors seem to be dominant genes , but yes you will get a mix of offspring, browns in my experience have the most dominant genes probably because it is a wild genetic formed over millions of years vs the newer line bred genetics like purples golds and blues ect..

Hi, I’ve only gone 8 minutes into your video and I just want to tell you that I have had my mystery snails for 6 months; never had a fish tank before this. 10. Gallon tank (no heater) and my snails had three batches. All I did was leave them (eggs) where they were hatched above the water line and misted them 2-3 times a day. I ended up with over 400 babies! (I kid you not)! No heater, no checking ph or anything, just kept my tank clean by changing water every 2-3 weeks (tap). I did another 10 gal tank because my mystery snails kept laying eggs and they all hatched! Their eggs were traded at the aquarium store for food, live plants, algae, and calcium for them and my guppies. Had to get a 3rd tank because my guppies had numerous babies also. No previous experience whatsoever. Just did what I felt they’d be happy with. I live in New England and never had a problem. Be safe and happy hatching! 😊🐌🐟

If you don't mind I want to add in some information. If you have a lid like a glass one and you can easily see condensation on it then you shouldn't remove the eggs. Also I've noticed they will lay them any where, like I had one lay on the actual lid facing down. (Note: it was cool cause you could actually see inside one of them. Only one tho). Also if you are running a full on breeding run with multiple generations, I suggest having Orange Sword Tails (I probably misidentified them) with them as the Orange Sword Tails will eat the dead bodies of the snail and leave the shells behind to add Calcium and when the Sword Tails die, the snails eat them. Also if you are doing Blue Mystery Snails, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ADD CALCIUM. I've noticed the Blue Mystery Snails without calcium develop and ugly Paige/Brown that can only be compared to like apple sauce. Also do not freak out if you see a long tube coming out of them going to the surface, that is a breathing tube and it usually comes out when they are being moved from a small tank to a large tank. (Note: I discovered this when I upgraded to a 55 and my first Black Mystery Snail used her tube to stretch out 3 feet towards the surface.) Last thing is don't assume because two snails are getting fancy with each other that the bottom one is a female. I've seen plenty of times where two dude snails will get it on.

all information and experience is gladly welcomed! i have had mine lay on lids facing down as well , it is pretty cool, though my hatching success rates are much better when i use an incubator , i just prefer it since its easier to control the process

So glad I found your channel! I'm basically new. Been enjoying mystery snails for over a year. Had two clutches hatch in the same tank they were laid in. The ones that glided onto the glass, I removed into a goldfish bowl with a small sponge filter. Had about 70 grow out big enough to put back into the original tank. They've done well. Now they're laying clutches. I have 4 now. Each one larger than the last. The first one has been hanging up where she laid it. For a little over 2 weeks. This morning it was missing. I found it laying on the bottom of the tank. And there were about 12 little white baby singe floating pod looking babies with what looks like sort of a sperm tail. Do I leave them all, clutch and all in the tank? Or should I take the fallen clutch and little single guys out and incubate them further. The clutch still looks pink not dark is mold color at all. Help. And thank you again. You're video has really taught me alot I needed to know. You're awesome!

I find using whole bits of coral as decor can help with raising hardness, but not overwhelm the fish. The crushed coral raises it a lot because it has a stupid high surface area for the water to break it down, but whole rocks have nowhere near that amount of surface area and breakdown much slower. Also if you have high PH water the breakdown will be even more slow, if your ph is above 7.5 it won't be that big a change. If it's acidic or slightly basic you might want to still be careful.

I have a zero percent success rate when trying to incubate, but have been wildly successful with just letting the eggsack do its thing on the tank wall. But, my hatchery tank does have a properly fitted lid and the temperature in the tank is very warm (80 to 82F), so just a matter of having a tank that can keep in that heat and humidity.

Another source for clcium you can use those cuttle fish "bones" for birds. All you have to do is remove it from the package, do not use the metal holder, and drop it into the tank. The snails, and shrimp too, will feed off of it as needed. You can also blanche and cool off spinach and kale, both high in calcium, and add those as food to your tank.

I have hard water and I've noticed the snails will feed on the hard water stains at the top of the aquarium; they haven't laid eggs yet, but I assume it helps their calcium needs. That said, I have two snails, and found both of them on the floor today (they survived though). They've been fine enough ever since I got them about a month ago, but I also just recently got some otto's for better clean up. I had them eating a bit of cooked cabbage a few days ago but haven't fed them since. It does seem that one is male and one is female even though they're both about the size of a large grape or cherry, because lately I keep finding one latched on top of the other for a few hours just over the opening of the other snail's shell. Don't know if they want food due to lack of food because of otto's, or if they're trying to lay eggs.

hey man great video and info. I'd like to ask a question if I may. here's my setup, African cichlid tank, about 8 of them juveniles, 2 cray fish, 3 mystery snails, 1 pleco. I generally toss some broccoli in tank and pleco wafers which the cray fish love. I feed sinking shrimp pellets for calcium for the crayfish and snails mainly, so they can shift through the gravel for the tiny remains. I do this in am then in PM I feed cichlid gold sinking pellets which has a bunch of veggies protein. should I be doing something different ? my snails move around at night but I always see them just in side their shells closed up. on occasion I will see one going up tank. dunno if they are trying to breed or escape. thanks in advance for any input
@KylesWildWorld6 жыл бұрын
they might be trying to lay eggs.... but they also breath air so they go to the surface to breath as well. if they are hiding alot in the day time or just in general it may be your fish, most fish will eat their antenna and even their eyes so in defense they may hide untill they starve sometimes. you can always try them in another tank or even a tub and see if the behaviour changes after a week or so .

When it comes to calcium, I have never tried a snello, or used egg shells, or the like. I have lots and lots of cuttlefish bone in my tanks, I add some powdered calcium carbonate from time to time (find it in the hermit crab section of your fish store!), and Hikari crab treats which are very popular with the snails. So my snails get calcium both in the water and as food. Haven't had a single bad shell yet. Would be nice if fish stores would figure out to sell these products as snail and shrimp items in addition to bird (cuttlefish bone) and crab items. Kind of weird I have to go to so many different parts of the pet store to get the things I need just for snails.

While I am only just getting started as a breeder, the first pair of golden mystery snails that kicked me off, which should be about the same age, are also basically the exact same size. The only way I figured out which one was the female was that after separating them, the tank that had the eggsacks was obviously the tank containing the female. I see suggestions that females are a bit darker colored on the whirl, but no, not in my case, my male is darker in the whirl. Size doesn't distinguish them at all. There are no outward distinguishing qualities at all between them. I just got a bit lucky that the female ended up in the tank she did, as the couple of eggsacks laid in the initial tank where they were together had very little success in hatching, I only got 7 snails out of I think it was 5 egg sacks laid in that tank. Then I got ~650 babies hatched out in the tank she ended up in. So clearly the second tank was a lot more suited to hatching eggsacks than the initial tank!

Maybe I have always had boys, but I now have 5 clutches. The three of them all mated again. It's only been a few days in between. I'm worried for them. I know that takes alot out of my females. Lil girl blue has such a big hole in her shell. I bought her like that. They where going to throw her away. In my book everyone and everything gets a chance no matter how bad off or sick they are. But now my male is on his side and bladder snails are crawling on him, and Goldie locks has moved. Is this normal for these guys? I can't get a good answer on if forum. Ppl are telling me everything I do wrong and not how to actually care for them and help be healthy. I feed them beans from a can every day. What else can I do for them? I'm not sure on my water hardness. It hard but in the safe range. My pH is constant between 7.4-7.9 depends on the time of day.
@KylesWildWorld6 жыл бұрын
if they are developing shell problems it is either dietary or environment. if your water is soft or low in kh that can be an issue, you can add crushed coral to the substarte to buffer it, if it is dietary adding foods high in calcium will help, like weekend or vacation fish feeders or crayfish foods
@KylesWildWorld6 жыл бұрын
ide try feeding less since alot of food can make them grow fast and cause shell issues to, and at the same time feed more calcium rich foods.

Thanks in advance - I hope you're still looking here :)

Why
@xdsmastermia6 жыл бұрын
ok, if you push them down do they lay eggs on bottom or die in process?
@KylesWildWorld6 жыл бұрын
the eggs need to be above the water line or they will drown, they also need to be kept humid or the babies cant eat their way out when they hatch

Your voice sounds like Steve-O. How do we clean the tank without hurting or sucking up the babies?

I feed my tank flake food twice a day and I have lots of algea and some times live brine shrimp... Do I need to still feed green beans or is it necessary?
@chloesanimals51234 жыл бұрын
Pets For Life well just about any kind of vegetable works you can feed them cucumber, zucchini, yellow squash, kale, green beans, romaine lettuce, spinach, okra, sweet potato, carrot and the list of vegetables go on I definitely recommend feeding blanched veggies though

Hi- I changed my water yesterday and now all my snails are mostly lifeless... but partly out of their shell and have a lot of mucous attached to them. They look really sick- is there anything I can do? I changed the water again as it seems directly correlated with the water change and now nitrate/nitrite/ammonia is all 0 ppm with ph slighly above 7.

Replace all but 2 filters, 25% water change, activated charcoal is a must for the ammonia/nitrites/nitrates to balance 'ecosystem'...rinse filter media in same tank water you take out for water change..balances it all out
@CharityWaltmon4 жыл бұрын
PH should be at a comfy 7.5-7.7

I have a golden Inca snail that is very large. I bought a very tiny purple mystery snail the other day and then a day later, I see the golden Inca wrapped around the mystery snail. Did they breed ? And will the tiny one die since it’s so small?
@melissajones15643 жыл бұрын
Same with me! My golden one is huge and my others are so small and she climbs all over them and sometimes sits on top of them

How big do they before they lay eggs?
@KylesWildWorld7 жыл бұрын
full grown adult size , so females will get about 1.5 inches roughly in diameter before they lay and males will need to be at least 1in , size if not bigger to fertilize them. females max out around 2.5 + inches in diameter and males max out at 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter, by diameter i mean if you were to place them in said circle size there shell would touch the edges.
