Learn ANY language online with a native speaker: go.italki.com/mikestill
It's difficult to truly understand the gap and the differences between fusha Arabic and colloquial Arabic without going through the long process of learning them both as a non-native speaker.
I try to simplify it here and explain that you may encounter a certain reaction from Arabs when speaking and using the fusha Arabic that you've learned from a book.
This is not to say you shouldn't learn fusha Arabic - I believe quite the opposite - but be prepared and be aware that after you have got a good grasp of the language, learn some colloquialisms and local slang phrases to soften the formalities.

Every native Arabic speaker can understand fusha easily. As a native Arabic speaker living in the middle east, I can't understand the accent of the people living in Morocco , it sounds totally a different language . There are so many songs in Arabic language I can't understand their meanings. I really appreciate your efforts to learn one of the hardest languages in the world.

Our Moroccan dialect use pure Arabic words from classical dictionaries that people in Middle East don't know, Arabic is like an ocean, but the main difficulty of Moroccan i think is that we pronounce with sukun, like "3amala cho4laho" become " 3ml ch4lo"

Fusha is taught in school and so every person in gulf countries can speak in fusha. However most speak localized dialects. That said it does make Arabic very interesting as you end up learning a HUGE vocab. Next we arabs inow how difficult Arabic is to someone who speaks a western language. Its not that we are shocked that you are speaking fusha. We are shocked and frankly impressed because its not an easy langauge, the pronunciation alone would put off an english speaker. That said it should be expected that if one is going to learn Arabic it would be fusha. All of the text books/classes/courses would be fusha.

@@McChunkLovesBelgium Germany. Since the country was first truly united in 1871 and before consisted of a loose collection of territories each place has unique traditions and dialects. There was however a time in recent history where parents felt it was better for children to only speak standard german. Dialects don't fit in modern times and people who only speak them are looked at as those village people, not very intelligent. It's better in present times but a lot has been lost due to that mindset.

I'm from Kuwait. Just wanted to point out that 3amiya Arabic (dialect Arabic) is of different dialects (Kuwaiti, Saudi, Egyptian, Lebanon's, etc), however some words could be understood just the same. It's pretty tricky, unfortunately. People from Saudi for example would ask you whether you're Kuwaiti or have been studying in Kuwait just because the dialect you chose to study was Kuwaiti 3amiya @_@ still!! better than nothing. It's really hard so It is REALLY impressive how hard you've worked to study all of that, mate. Keep it up bro. Very inspiring. Cheers

That was a very condensed and informative video. I'm sure I am not alone here, but I did not know there was a classical or modern standard (I'm looking at the comments below for that part--our presenter used a fairly Englic* way of explaining that left a few gaps). Very interesting! *Englic being a way to speak w/ North Americans but remain Brit in presentation).

flawless. well done. I remember my first time learning Arabic when I left my country to study in Egypt. I learned fusha in a language center and started High school after 2 years. I could not understand some words because it was in 3amiya. But with time I got the hang of it. In my early days though, I always responded in Fusha, and people always tried to answer back with fusha. It was funny. It was like they were having difficulties like you would normally have with a completely new language.

I must say, I really agree! I’ve been learning Fusha for a year and a half and I have to say it is just amazing. The level of precision, efficiency, and the different shades of meaning are just unlike any other language in the world and also it sounds super proper and makes me think of the Islamic scholars of old like imam Shafi’i. I want to get really really good at fusha before I go to a dialect since I think many foreigners learning Arabic just spend a little time on fusha to get the basics and go right into dialect without fully getting a solid grasp of fusha.

Hi Mike ! I am very intrigued by your Arabic. I understood everything. Also yes you are right that it’s fusha. Though the reason for Arabs’ reaction is either shocked or stunned is because they don’t normally speak Classical Arabic (fusha). Like let’s say for example, what if someone came to you and spoke completely like Shakespeare (Old English). Sooo I don’t know if that helps to explain to you the situation or reason behind that. By the way love your videos keep going at it!

It's too proper and superficially serious to be used as a conversational language. I would guess the reason might be that a lot of them aren't really fluent in fusha and, so, don't want to tell you that they can't really speak it. That's why they would avoid chatting instead. I'm sure it's not due to disrespect or something like that. لعل السببَ هو عدمُ طلاقتِهم في الفصحى، وهو شيء مؤسف جداً، لذلك تراهم يتفادون الحديث معك لإحساسهم بالحرج من أن يظهروا لك عجزهم عن التحدث بها.
