For 200 years, the Arabs and the Armenians have built a bond with Singapore. We examine what it takes for them to preserve that legacy and heritage today.
As Singapore commemorates its bicentennial journey, we look at four small but important communities that make up our vibrant mosaic - Arabs, Parsis, Jews and Armenians.
Find out about the Jews and Parsis living in Singapore: • Jews & Parsis of Singa...

Armenians, Jews, Arabs were part of significant Malaya's immigrant community. David Marshall, The first chief minister of Singapore was Jew. And when you go George Town, Penang, there's a street named Armenian street. But I didn't know they were still living in Singapore. Most of Armenians and Jews in Malaya headed back to their homeland after ww2...

I believe that most of Arab Singaporean were originally from Indonesia. Since many Hadhrami Arabs (South Yemenis) in the past, they settled first in Netherland Indies (Present day Indonesia). Me myself is an Indonesian of Hadhrami descent from Al Hamid of Bin Sheikh Abu Bakr tribes and most of my clan lived in Indonesia.

No wonder many people, even their own think arab singaporean are abit snobbish.. At this age and time they still talk about their family's achievement when they meet each other... And not forgetting that a female arab has to marry a male arab, can't marry other races in singapore according to their family rules. It was actually quite sad when the female arab actually liked a man of other races but still a muslim but her grandmother being very traditional wants her to marry a male arab.

Yes, none of them, while the other ethnicities and/or religious groups, mentioned they appreciate that they are given the space in Singapore to practise their own culture and/or religion. They seem quite insular and very keen to keep their tribal ties with Arabic ancestry, nationality notwithstanding. This makes me wonder is their fidelity with Singapore or to Yemen or Morocco or wherever they trace their tribes from. "Our forefathers were the top traders in Singapore and built Singapore in many ways". As though the Arabs were the only ethnicity at the top of the pyramid to develop the trade in Singapore. ...Smells like superiority complex.
@sofa.4942
@sofa.4942 4 жыл бұрын
@@Catherinetatethefkingliberty it seems very superficial.. like all the fanciness and scholarly achievements.. i mean I get it that they want to keep the Arab numbers stable in Singapore, or else they would die out like the Babas.. but forcing someone not to marry other race is Abit too far especially when it's within the successful Muslim community itself. But not all the Arab families are like that.. It's only some family names
@Catherinetatethefkingliberty
@Catherinetatethefkingliberty 4 жыл бұрын
@@sofa.4942 I don't know if it's superficial. The tracing of family ties back to muhammad, making sure the Arab bloodline is maintained, sound pretty serious to me. I mean, nothing wrong with wanting to know and connecting with ancestral past, and practising the culture, and instinctively preferring to marry within the ethnicity but When their inherent values lie in their ethnicity and it's tribe over nation.....What are the chances of them sticking up for fellow countrymen, regardless of race, language or religion? I don't trust Chinese who think Singapore should align with China due to common ethnicity, same way I don't trust Arabs who put tribe above everything else.
@Interests97
@Interests97 4 жыл бұрын
@@Catherinetatethefkingliberty you talk as if the Arabs of Singapore are significant in numbers. I'm Arab Singaporean and our tribes in Singapore are not as tight as in Yemen. If Singapore goes to war, rest assured it won't be against an Arab country.

When Arab women gets older than 25 years old they are getting ‘old’ lol in Arabic culture so there families calm down a bit and allow them to marry a non Arab (as long as he is Muslim) in most cases. Anyway Armenians are pretty much the same lol our families put pressure on us to only marry another Armenian so our families connect well together. Most traditional cultures do this way. I know in Western Europe you guys marry anyone and do anything you like so it may be a bit strange for you, you are strange for us :)
