Dude you are so freaking dope. Just bought my first tank about a month ago and knew nothing. Been watching your channel and have learned so much. Its just a little 20 gallon tank which turned out to be far more gorgeous than I thought such a small tank would be. I added bottled bacteria and a couple fish flakes every day for about a week. The tank cycled in about 3 weeks, which I was ecstatic about because everyone was saying it would take like 1-3 months to cycle and that was daunting, because every day that the tank didnt have fish in it. My kids were on my nerves about it. I put in 4 zebra danios, 1 cory cat, and 1 dwarf gourami. Id read that dwarf gourami didnt make good tank mates for active fish like danio, but the lady at the store said it will do just fine. It hasnt been to long, but so far its been just fine. So the problem I had when filling the 20 gallon with fish is that many of the fish that I wanted to put in the tank just werent suited for a small 20 gallon tank. So Im already on to my second tank. Ordered a 75 gallon tank with a Fluval 407 canister filter at the same store, but took my kids to petco that day and they had a 75 gallon tank on the shelf and they had a Fluval FX4. So I picked those up and canceled the order at the local store. I have a question. I understand that the FX4 is rated for a much bigger tank than 75 gallons, but will I be ok to run it with the 75 gallon, or should I return it and get 407? Also can I take the sponge filter from my 20 gallon and use it in the 75 gallon to jump start the good bacteria, or is the bacteria in the 20 gallon not established enough yet?
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Thanks bro, Glad to hear you've been enjoying the channel! The FX4 could be overkill for the 75 but it never hurts to over filtrate. Since you've already got it I suggest you keep it. You never know when you'll need it for your next upgrade anyway 😁 I would leave the 20 gallon in tact for now as its still new and needs to mature. BUT good news is you can set up your 75 and add fish in same day if you follow this method - kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3TYoqyilsaeaac I've done it successfully, many times already, good luck!

I use a dedicated 35gal brute rubber maid container on a wheel tray to do water changes. Pump water into it from the tank ,30g, to get exact measure of my water change.. the reverse by filling the container, treating with prime for the 30g, riff salt, and temperature match. I run the pump inside with a fine prefilter to mix the salt in. Save water, precision conditioner application, and fully fine filtered. Takes a little extra time but so worth it.

I do mine this way too for my 900 gal, people always ask how do I clean my substrate. It's flow within the tank normally keeps it suspended enough for the filtration and the fuge to suck it up. Also get asked how do I do this for salt water, and in the basement I have a few 55 gallon barrels of rodi premix made up the pump goes into. Now you can do this to scale, I happen to need more so I have a few 55 gallon barrels setup, that being said, most only need one and is fine with that. But that's how I do it and stay consistent. You definitely hit the nail on the head with the pump bro, this is a life changer. Also another trick, I have wifi plugs hooked up to Google and alexa so you can pull them out of regular plug sockets and move them, and I just say, hey Google, turn on fish tank pump, and boom, it starts flowing and you don't gotta be running back and forth or need another person. 😉 but you do gotta have wifi for that to work, that being said, if you don't have wifi, you can still buy remote plugs from like harbor freight that will work similar as well, just not voice command.

After watching your video @kaveman aquatics , I got a vivosun pump and just tried it out with my 75 and 60 gallon tanks. It was like a MIRACLE!! It took almost NO time at all and there was a lot less water all over the floors compared with my buckets. That said, I wanted to drain into my sink because the CICADAS have invaded the mid-Atlantic in the US, so I attached the pump to my long python hose and drained into the sink. I also didn't want to use a tub to refill since my water pressure for refilling is totally fine. So I retrofitted my python fill-hook (as well as my siphons for those targeted/substrate cleaning days) using python's quick connectors so that I can now easily swap out the vivosun pump for either the syphon or re-filling hook. Thank you for the inspiration!! The amount of time I got back in my day is priceless!

These are primed and circulated a day ahead of time and buffered to the same ph and heated to the same temperature. And a 150 trough outside where tank water goes and then a transfer pump to water the garden. We use 1300gph pumps and a 300gph transfer to the sprinkler. No wasted water. thanks, this was really helpful! had no idea you had to run your tap during water REMOVAL with the python. dang. my problem was with current day fixtures, the python doesn't work. i'm not unscrewing parts of it just to use one of those. the wear and tear would be excessive. i'm about at the part of run a hose out the door for water changes... but for filling, i just didn't have a really good system. bucket in the kitchen sink. but i don't like that either on account of needing to resanitize stuff after. and it's with bleach cleaner AND that isn't supposed to go down the drain on septic. (so i carefully wipe most of it out. but it's still not great, any part of that getting washed down and killing off the beneficial bacteria.)

@@KaveManAquatics my pleasure the least I can do! You’ve saved me years of back pain and time changing 100 gallon tanks with a bucket! Keep going forward!

I really like this idea and want to try it, the only thing is I have gravel and use the gravel vacuum to get all that waste
@KaveManAquatics Жыл бұрын
You can still do that with the gravel vac 😁

The python hose is great and you can get a 1/2 to 3/4 adapter for the submersible pump and connect the python hose up to it. Just ditch the python siphon water pump or just use that part for filling

Great idea using a clamp for the water hose. I'm going to order now. Thanks.

Another intelligent well explained video which makes this hobby so much fun. My African tank is doing awesome thanks to you. No toxins at all in the water and the fish are thriving. I am definitely a fan! 👍👍

Nice video you’ve helped me heaps. I’ve noticed can drain and refill tanks through fx6 filters. I drain using fx6 filter but have never refilled using it cause I don’t want chlorinated water killing my bacteria. Use buckets instead as I like to give prime atleast 15 minutes before adding to the tank (just my preference) the pump idea is awesome though can pump from a tote a lot easier then pouring in by hand. All your videos are super useful. Keep up the good work

Excellent advice. Can I dechlorinate the water in box in the bathroom before pumping it back into tank?
