Actually listening to this made me revisit the studio version and apart from the obvious difference (Annette singing rather than Floor) it pretty much sounded identical to this live version. This just goes to show the quality Nightwish have to be able to recreate a studio track to such precision in a live performance. It's astounding to be honest..... But not entirely surprising.

You should definitely listen to Floor’s first band After Forever and their some of songs with Middle Eastern influences: - Follow in the Cry - My Pledge of Allegiance #1 (& also My Pledge of Allegiance #2) - Forlorn Hope - Forever The lyrics of the first 3 song suggestions are written by Mark Jansen, co-founder of After Forever and founder of Epica (after he got kicked out of AF). Some of his lyrics criticize religion, e.g. ‘Islamic’ extremists (Forlorn Hope) or catholic child-abusing priests (Epica - Cry for the Moon). The last suggestion, Forever, was written after Mark’s departure. It only has Middle Eastern influences in the music, not in the lyrics.

Lots of similar themes circle around the Middle-East. Which is only natural when the cultures have been neighbours for ages. I mean some try to say Bible borrowed its Flood story from Gilgamesh, but that's just thinking it too much by the written language. The story had been there verbally long before it was written down. So the resemblance in Sheherazade and Esther is not a proof religion doesn't matter. It just prooves people are talking about the same topics. But if one says a house they saw was red, another says it was blue, and the third one that it was white, they can't be all right; not necessarily any of them. So we have to go check the house to verify the colour. We can also check that God exists: we can pray him. Then he shows he gave us the Bible. Jews introduced monotheism in the area. They didn't copy their religion from Gilgamesh. It's polytheistic story resembling more the Greek pantheon or Asgård etc. Besides, the Judeo-Christian monotheism isn't really a religion - it's a relationship with a person, with God. We people just tend to make religion of it, whether we explain there to be 1, 2, 3 & 1/2 or no gods. It's not about what we say or think: God can speak for himself. He just takes us along, because he would like us to be one. One with each other, one with the animals, the whole planet, universe - all life. Yet God is life, so us being one with life is impossible if we neglect God. It's like denying the very thing or person you're looking for. Because he doesn't suit our imagination? Well, I can't choose to treat other people like that: demanding them to be what I want them to be. So why do we do that to God, to life? We should listen to life, not try to mold it to our pleasure.

As for your question regarding Floor having sung something in Arabic, to my knowledge she hasn't. She likes the middle-eastern vibe though, and she knows about and has used quarter notes (as I read in an interview), if not in this song, then maybe in the song Tribal off their recent album, which also (kind of) has some middle-eastern influences here and there. There's a lyric video for that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWHFeGWZmpqVotE (lyric video) It's a song critical of religion, I hope you're cool with that.

It was a great song, but I like more the studio version with Anette. The rhytic like the riding on the camels, the chasing part like you trying to catch air... It comes back better in the studio version. Another recommendation: The Boy and the Ghost from Tarja. Tarja was the first singer of Nightwish, after they got apart, she continued solo. The Boy and the Ghost is her best solo song, I think.

Since I subscribed and began to see more and more of your Nightwish reactions, I have to say that I really appreciate your enthusiasm. I’ve been living in Finland, the home of Nightwish (as well as many other metal bands-I can only guess at why Scandinavia & Northern Europe breed so much heavy metal) for over 20yrs now and I have been soaked in Nightwish. Seeing the band again through your reactions refreshes my view of them, after pretty much taking them for granted and as just another element of the musical background sound. So thanks a bunch! Only western artist I know who has done a deep dive into that scale is Robert Plant....spending months in Morocco and Mali over the past 50 years, playing music with the Tuaregs and Ganowah (sp?) and attending music festivals north of Timbuktu. Over past 20 years, he has often traveled and toured with Justin Adams, a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist who has made a career of North African music, and he has been joined by West African players. He is a true lover of that scale and has used it to enrich his music.

I really love music that has this Arabian minor feel to it. Especially the ending where Floor is chanting and dancing. I wish they would do more music like this and longer versions. I understand about the actual Middle Eastern scales with 1/4 tones and such. Most Western fans would need to adjust their ears to the 1/4 steps. Never the less this is as close to Middle Eastern as we usually get over here in the West. BTW, I just had a great dinner of Shawarma with some Falafel and various side dishes. It wasn't from Lebanon unfortunately, but it is the best we can do in the States. Great job my friend. see you for the next one. Be well. Peace.

Tuomas has done a number of soundtracks, but yes this really should be but I don't think it has. Checked the background, and supposedly the daughter gets pardoned, but the background also talks of Europeans "extending" the original so I won't make any claims as to whether that is accurate. I'd love to see Tuomas play with unconventional scales and not merely mimic them - although, as you say, he mimics them superbly here. (There's supposedly a 17-note Arabic scale, according to the error-prone Wikipedia anyway. Not sure how that would work with live instruments, but it obviously did if it was indeed used.) Wish more people reacted to this, as it is an amazing song.
