Venus just rolling in serves and generally playing into Vicario's hands the whole match. Odd match from her. ASV showing all her experience and skillset here though, never giving Venus any rhythm and out-maneuvering her in long baseline rallies.

I could never understand that result. ASV usually easily defeated conchita and was such a fighter. She seemed so out of sorts and lacked any fight in the semis.

I will never understand what happened to Arantxa in the semi's....BTW Arantxa is the ONLY player who played Serena more than 3 times and had a winning record...4-3.

Same! With such a great record against Conchita, I felt like a place in the final was a formality. This felt like an Arantxa who was on her way to the final. Rarely, did I feel so confused as I did after the semi. I always assumed there was something that happened off-court that meant my girl wasn't mentally there for the next match.

I think it's like what Chris Evert said once - that the older you get, the more that inconsistency sets in. You can play brilliantly one match and then go off a cliff in the next. She said that's what happened in her last US Open when she crushed Monica seles in round 4 then played poorly against Zina Garrison. We saw some similar things happen to Roger Federer late on in his career. Arantxa wasn't too far from the end of her career here.

Venus didn’t do anything with the ball in this match other than retrieve. When playing against a clay court specialist such as Arantxa, you MUST have a plan and execute it beautifully - Venus did not do that in this match. Kudos to Arantxa for this win.

Yes Venus was very poor here. Aimlessly rallying with Sanchez on red clay was not going to get the job done (even in 2000 when ASV was past her best).
