Habibati! It's round 2 of my Alice in Chains journey, and this time I get blown away by 'Nutshell'. I actually know this song quite well but weirdly enough not from AIC themselves, but just from hearing other bands and musicians play it. Needless to say hearing it straight from the band that wrote is a completely different experience.
If you want to know what my top 3 favorite things about the song are, you can find that video right here.

There's a little nod/smile that Jerry does to the rest of the band during this song and every time it makes me cry, its just a little nod to say 'he can do this, its gonna be fine' This unplugged is one of my all time favourite shows, even if it leaves me emotionally drained. When someone asks me what performance I wish I could go back qnd see, i always pick this one.

There are only a few bands/performances that can really get to me. This is one of them, hell this whole show is one of them. Another is Wake Up by Mad Season, also with Layne on vocals. I'm not sure I could quantify what I would give to go back and see these performances live and in person, maybe everything.

It's just a testament to his talent, skill, and effort Layne put into his craft that even while high he can still deliver a performance that is remembered 30 years later. Jerry was clearly worried about Layne's ability to deliver in this performance and the fact that Layne pulled through is part of the mythos.

Six years after this performance he was found at 86 pounds. It shows how fragile human beings can be. As strong as his lyrics and voice were, one drug took all of that away. It’s hard to explain what people in that mindset mean to people and without them how we’re lost and confused. The typical human being can’t handle that pressure let alone take it serious, but we all leave a mark on this world.

I lost all 3 of my children.(one of my sons to an OD (fentanyl) my other son and stepdaughter both to suicides - All in 5 years and I dealt with having cancer twice . I didn’t want to go on living. I couldn’t sleep so I listened to music. Music was always on at our house. I had outdoor speakers and I did (what I called The Music Exchange with my kids. Everyone of us would pick a CD and put the stereo on random. That was the greatest thing! They learned to love my old music and I learned to appreciate grunge, punk, hip hop and even rap music. I became obsessed with Alice In Chains, Chris Cornell, RHCP, STP, Pearl Jam, MLB and so on. I wanted to die. I was so freaking sad every minute of every day and I couldn’t sleep at night so I listened to music. I’m especially partial to AIC. I have lost so much to drugs, so many people. I am so grateful that I was open minded enough to listen to new music.

@@peggyjyoung6434 You have my condolences for your losses, for what it's worth. And I know the feeling, dealing with the chronic Anemia with my cancer, which can't be solved surgically, makes more days than I would really like difficult to get out of bed. It's not easy when all I have to deal with own problems but adding everything else would be mind numbing. But sometimes, just SOMETIMES, you can find something, ANYTHING to latch onto to keep dragging yourself out of the Tar to just DO SOMETHING & then do something else & listening to music that "speaks" to your soul can do that. Doing nothing more than following one "Footstep" after another until you might not be able to feel the sunlight for the clouds but you can almost see the light through the murk. I'm glad you have been able to keep chugging forward, even when everything is trying to tear you back down. You hit the nail on the head! I grew up in the same generation and grunge is still my life and 99.9% of what I listen to. It’s rare I listen to anything else. I’ll never forget being in my early to mid teens in a Christian household and during our summer vacation my cousins were always playing Alice In Chains. I immediately fell in love and never looked back. This era of music is everything to me. I’ve just never heard anything else like it and I don’t think I ever will. I play guitar and 90’s grunge is what I love to play. I raised my kids on grunge, they can pick out AIC, PJ, Nirvana anytime they hear it. My 20 year old walked through the room while I watched this video and immediately started singing along. My two boys play bass and drums so I hope they bring grunge back! 💪🏻🤘🏻 Love your channel!

