I have 3 of them (two 10g and a 30g). I like the fact they don't need priming when you turn them back on, they're super quiet, and so far mine do a great job. I get rid of the media they come with, including the blue grate, and put sponges and ceramic rings in mine. My water is crystal clear other than the tannins I add. I buffer the flow on the one I have for my betta and his water is nice and still. The Fluval prefilter sponge fits nicely on the intake as well and looks good too.

I don’t buy filter pads anymore. I just use a sponge in the intake as well as the inside. After a cleaning I use pillow fiber stuffing for a bit to clear up quickly. Remove it and have no problems. I don’t do water changes because I have house plants. Just top off. When I do have to clean my sponges I just squeeze the sponge into my plants. My peppers are hot now. Fun stuff. I run ceramic media in bags stuffed down in, and in one I managed to get the "bio grid" to work with mini bio balls. They do restart smooth upon maintenance or a power outage, and are still whisper quiet after 2 years of daily use. I highly recommend them, and like them almost as much as my emperor 400's. I’ve got one running on a planted guppy fry tank with a couple sponge filters, and after replacing the filter pad with my own media, I think they are excellent. Put an intake sponge on it, cram some filter floss or similar media onto the little blue barrier, and let it go. Starts up no problem. Doesn’t need to be primed. Still quiet after a few months, and does the job that my sponge filters can’t.

This filter came with our 29 gallon tank. Additionally I added a Aqueon QuietFlow 10 on the opposite end of the tank and they are working flawlessly and have been for months now. Very pleased with them for the price. Also the 29 gallon does have a large sponge filter as well and the air pump for the sponge filter is louder than both of the aqueon filters put together lol. I put a pre filter intake sponge on both of the aqueon filters. Excellent review as always

I bought 15 of these on clearance for $8.00 each a few years ago. I just bought them because they were cheap. They don't hold enough media for any serious application. But...I do use them when I occasionally need to run chemical filtration on a tank temporarily. I just throw a media bag full of carbon or Purigen or whatever I need to use on a case by case basis. They will actually sit on most any small to medium tank up to and including a 125. On the larger tanks they just sit up a little higher but they work fine. Great to have as an emergency back up or in addition to a sponge filter for mechanical filtration. For mechanical filtration I use a cut down AQ sponge. As for restarting...sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. LOL!! Thanks for the review.

They work, they are self priming. Overall a good filter. the only issue I have with the Aqueon is the pump dumps the water on top of the well of the filter, inside the box. The more expensive filters in the HOB realm always pump the water to the bottom of the well of the filter forcing the water up through the media vice the Aqueon flows right over it.
@PrimeTimeAquatics6 жыл бұрын
I agree - the more water flow through the media, the better the filtration will be!

You can use the marineland 350 and put it on the right or left side of the tank which makes a slow current in the water column, in which i think would be great in a 20 long stocked with baby bristlenose plecs, but on the other hand you cant put a lid or you have to modify the lid in order to make it work
@dwayneparsons5434 жыл бұрын
Hey Jason. I bought this filter except it was supposedly the new and improve version with the LED light top. I was in a hurry for a filter and couldn't wait for a Tidal to show up and it was on sale at the local Petco. The only thing that I like is that the pump in in the tank and self primed instantly and I like that it is narrow as it is on a desk. Now the negatives for the new and improve version. The flow tube doesn't expand like on the old one and is somewhat short in a 20 gal. quarantine tank. Would probably work much better on a 20 gal. long. I don't think it has enough flow for a larger tank. There is NO flow control so what you get out of the box for flow is what you get. It is also the noisiest of my filters. Even a cheap TopFin that I have on a 10gal is much quieter and it doesn't compare to to my Tidal 55's for noise. I have hot rod the filter media and put a pre-filter on the intake nozzle. We will see how well it does with time. Happy New Year to you and yours!

@@PrimeTimeAquatics now that I've had a chance to watch the video (no Wi-Fi access at work), first thing I noticed was that is the old filter design. They had some design updates several years ago that changed the intake tube, lid, and the blue thing (technical term 😉) at the output. I had a Quietflow 30 on my 20 gallon high tank for almost 2 years plus a sponge filter (I follow the 10x tank size guideline on GPH). My favourite feature was that they start without needing to be primed and are thin. I tweaked mine and used my own filter media, plus added Seachem Matrix and Fluval/Hagen bio-max in it. It served me well until my panda cories decided to breed at a rate that made my endlers jealous. They work well when you use your own media, whether it's floss or course sponges stuffed in the cartridge area.

I need a little bigger HOB filter, but only for a while (like two months). I need a smaller filter, because my 125 Gallon tank will be about 1/5 full during a long planting stage. After that, my tank will go a little higher for medium size plants. About 5 months after setup, it will go full size. I can always use the HOB on a tank for the filter size. There are many options to go with. I can use the regular canister, but with a minimal flow. Decisions, Decisions?

I've had one running for a few months and it doesn't matter if it's dirty or not, the thing stays silent. Quick Tip: Don't use the carbon pads, remove those and full the HOB with small pieces (quarter sized) of lava rock. Also add a pre-filter. I have crystal clear water. If they won't hang on a bigger tank they would be useless to me because I usually use those smaller filters without any media and use them to run pothos in the tank. I again make the same criticism of this filter as I make of all(?) other modern HOB filters. 1) a grossly inadequately sized media box that denies aquarists the benefit of a large biologically active media bed. 2) Con job, expensive, filter cartridges that compound the issue above - they do not provide enough media area in an already small media holder box. And the alleged chemical filtering of such a little bit of carbon does nothing. 3) This filter continues the issue of releasing the filtered water in the same immediate area as the filter intake instead of providing a directional output that would set up a broad circulation pattern in the tank. These HOBs, in spite of their quiet, easily serviced motors, actually lag behind filter designs seen in the 50s up through the advent of these modern designs. If I could ONLY use a modern HOB, I would use it with polyester fiber and a Poly Filter cut up into as many pieces as I could get to fit. I'd have to concentrate on mechanical and chemical filtration and frequent partial water changes due to lack of space for an adequate biological colony. Plastic is cheap. They could give us a media box three or four times the size for a couple of bucks more. And an adjustable return sprout for $2 more.

Between the aqueon, marineland and those filter set ups from Walmart I'd stay away from all three. Super cheap unreliable and breaks way to easily, not to mention the lack of surface media like mentioned. I miss the old whisper h.o.b. filters and aquaclear before fluval took them over. Why mess with a good thing? Just like any other aquatic related item you get what you pay for, I'd rather spend the money the first time instead of nickel and diming me to death over a short period from cheap equipment. I bought my wife one of those aqueon column tanks couple years back, just knowing from past failures these filters are complete junk I went ahead and bought her an aquaclear along with that new tank, and of course we set up that aqueon on another tank for giggles. It lasted on a very low stocked 20 tall for almost three months before the impeller went out like I figured it would. We'll see how long this one lasts.
