They are NOT prolific breeders. You were lucky enough to get a male and a female Assassin. Plus it takes 6 months before their small clutch of eggs emerge from the substrate as tiny snails. My guess is this would have taken a very long time of incestuous behaviour to produce that many. Nice little money maker you ended up with.

Actually, just to clear something up, and to put it in more scientific terms, the tube sticking out of the top of their heads is called a siphon, and they do not eat with it. Rather, they "breath" through it (bring water across the gills) and sniff for prey with it, scanning back and fourth in search of their next meal. It also acts as a snorkel when they burry themselves in substrate. However, they do have another, different tubular apparatus they do eat with. This is called a retractile proboscis, which is a hollow muscular tube that can be moved around like a tiny elephant trunk. The proboscis shoots out of it's mouth, engorged with blood when it's hungry... sort of like a mouth boner I guess. Anyhow at the tip, the proboscis is equipped with yet another retractable apparatus! This time, it's much smaller and more like a tongue. A scraping tongue, with tiny teeth (denticles) on it. This is called the radula. So, the Assassin Snail literally licks it's prey to death with a rasping toothed tongue shooting out of the tip a big fat mouth boner, rending and slurping up flesh and guts from it's victim, lick by lick. Bizarre, fascinating, and grotesque.
@ADEdsall4 жыл бұрын
Have you seen an assassin snail where the probiscus stays dangling out for hours? Mine is passing the smell test, but not moving (much), siphon is withdrawn, and the probiscus is sticking out and not moving.

Fast forward 5 months the original snails is virtually zero, every now and then I see a couple of them. But instead I have 100s of assassin snails. Yes they breed slower than the other snails but in the end I still have a large snail problem :(

Assassin snails can, and will take down larger snails. Nerites, mysteries, etc. I had three mystery snails, and about 30+ ramshorns. 10 assassins(we though we only had four--I have sand substrate, and they like to burrow) wiped out all the ramshorns, and then ganged up on the three mystery snails. I've never seen assassins going for fish. If your fish dies, and settles, they'll eat it. I lost 15-20 ghost shrimp to assassin snails. You wanna make sure you have feeder snails, or protein feed to keep shrimp with them. They're predator snails, carnivorous. They actively hunt for protein. There's no real way to tell which are male, or female. You'll see one or two on the side of one. They're having sex, or trying to have sex. I've noticed my males are usually smaller, and the female is usually larger. That's not how they are, it's just I always see smaller males going after larger females to procreate. They'll breed between 75-82 degrees, and well fed. If there's not enough protein for more, they'll stop breeding.

When I had a bladder snail problem in my 29-gallon tank my first solution was yoyo loaches. In 4 days that wiped out every visible snail and I thought I was good. The main fish in the tank were female bettas, neons albino corydoras and dwarf frogs. Because I heard that yoys can be aggressive as they get bigger, I moved them to a 55-gallon with large fish (rainbow praecox koi bettas and some huge corys). When the snails came back I purchased a few assassin snails. They have kept the invasion in check, but don't seem to be winning the war yet. I don't need them all dead, but just don't want them to become a distraction to what I'm building as a community and aquascape.

I've held assassins for ages and can confirm a few things: They DO NOT attack fish. They do clean up dead fish real quick like. Which is good because that prevents ammonia spikes if a fish dies in a corner somewhere and goes unnoticed. They DO NOT attack shrimp. I've held cherry shrimp with them for ages and I've seen shrimp sit on top of both the submerged and mobile snails and the snails did not do anything. They DO NOT attack each other. I've spent a week observing after the other snails where verified gone and they all just went around and snacked on whatever else they could find. I've seen many ambush ready submerged snails be walked over by other assassins and there was no attack. What do they eat if there is no prey? Mostly bottom feeder wafers and fish flake. They really make a beeline for that. I don't think they eat algae, but they might eat some dead plant matter as I've seen them munch on dead leaves a bunch of times and they do gather up there if there's no other food available. They also came out for stuff like blanched zucchini or cucumber. For me, the favorite place to lay eggs seems to have been the glass, which was a bit of a pain since I couldn't easily clean those spots if I wanted to keep the eggs. They are definitely awesome and pretty, but as mentioned do not consider them a cleaner like a nerite. They are fully part of the bioload.

But last week I took all of the assassin snails out of the aquarium and put them in a large vase - took me 2 days to accomplish this :D. Within an hour 68 of them were all hanging out along the water line. I gently pushed them back, but an hour later: there they were again. I have no idea why they are doing this. Only one actually left, and dropped over the edge. I put him back, and he seems alright. Does anybody have an idea why they are doing this? Lack of space, lack of shelter, lack of whatever? We like to give them a good life, but are not sure if they are happy now. Thanks for your comments.