Now at 38 years old, I look at this and listen to this and you can hear Layne’s pain. I can understand now what I didn’t understand back when I was a kid. And you can tell Layne Staley was not well here. But he came out, he performed, and he (along with the rest of the bands) laid their souls bare. And what you said, Alice In Chains was the 90s. Nutshell was about how magazines like Rolling Stone only reported on Layne's addiction as if that were the only thing that defined the band. Rolling Stone magazine has some unknown thing to do with the Hall of Fame, and after what Rolling Stone did to Layne and the band in the 1996 The Needle and the Damage Done article ("Oh no, it will be about the music" "Oh yeah, the band's picture will be on the cover" turns out it was only Layne on the cover and the article focused on Layne's addiction -- which Layne DID NOT want to happen -- and everything going wrong internally with the band.) that pissed off AIC management and the entire band to the point they threatened to kick the writer, Jon Weiderhorn's ass over it. I don't see Rolling Stone chomping at the bit to vote AIC into the Hall of Fame. Although if they do finally get in with William as the singer and NOT Layne. I'm going to be pissed. MTV (and the music industry) has more or less blackballed Layne (and yet, they laud over Kurt Cobain every April 5th, because Kurt was the "face of grunge", meanwhile Layne gets a "by the way"). The Grammys went so far as to invite Jerry, Mike and Sean to the Grammy show in 2003 and then refused to put Layne's picture up in the memorial of the musicians who died in 2002. (Or they "forgot" to) which pissed Jerry, Mike and Sean off and they walked out on the show.

Such a great band and Layne was such a unique talent. He could make you feel the song just with his tone... I just can’t listen to these live recordings without thinking about his end, it’s always bitter sweet.

So true Abdallah, the 90‘s Unplugged sessions transported the vibe of this decade and listening to it always pulls me back. I still recall that I taped it on VHS and played it until the cassette died... so much more gigs from then to bring up here, if you can handle it 🤘🏻

as a person who came of age at the same time as these fella's did, and was immersed in the culture as i was, you gotta know: This was nerve racking for Jerry. This was The moment, Jerry knew, that they will either be immortalized as true artists and not just punk grungsters. This night, Jerry was all business. No nods, no real smiles, just nervous, horribly anxious feelings that Laine was going to bring it all crashing down because it WAS A LIVE SHOW, for a video library of MtV's Unplugged series.

The visual aspect of the show was very much a last-minute thing. MTV executives didn't know that Layne's hair was going to be pink, so they had to change the lighting at the last minute, to follow suit. Also, right before the show, Layne had run out to Pike Street market and purchased a whole boatload of candles for the show, and those were implemented as well. I think lava lamps were employed to go along with the newly-acquired lighting theme? Basically, there was something of a circus going on behind the scenes, but it could not have turned out more perfect.

It's hard to describe AIC's music. Dark, haunting, soothing at times. Heavy at others. Always great harmonies. Maybe a cross between Black Sabbath and Simon and Garfunkel.

Layne’s torment is what gave his voice that haunting quality and the writing comes from such a personal, deep and dark place. The line “if I can’t be my own, I’d feel better dead” just hits so much harder now with Layne gone. It’s weird to many I’m sure, because I never knew him, but when I heard the news that he had died, I cried. I’ve never cried for any celebrity or musician dying before or since, but Layne’s death just hit me hard. This song is one of my favorites, and their album “Dirt” is one of the few albums I’d consider to be absolutely perfect, not a bad song on it. There are very few of those out there, another that comes to mind is “Ten” from Pearl Jam.

Heaps glad you said "that is the voice of grunge." I wholeheartedly agree. I grew up in this grunge era listening to bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, but somehow Chains past me by until the late 2000's. What struck me about them from the beginning was how familiar they sounded. It almost felt like the other bands had been telling me about their dear and close friend all this time, and I finally got to meet them. And the meeting was enlightening and humbling. Like finding oneself in the presence of a true master - something one can never truly be prepared for. It also says something about the music of that time, the way all these bands were inspiring one another, and lifting each other up. Honest music is so beautiful like that. And the mastery they displayed of their craft is a privilege to experience still. Sadly, the pain of the time for them was a big part of the fuel for their expression, which breaks my heart now when I listen to songs like this one. I appreciate your video, brotha.

An odd request, but something to consider, even if it's not recorded or what have you. Just something I think everyone who can appreciate AiC should do, if they haven't already. Listen to the studio versions of "Rotten Apple" and "Nutshell" back to back. They go together, it's undoubtedly the same band and even the same session/E.P. but there is some strong differences in depth, vocal layering, and guitar layers on each. Worth your time, in my humble opinion.

This is the deepest song by Alice and Layne. The reason he has this tone in his voice is because he had lost a good number of his teeth at this point due to heroin. He was mourning his partners death due to overdose, and this was one of the last pubic appearances before his death. His music is raw and real. Thank you for the reaction.
