He is speaking Albanian like an Italian does I have relatives that are born and raised in Italy that speak like him. Old arbëresh after Ottoman invasion must’ve sounded different but it’s just amazing they kept their language after nearly 600 years we truly are very tough people.

My family escaped Albania (from Leskovik and Gjirokaster) in 1949 and went to Ioanina, Northern Greece as refugees. They spoke Tosk. They made it to the US in 1961. My mother was 9 when they fled Albania. Because she was schooled in Greece, she only knew how to speak Albanian, not read or write it. My grandparents and other relatives never attended school, so they also could only speak it. My father was also schooled in Greece. When my grandparents died, I rarely heard Albanian except for my fathers records and cassettes. But he died young and his records and cassettes were tossed. My family learned English and either spoke that or Greek, since there were few Albanians around and many Greeks here in NYC. I think I met my first Albanian in my 20’s and I couldn’t understand him. Now I have many Albanians in my city and still can barely understand them 😔 But I understand about 75% of what you spoke! I cried a little. I can also understand a good amount of Arvanitika, but there are hardly any Arvanitika speakers around anymore. I don’t know what language I learned from my family - some form of Tosk, with Greek, and Arvanitika added, which reflected their journey in life. I wish I had others who could speak it and help me to learn it better. I have no children, so no one to pass it on to, but it was my first tongue that my mother and grandmother sang to me in. It was the language my father tucked me into bed with at night and told me silly stories and sang to me in. And it’s a language that stirs my heart and makes it beat with joy, aching sadness, and pride.

Martin this is a very interesting and I am noticing, vast point of view shared between Arbereshe and Arvanites ‘speakers’. Although it is so interesting for me to notice that these dialects do have many ancient sounding words in comparison to the Albanian that I know. However, I would like to give you a perspective, an example starting with myself and adding family members who have been born in the UK. I was born in Tirana to two Gheg speakers, I learned the written dialect: Letrare added with some Gheg from my family that speak 100% Gheg dialect. Everyone I meet in Albania and from Albania in other countries tell me that I speak very clear in a way seemingly understood by everyone(Tosk and Gheg), in south they mostly assume I am an Albanian from Kosove, mid and North they identify I am from out of Alb. It is apparent to me that even though I am extremely fluent, the fact that I have adapted a native english accent has made it extremely hard for me as an Albanian born person to not have a slight english accent when speaking Albanian whether I am speaking Letrare (from Tirana) or Gheg words/phrases. Again I notice those born here have slight english accents when speaking albanian no matter how fluent they are. So I would like to form some questions based on this logic. 1. Is it possible that within the generations, accents have been added to Arbereshe speakers as they became fluent in Italian in the same way happens to me and others in the UK? I assume if my descendants had no contact with Albania ‘the country’ apart from me and others who spoke like me in the UK, Albanian would sound further away from the Albanian I learned as a child, also due to my assimilation with gjuha letrare and my Gheg background. We have therefore already created a different dialect and added an english sort of accent to our Albanian. Thus, I propose this can explain some differences between Arbereshe and Arvanites to Albanian. Do you agree this may have happened generation after generation more and more? 2. Gheg and Tosk are very different in dialect, however, I think it is impossible to call them different languages, it is obvious they are from the same branch. However this otherness I am nuancing from Arbereshe and Arvanites is not new, this exists in Albania v Kosovo, Albania v Maqedons and Veri v Jug. Is it possible that this otherness in speech and ‘accent’ is something that is inherent in Albanians? There is also a lot of competition from city to city, town to town. Can this possibly be deduced as something that is a part of who we are, due to our Besa traditions of seeing people outside of our fis as potential competitors? I see people with Tosk accents judge Gheg accents (possibly due to the written language being tosk) and Gheg speakers assume their dialect is the ‘original’ Albanian because of Enver Hoxha’s attempt at minimising Gheg influence in society. Do you believe Arbereshe and Arvanites reluctance to identify as albanian speakers may also derive from some sort of socio-political disagreements? (Such as no ottoman influence on the language etc) 3. Luckily I grew up in the UK as my first experience as a foreigner or immigrant. I did not have any typical stereotypes attached to me growing up as my friends and their parents did not know much about Albanians. However, is it possible that this reluctancy to claim Albanian and Arbereshe as the same language of Tosk and Gheg, because of certain discriminations faced by our people in countries that knew of them and may have formed some stereotypes of them? Could this explain why early Albanian immigration may have led to communities assimilating as much as possible? It seems (from outside) as though the more they accepted their Italian/greek citizenship the more they lost their connection to their Albanian land. (This is not minimising how beautifully the heritage has been cherished however). And to me it seems as the only reluctance is to claim a citizenship outside of the place they currently live (as I do see how distinct the Arbereshe are from native Italians) 4. Finally, a final question, is it possible that the religious ties that Arbereshe have, have also influenced them somehow? A saying goes, an Albanian’s religion is Shqiptar. I would love to find out more about traditions that Arbereshe and Arvanites hold that are not in keeping with abrahamic faiths, and any overlap they may have with Albanian paganism that has managed to survive throughout all of the foreign invasions and religious influence. Such as the equinox and Gjama e burrave (funeral rituals) etc. Finally, apologies if I am not 100% correctly informed, I only learned about the Arbereshe around 7 years ago and am yet to visit, but cannot wait! Therefore, I was wondering, if you know, have any DNA tests been recorded from all of these populations to record overlaps with Albanians? Sorry for the long message, I am crazy for anything remotely Albanian as I am super interested in my roots and the history of my ancestors.

