Great review. I must have watched it a few times now. I'm in the market for a RTT. I was wondering after having the Simpson for a couple of years now how is the coating holding up? Any peeling are delamination? From what I could find out the Simpson is waterproof coated, not impregnated like some more expensive brands. Thanks.

Hey CO, I have to be honest pal, we're kind of fair weather campers and don't do a lot of extreme (rain or snow) camping. The tent spends most of the time folded up and is not exposed to UV so our tent still looks like new. Haven't experienced any of the issues you've mentioned. Thanks for watching.

Hey thank you for the great review first and foremost. I now realize that I need this in my life. I just have a few questions if you get around to them: 1. How easy is this thing to pack up? Initial setup looks like a breeze I just am struggling to find video evidence of packing this thing back in its cover. 2. On a multi day camp/hiking trip where you are leaving your rig for a full day of adventures and then returning, how would you secure your stuff in a crowded area? (If it is as easy to fold up as it is to set up I would gather you could just pack it up after each night) Overall this was a spectacular review and I really believe that a rooftop tent would be a great solution for a shelter while still maintaining all of the usability of your rig. I have been bouncing back and forth between a truck camper or a little trailer or a van or countless other options but now I realize that for me a rear mounted ARB Simpson iii rooftop tent with an awning would go perfect on an old truck with a topper and then you'd have access to the full truck box and at the same time still keep all of the "truck stuff" in your rig without hauling around this big bulky truck camper. Hi Nick, thanks for checking out the review. Here's the answers to your questions: 1. Packing up the tent is just the reverse of the setup procedure in the video and just as easy. 2. Typically when we're away from the rig we just lock anything that might walk away inside the truck. We don't fold up the entire tent until we're ready to leave. Don't forget, if you opt for the annex option the ladder is inside and you can zip the annex closed. It would have to be a pretty bold individual to open up your annex and go inside. Happy trails!

Well i'll be dammed..... One of them US boys just told us Aussie's how its done! Well Done sir, i'm impressed! I've seen many set ups, many RTT's, many Camp sites, but what you presented was brilliant. I will say this though, in Australia we use these products for Desert Crossings where taking a Camping Trailer is not advised. The idea of rain is almost a non event, but if and when it does, it will be 3 days of it and you're not going anywhere until the tracks become drive able again.

Just purchased an ARB RTT , very pleased with it but having great difficulty In getting the thick cover over all 4 corners, it seems like it needs to stretch more to get over all the corners. Would it be easier if I took the cover completely off, not hanging by the seam on one side, coming straight down from the top on all 4 corners? Thanks, Bob

Stellar review. I'm going to travel the U.S. this summer, and considering picking up an SUV and a roof top tent.. Would you feel comfortable using this for a 2+ week excursion? Does dew buildup on the inside? What if it's pouring rain when you take it down, and want to use it the following night?

+Sarah Dell Sorry for the late response Sarah. I absolutely think the rooftop tent is the way to go. Quick setup and teardown and no dew builds up because of the roof vents on the tent. If it got very cold maybe you would but since you're traveling during summer shouldn't be a problem. You just wouldn't want to store the tent for a long time without letting it dry out completely. +Wesley McGonagle Like I said in the video "If there were a better system out there, I'd own it" I did a lot of research before I bought my own tent. I went to Dirty Parts www.dirtyparts.com and Larry the owner has one mounted to his FJ and was nice enough to open it up and show me around. After he pointed out all the features and I saw the quality of the build first hand I was sold on the Simpson. Hope that helps. ;^)

We bought one of these largely due to this well produced video. Unfortunately we had a series of rather serious serious QC issues with the installation of the tent, which have left us rather disappointed and troubled. 1. after installing the mounting rails to the bottom of the tent we had two of the self tapping sheet metal screws back out and then lift each rail bout an inch off the edge while the bolt held the center snug. After applying even more pressure on the drill, the screw finally went in but the head sheared off the cheap screw, and the entire effort proved damaging and ineffective. Result is that each rail is only held at one end by a set screw, and both are slightly bent at the other end. As a workaround I drilled two new self tapping screws through the wider channel but now have to slide the mounting brackets in from the far side. 2. when attempting to install the spring rods, we came upon a hole that was not drilled properly. There was only a dimple there, not a hole. I tried drilling the hole at a 45 degree angle, but the rod will not seat properly now. 3. the fabric of the bed mat is torn where it was pinched in the crease of the tent base once unfolded. These issues could have been avoided with basic inspection and care at the factory, instead of being shipped from China to Seattle to Vermont for our disappointment. We have not even used the tent yet, and have not heard back from ARB USA yet.

Thanks so much for the thorough review! My wife and I are researching various systems and have had a hard time finding good information on their features. A question: We're planning to spend a good amount of time camping in the heat of summer. It looks like you and your wife have a great set up for cooler conditions, but have you used this particular tent in much warmer weather? If so, how's the ventilation? We've read reviews about some RTTs turning into ovens in the summer heat. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Setting the ladder off the back is perfect for your clam-shell tailgate on the Landcruiser. I don't think it would work with the 4Runner one piece lift gate. Guess I will have to look for an 80 series as well. Thanks for the great review!

Bro, I've had a lot of folks ask about how it might work with a one piece hatch. I'm not sure if it would clear but I think if you mounted it far enough back on the roof it just might.The half that hangs over the back of the truck is 49" long so if your rear hatch is less than that you should be golden. 😉 Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I mounted my cvt to open to the back like yours. This way when I put on the annex room on, it is connected to the back of my truck and canopy.

Back again. Just a passing thought, hope the lanyard on the zipper works for you. I had problems with the zipper catching onto the tent material thus playing hell trying to untangle the zipper. Ah! That's what the straps are for!!!! Thanks again! Best of luck.

Excellent review, very professional. Big drawback in my opinion to this arb is the annex has no floor, so really water can easily get in as well as bugs/rodents etc. Most other roof top tents now come with an annex floor for obvious reasons

great tent review... very well made ... have the same tent and have a love - hate relationship with it.. very tough getting in..6'4" and the zipper bit the dust sort of speak, and the fly with an average wind will keep you up all night flapping...and the mattress not well liked by any one who prefers a softer bed..

Great video. Thinking of purchasing ARB RTT. Very interested in placing it the way you did so it opens towards back. Can you please tell me what is the width of the tent when it sits this way? From left to right? ARB gives the sizes on their website but not the directions with them so hard to tell if it fold open by wider part or narrower part. Thanks in advance

It actually folds by the narrower dimensions. Width (left to right) is 55" when open and 57" closed because it bellows a bit when you fold it up and tuck everything into the cover. +Noah Rowe Hey Noah, tent comes with mounting hardware. Bolt heads slide into a track on the bottom of the floor of the tent. Slide the bolts next to your Yakima bars (one on either side) and attach the included flat bar and tighten up the included nuts and lock washers. Easy peezy!

very good video. these tents really make camping that much better by dodging the snakes and spiders and been a 2 minute setup if you don't use the annex
