I'm an ex-combat MP, gulf war veteran/Iraq/ Kuwait. I cleared buildings, breeched doorways, shot from vehicles, short/ long distances, all with a 20" barrel M16A2. I own the 3 length barrels, 16,18, & 20". Each has a purpose, CQB, all around, & SHTF. My 20" rifle length DPMS 5.56 is my favorite. It's stupid accurate, extremely reliable, & good for short or long range. I use cheap 55/62gr FMJ & 62gr hpbt and the 20" works great with all of them.

+fsteddie95 I agree. As much as I like my Colt 6920's, I bought a Colt AR15 A4 a couple years back and love it so damn much a just got another one last month ! I say we enjoy all the barrel lengths although I don't have an eighteen incher. I like to just copy what the military does. Acogs, M4s and M16s,,,
@jakeweston86168 жыл бұрын
The Navy Mk 12 is obviously a great rifle. My substitute for the DMR is a Colt AR15A4 with an ACOG TA31. Not a true DMR but the next best thing. A buddy of mine has a Danny Defense DMR like yours and loves it. If you are thinking about a floating barrel I would suggest a Colt M4 6940. I love mine and paid $1300. It will have a factory free floated barrel with a standard 1/7 6920 barrel. As you may know, the minute you pay more than the $1k mark you are buying things like free floated barrels, hammer forged barrels and factory installed match triggers. All of which are great for that extra degree of performance but not at all necessary. If you want a standard GI rifle for run'n gun and personal defense then there is no reason to pay more than $1k mark. Don't bother with the FN15. My nephew has one and although its a great rifle it doesn't cover all of the very basic milspec's that a regular 6920 does. It does not have an H marked buffer or staked castle nut (!?!) The fit and finish is great and at least they come with a carry handle, unlike Colt. But after seeing his, I was very glad that I didn't bother getting one. FYI the FN15 'tactical' or FN15 'DMR' may be an option for you.

Exactly. It's a small caliber and depends on velocity. Short barrels look cool, but the reality is longer barrels are more effective and produce less flash.

Twist rate is a personal choice and is somewhat determined by the manufacturer as is barrel length it really depends on what your doing with your rifle and what rifle you buy.Some take it to the extreme some times with truck guns but again it's their choice. Personally I like the 1:8 it stabilizes what I shoot and I have 16 and 18 inch barrels and it works for me.

Theoretical Question... 62 gr designed to move at 3100 f/s through a 1 in 8 barrel... Now if you run that same 62 gr through a 7.5 inch barrel at 2200 f/s... does it lose stability??? Should not the twist rate change ?
@GeorgiaBoy19613 жыл бұрын
@ tsafa: Reloaders/hand-loaders have long-known that if the twist rate is marginal, one can sometimes compensate for it with higher MV, and still get a well-stabilized bullet which does not keyhole on target. To answer your question, in theory yes the barrel length - and thereby attained MV - should have an impact on stability of your 62-grain projectile. The easier way would be to test it empirically, i.e., by going to the range and firing test groups with each at a variety of distances and studying closely the targets for signs of keyholing and degraded accuracy/stability. My hunch is that both examples will adequately stabilize the 62-grain bullet, but that the maximum stabilized range of the shorter barrel is going to substantially less. In other words, it will take less time and therefore less yardage for its flight path to decay. That stands to reason since it ought to go transsonic and then subsonic sooner, thereby becoming dynamically-unstable sooner. Your 62-grain bullet is tail-heavy naturally when at rest; what keeps it stable and in the proper nose-first orientation is the very high rate of spin imparted by the rifling. Once that decays, the projectile will begin becoming unstable and eventually its spin rate will decay such that it will exhibit greater yaw and finally "swap ends" as its spin fails to keep it nose-forward. A bullet not fully-stabilized as it leaves the barrel characteristically shows poor accuracy and "keyholing" of the target, for these reasons.

So, realistically, a 7.5”-16” barrel combined with a standard 55 grain bullet will have effective terminal ballistics at 0-150 yards. When combined with the m855 rounds, it will penetrate, but won’t fragment effectively. Gotcha 👍🏼

Well actually the 20 inch rifle was standard length seeing how it was a 5.56 and the other rifles you have mentioned here where either 30-06 or 7.62. basically spent the whole video explaining why the 20 inc barrel is superior in every aspect BUT in confined spaces such as a house, only to come to to conclusion that you would never build a 20inch upper. o.0 20 inch uppers have their place and are better in just about every scenario past 100 yards. if you use your rifle for just target shooting and or hunting - 20 inch. if you use it primarily as a ranch rifle - 20inch if you use it primarily as a home defense rifle - 16 inch there is no reason to limit your ballistic capability unless your surroundings absolutely require that you do. the only reason most people steer away from the 20's now a days is because its not general considered as "cool" The AR15 market is flooded wit trend following zombies. A 20 inc rifle with a collapsible stock is only an inch or two longer than someone holding a fully extended handgun.
@krixig9 жыл бұрын
If you look at the muzzle velocity charts of an 18" vs 20" barrels, that's where the "law of diminishing returns" really takes effect and they become kind of arbitrary. He said he'd opt for an 18" for a dmr style rifle due to this. If you think 20" is great, then by all means dive on it. I think even a 24" would be cool, but it's ultimately cosmetic in the end and that much more of a pain to store and move with. Really you only want a barrel that's just barely long enough to accomplish what you want it to though, in the end.
@krixig9 жыл бұрын
Btw, we have 20" rifles in our towers at work and 16"s for our mobile positions, however we have the option to use the 20's during training. Another thing you may not know is that the flash hider on most NATO rifles was exactly 22 millimeters in diameter for the purpose of firing rifle grenades. Perhaps all of the other commercial "flash" hidders are just for looks. Of course today we use the 40mm attachments or M79s. The other thing you may not know is that short barrels sound like the enemys' rifles (FAL or AKMs) and, particularly at night, this may draw friendly fire.

so the m855 only tumbles and fragment in a 20in barrel?
@GeorgiaBoy19613 жыл бұрын
The official data state that a MV of 2500 fps or above is preferred for optimal fragmentation,i.e., yaw giving way to tumbling (swapping ends) in the terminal ballistics phase. Part of the trade-off of M855 was that in order to get better penetration against sheet metal (an enemy helmet, it was hypothesized) at the specified range, a steel cup or "penetrator" was inserted into the lead matrix of the bullet. This does not make it AP or armoring piercing ammunition; technically, it is enhanced penetration ball/fmj ammo. The penetrator tends to diminish the reliability of the yawing effect so pronounced in the 55-grain M193 round. Sometimes, M855 62-grain green-tip yaws and fragments just fine, without issue. Other times, if begins doing so only after passing through a certain thickness of tissue first (which is why the round is thought to be less-effective against slender or skinny people), and sometimes it just ice-picks and doesn't yaw-fragment at all. Like most conventional rifle bullets, the M855 62-grain projectile is naturally tail-heavy. It's center of gravity lies aft of its center-line. When it is fired, the tremendous spin and muzzle velocity imparted cause it to remain in the proper nose-first attitude and spin-stabilized along its long axis. Because of imperfections in construction, all M855 bullets yaw about their central axis to a degree. The question becomes is the yaw enough to cause the bullet to tumble (swap-ends) when it hits a target such as an enemy soldier? The unpredictability of the degree of yaw, plus the dependence upon the projectile designs - M193 and M855 both - upon high MV for their effects on target - account for much of the inconsistency in combat performance of the 5.56x45 cartridge. Some troops reporting devastating first-shot stops, others reporting enemy tangos absorbing multiple center-mass hits yet remaining in the fight. Modern innovations such as the widespread use of bonded solids and OTM (open-tip match) bullet designs have led to greater reliability and terminal effectiveness for the cartridge out of carbines, SBRs and when suppressed, as well as more-reliable performance against barriers such as automotive glass and sheet metal.

What buffer do you recommend on a 18" and 20" barrel?
@Gunker027 жыл бұрын
JSCamouflage carbine and H buffer worked for me on both barrel lengths.

So AR20” 1:7 twist is it good?

Firearms are only as good as the owner at accuracy

Went 20" on my 6.5G for extended range hunting But do agree short barrels have their purpose Also have 16" 5.56 & 10.5" x39

What about other caliber's ???? My 6.8 has a 20" barrel and that's my barrel length. Do other cartridges too .

I want a retro AR15. I want my first AR15 to look like an m16. Fixed stock. Carrying handle. 20 Round Mags. Iron sights. Almost like the one that my father used in Vietnam.

I think the barrel length is subject to the environment in which you live. If you live in an urban environment then a 16" barrel is what you need, but if you live in a wilderness habitat then perhaps a 20" barrel would be more practical.

AlphaHotel0311 He sure does, and I like to get the best information out to my viewers, not talk about stuff I am not fully versed in like some KZbin channels do. I do not know everything and have no problem saying so when that is. I have a good understanding of this subject but Murr really has put the time in, studied it, lived it, and taught it, etc. ;)

does having a free floating handguard make that much of a difference in accuracy?
@CaptainBerz10 жыл бұрын
sniperbait1 The majority of the accuracy of a gun lies in the operator of it.

Gentlemen, I'd watch the whole video if my internet was not sooo slow right now, I keep getting the spinning circle while it tries to play your video, ugggh! I have a question and if you covered it in the video, I apologize for asking, but I would like to know once and for all if barrel twist rate has any impact at all on velocity/fps? Hopefully I can catch the test of this video later, as well as Part II. Thanks, AGW.

It is the same as on my Armalite M15TAC18. I called tech support to find out. It is the highly rated OSS Bannar Alpha I. It is 1/2 flash suppressor and 1/2 compensator. It swirls the gases around rather have having them eject straight out the sides. (Person shooting beside ya will be loving you!) Since came on rifle, sorry, don't know price. Hope this helps. I get more compliments on how mine looks. Seems my gun is quieter and felt recoil is so minimal.

My goto is an 18 inch 1:8 twist in .556 my reasoning is I like the full length gas system and .556 was designed for a 20 inch barrel as we all know so anything lower you're losing that velocity at range. With that being said I've owned a 10.5 inch .556 and a 12 inch .556 AR when I go target shooting the 10.5 hits out about 200 torso sized groups the 12 about out to 250. Now when hog hunting anything above 100.yards they have problems taking them down that's because even though on the range they might look like they can hit out hard at 200 yards plus but in reality .556 needs a vertain velocityto work.
@jakehansen34185 жыл бұрын
If not you're basicly hitting with a beefy .22 lr if you want a short barrel ar go with 300 black out or 6.5 creadmor or whatever is out there at the moment I mean we are no longer bound by .556 lol.
