White Guys Bargain in Perfect Mandarin at Chinese Market, Amaze Vendors

My friend Evan and I, two white guys who speak extremely good Mandarin, some Cantonese, and a little bit of Fuzhounese, went bargain hunting and haggling at the dry goods and vegetable markets of NYC Chinatown. A veritable market spree! We walked up to various Chinese vendors, started speaking with them in English, and then switched over mid-conversation to Mandarin and Cantonese (and Fuzhounese once or twice!). Their reactions were hilarious! Hope you enjoy this day in our lives! And hopefully this is helpful to you guys in your language learning journeys!

Zeena Abdura yes they’re in NYC but many of them don’t leave the area very often, as such there’s really no need for them to bother learning English as they tend to interact with the same people each day. They usually just learn enough to sell their products to tourists.

Yes, I am ethnically Korean, but I was born in America, I don't speak fluent Korean smh (although I am getting there!). So yeah, i was totally intrigued they werent immediately complimenting his chinese. I know for sure if a white person walked up to me and started speaking Korean I would be really taken aback!

It must be really sad living in a country where you can economically prosper, but your scope of who you can communicate with is so limited. When they hear them speaking, it instantly opens up that scope and is an absolute breath of fresh air, as many of them feel trapped socially.

I grew up in a small town with a mostly German ancestry and I would ask the old guys at work, one gentleman in particular, to teach me some Low German. We would be saying things in German and I would ask him something in English and he would still be thinking in German and start talking German and then switch to English, then grin. Good memories.

For the Chinese, we have many unsaid codes in our world, and we usually don't trust outsiders. It's more of a trust relationship between people of the same language, because our ways are different from others. In a way, we don't like other people and keep to ourselves. I agree with your sentiment. It’s hard enough moving to a new country, and although they may live with other people that speak their language I think it may be intimidating to ever leave the community, which probably keeps them really secluded, in a sense. They’re trying to make money and learning a language is difficult. It must be a nice surprise when someone you really don’t expect can speak your language.

Thing I loved most about China when I visited was that even a few basic phrases and the locals lit up and got excited. I love seeing how happy people are to speak in their native tongue. Chinese people are insanely friendly!

As a native bilingual, hearing my "mother" tongue is in fact special. I'm starting to think Spanish is just nicer sounding than English. I really don't think Mrs. Mandela knew what she was talking about. English sounds too "formal" and stiff. Spanish sounds free and something else. I can't pinpoint it. I can't read Spanish stuff with the same level of comprehension I can in English, though. 😔📖 Makes sense since I went to school here in the USA. But yeah, Mrs. Mandelllla is wrong. But he's right for the vast majority of non-native proficiency bilinguals.

learning a new language is actually super easy with proper approach, the key is to have fun learning and not to rely on self-discipline. Try pimsleur, you'll be able to have a conversation with a native speaker in any language within 30 days, 30 minutes a day, i promise! of course, mastering a language is a different thing but if you want to be conversationally fluent itll take months not years

I love this! When I was younger, I used to go to Tokyo with some friends and we'd do something similar. I've been to China and it's a very hard language to learn. The intonation is very different and difficult. You all did great and it was a joy to see you speak. You're nice folks and help bridge the foreigner gap. BTW, the way to bargain in China is find out the price, offer half, and walk out. Most shops sell the same thing. If one vendor doesn't meet your price, walk out and go to the next. Most times they will follow you out and offer a reduced price. You'll get an idea of how much they can sell something for and can adjust your offer accordingly. I got tired of negotiating so I'd offer a price, then walk out. Much faster and easier than all the bickering. My husband, who works in China tells the store employee how great it is to see them again, and glad that they remember him. Then he says he wants the same thing again for the same price. No employee will admit they don't know or remember him so they will say yes. Then hubby buys the item with very little negotiation. He does have a general idea of what things go for though, so he's not low balling them. He's just getting a regular price offered to locals (they will quote higher for foreigners).

I would agree if this guy was not in THE UNITED STATES. ;) It is great when you to to another country and speak their language, or attempt to. I find that the locals become very friendly and go out of their way to then speak YOUR language. But the fat that this video was made in the US seems to be lost by everyone. The real issue is why these Chinese people who live in the US don't speak OUR language better. And it should be why are they cold, and even hardly helpful before they were spoken to in Cantonese. ;)

You might have to do it in an immersive environment. If you're not always reverting back to English, and you're always being spoken to in another language, you will begin to think in that language.

Same here. It took me over ten years to start thinking in English. I, too, was always in translation mode. Army basic training was really tough for me. I didn't understand their slang and everyone had a different English accent! Even now, I can type decently, but can't have a normal English conversation without stumbling every two words. I also have a really thick accent!

You need to learn to think in their language, I am studying Japanese, although I don't live there, I have learned how to form basic sentences and advance slowly. Just keep studying and you shall learn, it's all about motivation my friend, if you feel discouraged just because "You cannot think like them" or perhaps you underestimate yourself, just destroy them mental barriers.
