One mistake I've made withe the Master API Test kit is neglecting to rinse the test tube and cap thoroughly enough between tests. The pH tests seem particularly sensitive to the other chemicals in the same kit, so if you don't rinse thoroughly before using it you'll get bizarre results. The cap has a kind of groove in it so I now always make sure to rinse that recess out thoroughly.

I live in FL, so my GH is over 300...literally off-the-charts hard. However, my KH often drops low, even going to 0, if I don't have Wonder Shells and/or coral in the tank. Any idea why that may be happening? In my 55-gallon, I do a Large Wonder Shell and have an entire layer of crushed coral in the substrate. It keeps the KH between 40-80. But I'm just wondering what causes the KH to bottom out when the GH is so high.

I’m guessing it has something to do with limestone? Bc as a native Floridian I remember that lot of Florida is limestone. I had a similar question, actually here in California! My Tap water PH is high, with low GH and KH. I added oyster shells, and it only increased a bit. Then I added wonder shells. My GH was 14 ( from 5) but my KH actually dropped from 3/4 to 2! How do I raise the KH without a huge effect on GH and PH. Is it even possible? Might have to just use filtered watered and add minerals back in myself 🤷♀️although that’s basically what I’m doing now!
@ScooterFXRS4 жыл бұрын
You might want to add a dolomite rock in to your aquarium or just add dolomite powder a bit at a time until you reach your target goal. Much like limestone it to is a sedimentary carbonate rock with usually considerably more Mg in it.

If your kh is very high, *NOTHING* will truly permanently change your pH until you find a way to safely lower it without extreme pH swings... My entire gallon of oak leaf extract is still deep pink on the Tetra strips... Considering that I'm in Flagler Estates, Florida and using well water, it wouldn't be that shocking if it actually didn't change my ph at all. We have extremely high ph and kh water here. I can't tell from the Tetra strips if the pH is extremely high or moderately high. I probably need to find the high range pH liquid test.

I noticed that one of my plants started to melt away so I looked into test kits and found that everything was fine except my GH and KH. I live in Texas and my water is super hard over here. It’s a 5 gallon tank with live plants, a betta and snails, the water evaporates fast and I top it off with conditioned water.,. Which is just adding more minerals. If I stop doing water changes... that’s supposed to help? But what if I need to top it off 😅
@troumer4 жыл бұрын
Generally good advice from Riley, but I'd be cautious about a 25% change, esp. if you've never done something like this. Bettas are pretty hardy, but they're not un-shockable. When I do this, I mix RO/distilled water with tap water (about 2:1). If I'm doing more than a 15% water change, I add half of the new water, wait about 90 min and then add the rest. Also, you can get RO filtered water at many grocery stores much cheaper than distilled water. Most natural grocery stores and even some HEB's charge 50 cents/gallon if you bring in an empty water jug.

I need some advice. Just started to use seachem prime, stability, matrix and pristine in my 10L tank for betta fish. pH has always been around 6.5-7. However, noticed that pH is 5.6 today, do not understand what could have caused this. 50% water change done every 5days but filter sponge not changed. I opened up my filter and it has a very strong chemical smell of matrix and filter sponge is dirty.However, I understand from the seachem website that these products do not alter pH. Appreciate some pointers.

Irene HELP! I have a couple questions. I have been looking for someone that understands the HIGH pH and LOW gh conundrum! All the symptoms you describe in this video is what I have been trying to work through now for over a year with little to no luck. I have been keeping and breeding fish for a very long time and have never run into a city water system like this. Normally I just kept fish that went well with whatever water I had at the time. But this little farming town I live in now actually has a metropolitan RO system. So I am sure this is the reason I have such LOW gh but have never seen a high pH that wasn't associated with a high gh... so this has me puzzled. My pH out of the tap is a consistent 8.2 with a gh of < 2 degrees! After watching this video I know I at least need to test the levels of calcium and magnesium... Questions: 1. Are there any other minerals I need to test for? 2. Since you have gone through the same situation can you tell me if there a resource for how to fix or at least troubleshoot this water situation?

I have a tip for you, Irene (and anyone else who can find this useful). If you feel like it is a hassle to repeatedly cap the small test tube to test KH and GH, you can use the measuring glass sold at Aquarium coop (or the ones you get with medicines [just make sure it's clean]), fill it up with 5 mL tank water, and spin around the glass each time you add a drop. I find that much easier than adding the one drop, capping the tube, inverting, and repeating the process.

pure water at 7.0?? umm.. really bad phrasing their, my rain water=6.4ish. RO water around 6 and demineralized water around 5.8. Pure water by definition is slightly acidic and distilled water will test out around pH 5.8. i dunno that "pure water" statement kinda triggered me when your trying to be educational you need to get your facts, and the way you phrase them, correct because the people who want to learn will pick up the little phrases, and give them the wrong idea about everything your trying to educate
@spiraleena92374 жыл бұрын
A quick google search and you will find literally hundreds of websites that say “ pure water is neutral at a ph of 7.0”. RO water is 7 straight out the filter, but since it has exactly no buffer ( KH) whatsoever it grabs CO and starts to acidity unless you add something to it. Rain water is acidic bc it mixes with gases, like sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide in the sky. ( again no buffers remember). Pure water is ready to absorb something bc it’s basically empty and doesn’t often resist naturally. Whether it’s minerals/KH/GH from rocks from the earth or acids from the air, there is always something else in there. Yet again and again aquarist, and scientist alike, refer to pure water having a neutral 7.0. And that’s fine for something like this, I’d say.
@GirlTalksFish4 жыл бұрын
@@spiraleena9237 Thanks for explaining it for me! That's exactly what I would've said. 🤗
@raveG2444 жыл бұрын
@@spiraleena9237 You are right. Irene meant pH neutral water, which is between 6.6 and 7.3. And, pure water can under no "definition" be slightly acidic because then it wouldn't be pure water anymore. Anyway, and not related to the question, can you explain why Irene's pH tests fairly high with such low KH? There is so little buffering capacity that I would expect acidification (and swings). Is it natural alkalinity that drives the pH up?

Long story short. Got a 10 gal tank from petsmart. All fish died. Went to local pet store was told ph was too high i had to get it down. used ph down and got it to 7 then it would go back up the next day to 8. Lady said you need to replace your gravel with what i sell here petsmart raises your PH. Did that and lowered PH again next day it was back to 8. Lady says did you get and decorations remove those. Did that and next day PH was back to 8. Lady says ok your going to need to stop using your tap water. I go and get distilled water and raise its ph to 7. Next day it goes up to 8. I am new and started with all female guppies. I did a 50% water change one day and my ph swung to 6.6 and my GH and KH are high keeping it stable. My fish have been swimming weird and sometimes gasp for air. I regret the large water change and will fo 25% for now on but my Ph can't correct itself. I'm scared for my fish and feel if I can't resolve it soon then I'll have to take my fish back before they may die or something🥺

That was really helpful! I'm gonna be testing and getting my water right for the fishes and plants 😀
