Actually you don't have to run water for back pressure at all...simply turn on the water like normal with the valve closed and make sure the entire hose and tube are full of water. Invert tube in tank, get rid of any air bubbles in tube then go to the sink and open the valve. The back pressure will kick in on its own, no need to run water (not practical if you have a long extension it will take forever and waste loads of water).

I adopted a 55gal tank two years ago and it came with one of these and I had no idea how to use it and became super frustrated with it. Now I feel like a fool for not looking into!! I was using it backwards and didn't know it hooked up to the sink. Been muscling water buckets forever now. Ugh. I'm so excited to use it properly. Great video! Tanks a lot!! :)

Thank you so so much! I've been needing to do a water change on my Axolotl's 20gal (soon to be upgraded to 30gal) and I had no idea how to use the python. My parents knew but whenever I asked them to help me do a water change or if they could teach me how to use it they said "later". I've been watching other python how-to videos and I just didn't get it, and now I do! Thats so very much!

I just learned about this magical siphon . Im buying one ASAP. I used to siphon all the water into a giant 45 gallon trash can... then I would put an electric water pump into the trash can ... then drain everything down the drain . this is definitely worth a try, im tired of making water messes.

+John Shea - It's definitely a must-have, we've never looked back! We were pretty amused by the force of the water too-- the hook is best for larger aquariums like the one we worked on. It points straight down, so it may kick up gravel in shallower tanks. That said, it's a great product if you want a "hands-free" refill!

okay, I finally, (after 2 years of hauling buckets of water) bought a Python water changer kit! Wow I am so happy I finally did it! It works great! My one hour water changes now take about 10 minutes! I was a little nervous to add the water back into the tank because I normally put the water conditioner into the bucket and then pour into the aquarium. So I put some of the conditioner in first as well as half way through the fill and then a little more near the end. I have a 120 gallon tank and this is going to save me a lot of time. Thanks Big Al's! Love your store!

I'm wanting to buy one of these,and for years I almost did,but I always wondered about the whole water conditioner issue,how it would be added to the tank,if there was a reservoir on the python to add it, I really had no idea how it worked. As many people that rave about it, I assume that the method they show here,adding conditioner as it fills, that this is safe, but still I worry. I was always told that you had to add water conditioner before you add any fresh water to the aquarium, any time you fill a bucket you had to add conditioner before the bucket of water is added to the aquarium, and this had to be repeated with every bucket of water. If I knew we could do it this way I would have just added the appropriate amount to the aquarium as soon as I drained enough water so I wouldnt have to beat myself up whether I forgot to add conditioner to a bucket of water when it usually takes about 15 buckets of water to fill mine back up. It's so easy to forget one time and I've definitely worried myself sick a few times trying to remember if I forgot one time,so I'd panic and dump several capfuls just in case.

Good videoI picked up this water changing system a couple weeks ago...the cost was my only hesitation but after one use I was hooked. Like the tip on the extended gravel vacuum and will be looking to pick one up for my 90G Tank. My LFS did not have the water fill attachment and may have to look into that too but not in a rush. Now I use my bucket to store the Python...

In order to drain the tank, you need to leave the tap water running?
@avani1274
@avani1274 7 жыл бұрын
No you don't! I turn it on once quickly to get the suction, then turn it off. It will drain faster if you keep your tap running though, so if you need suction to do heavy-duty substrate cleaning I'd recommend it. With sand you probably wouldn't need a strong suction, but I use river rocks as my main substrate in my tank so I don't need to keep my tap running.

Avani is correct as long as the sink is below the water level of the tank (basically it just becomes a massive siphon). If the sink is above the tank water level, the water will just drain back to the tank

I can’t possibly imagine running the water like that. I live in So. Cal where water is scarce...so wasting even a little is a no no!
@wynja77

Seems like a great idea APART from that you have to have water running the whole time while emptying the tank, that's a LOT of wasted water... I've done a similar thing where I've connected a siphon which had a pump to a hose, and that hose I can just connect to the water faucet to refill the tank again. It's not pretty but it works.

You do not have to leave the water running when siphoning unless the sink is too high. You only need to do it until the water starts suctioning. I always fill using my kitchen sink, but it's too high to continue the pressure for suctioning, so I just drain into the toilet. My python is a set of 2 50 footers attached together, so it makes it super easy. edit: Also be very careful when filling. You cannot just casually turn on the sink to fill it with the valve closed at the siphon end. The pressure will straight up force the python off the sink or break your piping. (personal experience, I've had to replace the attachments more than once).

A M I've never had an issue with clogging. I have the Ecoplus submersible pump from Amazon & hook up the Python to it first to drain the tank to whatever level I need for that water change. Once drained I remove the pump & use the Python as intended to vacuum the sand & fill the tank back up. Hope that helps.

Using a barrel or Brute container, you would then need to attach the python to a pump to allow you to fill from this container to the aquarium. You need to ensure that the water is treated and mixed before adding to your aquarium, obviously.

I've hauled 5g Homer buckets around for years changing water. This video almost has me convinced to switch, especially because I'm doing EI-method dry ferts on my 60g, and that specifies a weekly 50% water change. My only reservation continues to be about water treatment- I can add Seachem Prime to the bucket I just filled and be positive I've reacted/outgassed all the Cl- and choloramines. The Python method is less precise.

@Big Al's, so when I drain the water from the tank to the sink, do I have to keep the sink on while I'm sucking up the water to the sink?

What about needing to condition the water that you’re putting back into the tank? I’ve heard you need to mix it first then pour? I’m still learning I’ve had many fish die in the process it’s breaking my heart I’m trying to learn as much as possible to have them safely! 😭

Does the faucet have to run the entire time you are draining or just long enough to establish the siphon?
@jayl5505
@jayl5505 6 жыл бұрын
If your faucet is located below the water line, then you can start the siphon and then turn off your water and gravity will do the rest.