I'm from the UK too, but I came here aged 2. I've always been interested in Albanian history. I've travelled to Italy often and have family who have intermarried with Arbreshe. Yes, it is possible that over generations, accents have been added to Arbereshe speakers as they became fluent in Italian, just as accents can change over time when a language is influenced by another English is an example of a language that changed over time due to influence from other languages. The Vikings brought Old Norse to England, which introduced new words and structures. The French language was also introduced during the Norman Conquest and had a significant impact on English vocabulary. More recently, English has been influenced by languages from around the world, resulting in new loanwords, idioms, and changes in grammar and pronunciation.. Thus, it is plausible that this may explain some differences between Arbereshe and Arvanites to Albanian. This has happened to Arvanites in Greece as unlike Italy, the Arvanites in Greece were discouraged from speaking Arvantika and forced to assimilate into a Greek identity. During the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in Greece, if you was a muslim Albanian you was referred to as a 'Turk', while an Albanian Christian as a 'Roman', this happens even today in Albania. Gheg and Tosk are indeed from the same branch, and although they are different dialects, they are not considered different languages. The otherness in speech and 'accent' between Albanians may be inherent due to cultural and socio-political factors such as competition from city to city and town to town. It is possible that Arbereshe and Arvanites reluctance to identify as Albanian speakers may derive from socio-political disagreements such as no Ottoman influence on the language and the fact that the Arbreshe belong to the Byzantine Rite of Eastern Catholic Church, which is rare in itself even in the Catholic Church. Discrimination faced by Albanians in different countries may have formed some unfavourable stereotypes of Albanians that could contribute to a reluctance to claim Arbereshe as the same language as Tosk and Gheg. Early Albanian immigration may have led to communities assimilating as much as possible, and the more they accepted their Italian citizenship, the more they may have lost their connection to their Albanian land. This has happened even as recently as the 90s, for example many children of Albanian immigrants to Greece claim they are Greek and at times hide their Albanian heritage. While for example in Switzerland, Albanians are more proud in claiming their heritage due to Switzerland not having negative stereotypes about them in the press. There may be traditions that Arbereshe and Arvanites hold that are not in keeping with Abrahamic faiths, but this is very rare and from personal experience i have seen that they are generally very strict with keeping to the teachings of the Catholic Church. This is something that was lost in Albania due to Ottoman influence and then later to the Hoxha regime. Many converted to Islam during the Ottoman Empire for an easier life as you would get taxed more heavily and treated as a secondary citizen if you claimed to be a Christian. So, even in Albanian itself over the generations many folk beleif's were lost. Lastly, I have always been interested in genetics and mostly have focused on the different fiset of Albania. I remember that the Arbreshe in Sicily from Piagna degli Albanesi are more closely related to modern Albanians genetically through DNA. While the Arbreshe from Calabria are usually closer to Southern Italians. The Y-dna of certain Arbreshe villages matches more closely to neighbouring Italian villages than Modern Albanians, showing that a part of the local Italian population were assimilated into the Arbreshe.

Une vete perpiqem te flas shqip edhe kur shumica e shqiptareve perdorin fjale te "medha" te huajtura nga Italishtja, Greqishtja, apo Anglishtja. Ne lajme nje dite, gazetarja shqiptare tha "kongresmenja"... ne te vertete duhet ta perkthente "anetarja e Kongresit" ndoshta edhe "kongresistja" ... por ne po i marrim fjalete e huaja sic jane kongresmen/kongresmene! eshte "congresswoman" ne origjinal. Shume gazetare neper televizione perdorin flaje te huaja pa kuptim per te treguar qe dine shume(!). Nuk jam i sigurt nese ishte Shirak, por e di qe nje president francez nxori ligj per mediat te paguajne denim per fjalet e thena ne Anglisht kur e njejta fjale gjendet edhe ne Frengjisht. Ndoshta Shqiperia do te perfitonte nga nje ligj i tille.

Nuk pajtohem me Martinin kur thote se eshte kunder prurjeve te shqipes. Per faktin se gjuha arbereshe nuk eshte e levruar mire si gjuhe, eshte teper e limituar dhe e thjeshtuar si ne komunikim e lexim. Huazimet ndihmojne ne plotesimin e saj, te zhvillimit dhe kuptueshemerise ndaj dialekteve tjera shqipe, e si rrjedhoje i jep me shume dobi, vlere e rezistence si gjuhe. Perndryshe gjuha arbereshe po vanitet, po largohet dita dites nga trungu dhe nga dialektet tjera neper Itali, derisa ne nje kohe jo fort te larget te behet e padobishme e te zhduket fare. Ky ritem i fundit per te huazuar nga shqipja mund te ndihmoje per te perafruar dialektet me njera-tjetren ne aspektin e perkohshem te pakten. Ne 600 vjet nuk ka patur asnje riformatim dhe per mendimin tim gjuha arbereshe ka pak nevoje te rinjohe rrenjet e saje. Keshtuqe nuk duhet pare ne aspektin negativ e te tharte ashu si shpeshhere Martini ben te kuptoje.
