Great video! Mixing the test solution is so important as it can change results. Mix all the test solutions well, especially the ammonia and Nitrate test solutions before testing. Also, be sure to clean the test tubes well after each use as a dirty tube can affect test results.

The nitrate MUST be read in natural day light, not under a lamp or any other artificial lighting. I stand right in front of my screen door every time and can see the correct color very easy. Before doing this I was doing a lot of unnecessary water changes thinking the liquid was red under a lamp when it was really orange. The tube will often look red just looking at it but when in natural day light the correct color will come through, which is more often than not a darker orange.

People also go wrong by holding it against the white card. That will show a higher level. As you say, light needs to pass through the tube for an accurate reading. 👍

The color of the solution changes dependant on whether or not you hold directly against a white sheet of paper. How demonstrated in this video is exactly how results should be read. I would only caution people to read the instructions and ensure you are giving your tests enough time to develop. Ammonia, nitrite and nitrates all require five minutes. They even specify different mixing techniques. If you're going to go through all the trouble of testing your tank you might as well try to get the most accurate results possible. This was a great video, thank you sir :-)

Hey Kevin, riddle me this...Why would I get 3 very different test results from 3 different test kits on 5 separate aquariums (confirmed MTS), tested with each kit/strips ? To be clear on what I did was test each of my 5 tanks with 3 different test kits each. I tested each tank on the same day and time ( give or a take 30 minutes). I used a Fluval Master Kit, a Top Fin Master kit and Quick Strips. The results were drastically different from each test on the same aquarium for each testing method. For example; off the top of my head, testing a 20 gal. guppy tank with Fluvals Master Kit, test result were a very high PH, Ammonia levels not present, and 0 nitrates, and when tested the same tank with Top Fin Mater kit , PH in the neutral range, Ammonia leves elevated, and nitrates through the roof. And very different results again with Quick Strips. Therse are just examples and not actual results but simular in the range of results. The reason I did all that was because while testing 1 aquarium the results seemed way off from my norm, so I retested usiing a different kit, then another. I then had to do this to all the tanks to ensure I was hallucinating. It makes me wonder, are these kits worth it? Am I being ripped off? I test each tank every week, or if I think there is a problem. How do I know if I am getting accurate readings?
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Thats a great question. Possible that any deviation on how you take the test can change the results...try the API master test kit. It's said to be the best and most accurate but it also has its false readings as well. But its the lesser evil, if you know what i mean...
@elisaehm91032 жыл бұрын

Video is super helpful, tested my water and everything seems be good except I think my ph is a little high regarding regular. It’s a darker blue then the examples shown

Is it possible to use half this amount of water and half the number of drops in order to get more tests?
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, but I would use the test kit the way it was intended for accurate results

Has anyone else noticed it takes longer than 5 minutes for the color to develop on the master test kit? I started cycling my aquarium about 4 days ago by dumping in a bunch of fish food (for bottom feeders) to start the ammonia production. Tested today, got 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 0 nitrate. Did I do something wrong?

Hi Kaveman, looks like my tank cycled but need to change water for the nitrate. Do I need to carry on adding prime & stability everyday to maintain 0? Please advise. Honestly you have saved me a lot about aquarium maintenance. Thank you so much, much love from UK

If you're ammonia is already at 0 then no. Your tank has cycled. You can water change now and use only Prime to dechlorinate. Here's when you should use Stability again - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpfbpGuDedGKjJo
