The Russians long ago made the APS. And I think it's the SPP-1 even further back. both are designed exclusively for underwater.

ADS is more interesting. it’s fully amphibious rifle which using special ammo 5.45x39 PSP which is dimensionally almost identical to regular 5.45 so it fits into standard mags.

Ive heard from an industry engineer that drilling out the hole on the rear of the buffer tube will permit the bolt carrier to cycle, otherwise you just have a super stiff hydraulic buffer.

The small hole is for air which is compressible and flows easily through it while also preventing dirt from getting in. Water is considered a non compressible substance, so it needs as large a hole as possible or a perforated buffer tube in order to expell the water as the buffer moves to the rear.

There’s a company in Florida that makes kits for Glocks(and possibly others by now) that allow for reliable underwater use. People use them to kill lion fish en mass because they’re destroying the environment. It’s pretty badass.

Warren I’d guess it’s probably not much more than a couple meters before it looses ballistics. Still better than spearfishing though. When you come up to a large group of lion fish you’d have to spend most of your time reloading your spear gun.

@@andrewneal9976 Lion fish are extremely invasive and dangerous to other wildlife. Honestly, even if they did use plain old lead bullets, the tradeoff isn't even something to actually consider. Considering that there is far more harmful, destructive trash in the ocean in greater quantities that cause more damage than a couple grams of lead, yeah, I'd say the lead isn't so bad. In the amounts it could be used it, the damage of lead in the ocean might even be negligible. Especially since the lion fish directly kill more stuff anyways. The solution will have very minimal short term and long term effects, compared to letting g the situation get worse. That, and some people still do more traditional spear fishing. As cool as the conversion is, it's still got things holding it back. Now if we wanna talk about really bad stuff that has happened to the ocean, we got a whole list of things. From dumping pesticides, mustard gas, oil spills, and all kinds of regular garbage that ends up in the ocean, we got lots to tall about.

Also, steel cased ammo tends to have harder primers. It was a brass case that actually fired, but you could see the grey steel getting manually ejected before it went off.

that would be my guess more than a headspace issue, as the first round failed, domestic ammo with their soft primers may be a solution, wonder if you could skip that and just tube in some air into the receiver to displace most of the water?

@@wdixon27 My guess is the headspace is fine, but the dramatic overpressure of that first round damaged the tip of the pin or flowed some primer material into the bolt and hung it up. That trunnion's a pretty decent chunk of steel as is the bolt, I doubt they would have stretched that much.

Having been on a scuba team I was fairly sure of the outcome of this one lol. It was still fun to watch. Must have sucked hard absorbing the over pressure under water like that. Some pistols actually work much better under water but your still in a situation where any bullet that launches loses velocity so fast that within a short distance it’s useless.

After firing round after round this is what's eventually gonna happen. I remember watching a video on KZbin where a bunch of idiots were doing an underwater "torture test" on pistols. The 1911 they had turned out to be pretty reliable when submerged and they kept firing it untill the barrel just cracked and bulged from all that overpressure basically rendering the pistol unoperatable. They were really suprised.

Probably just above the usual muzzle velocity(V-0). Acceleration ends after the bullet has left the barrel, only other thing that comes to mind is the lack of air in the barrel itself when firing. So yeah, above the usual V-0, but by how much I have no idea.

Are they amplified? I know water doesn't compress like air does, but that means sound doesn't dissipate as readily in water as it does in air, not that the sound is amplified. The *effects* can be amplified, but that's not the same thing.

I’ve been shooting guns underwater for decades. The best ones are Riffes, Rob Allens, Omers, Picassos, Pathos & Hammerheads. If you’re not familiar with them, you’re missing out. Had been on dive status for 20yrs in the US military. On rare occasions we dove our actual weapons. Never considered firing them underwater.

New definition of 'mag dump' Pretty sure the bigger issue is that a barrel and gas system full of water places a bit too much pressure against the chamber and cartridge altogether, rather than headspace. You would need some way to vent water as the round goes off.

I noticed you used steel cased ammo which requires a harder primer strike. Did you notice any differences in the strike depth of the (submerged) fired primers compared to open-air firing? Could the water have obstructed the firing pin enough to result in soft strikes, causing failure to fire?

Kalashnikov did make a couple firearms that are much more effective under water, but at the end of the day the best weapons for underwater combat would be a knife, crossbow, or a simple spear gun

Back in the 60s when the M-16 first came out when they came out of water it was blowing up in soldiers faces that’s why they added the forward assist so they could let the water out and then silently push the bolt back forward.

I know there are guns that have been developed for use underwater use but at the same time it would probably be really difficult if not impossible to get your hands on one even if you're a licensed dealer.
