The Arbatel: Magic of the Ancients - Arbatel De magia veterum - published in 1575 represents a dramatic shift in magical theory and practice. Both looking back to the Olympic Planetary Spirits of the ancient Hellenistic Pagan World but also very modern for the time, embracing both Calvinism and the alchemic and magical ideas of Paracelsus. This grimoire, or magical handbook, also provides one of the most clear and beneficent forms of magic ever developed, marked by simple piety, streamlined ritual and one's ethical duty to God, Self & Neighbors. Indeed, virtually every magical handbook published after would, in some way, be influenced by it's magic: from Dr. John Dee's Enochian sessions, the early Rosicrucians & the African magical traditions of the Caribbean and North America. Join me as I explore this fascinating, revolutionary and influential book of magical theory and practice!

Doesn’t using the Arbatel as a guideline for prayer seem a tad off? I completely agree that modern families fail to instruct their own on how to connect with the divine / have a relationship. Not to mention how to think (philosophize), etc. Yet I can’t help but read your comment and find it a bit confusing. If I were to embark on a journey, to discover how to pray and connect with the divine, I’d imagine the Arbatel would be extremely distant from sources & texts I might utilize initially. Simply seeking to better understand, all love brother ❤

Yes! The full name of Paracelsus as uttered by Justin Sledge! Need an upcoming spoken word album! Coming into Arbatel by way of Paracelsus and the Olympic Spirits (band name?) from tomes by Frater Acher and Joseph Peterson's book featured on Foolish Fish, my interest is now lately piqued as happens synchronously/serendipitously as also recommended by Josephine McCarthy on Glitch Bottle Podcast! I love the thumbnail! I am beginning to appreciate Justin Sledge's independent rigorous stance on the provenance of tomes, grimoires and practices, often presented by practitioners, however rigorous and studied. What sets Esoterica apart from participant is Dr Sledge's essential academic esoteric lens! Otherwise I might think mystical Quabala or Qabalistic magic, for example, might just be the end-all without a clue as to how to study the Kabbalah!

As Bardon teaches in PME, the only thing necessary for working with spirits is that a preferable location is prepared for them to manifest. He recommends you only work with entities who are kind and do so throug negotiation rather than coercion, but neither are mandatory. Same with all the incense and garb: if you need it, that's fine, but they're just tools that lead to a certain result, not the result itself or even its cause.

Thanks for this episode Dr. Sledge! My favorite episode yet! As I love reading over the Arbatel over and over. As per my comment in the community section of this channel: Of all the Grimoires I read, it feels like the Arbatel is the most “Christian”, (for the lack of a good descriptor, whatever that means*) of all the grimoires. At least it feels like a Grimoire written and intended for someone who has a devout Christian world view. Like for Clergy or observants of the Christian faith. In my own channel I intend to visit the Arbatel and De Oculto Philosopia Libre Tres of Agrippa and how it casts a incredibly long shadow on the syncretic Philippine magical tradition.

@Fr.O.G.
@Fr.O.G. Жыл бұрын
@@consonantsandvowels1 Have you ever met someone who insists on correcting the grammar of others, but their corrections are wrong? That's what Skinner often does. I can point to a specific example in The Complete Magician's Tables. In the table labeled "Magical Objectives and Abilities" (M29, pg 213), Skinner tries to correct Crowley's 777 by moving "making of talismans" from water to earth. This is wrong for two reasons. The first reason is simple historicity. Crowley isn't the first person to associate making talismans with water. Crowley gets this association from the Golden Dawn's Z2 documents. The second point why this is wrong is theoretical: Why did the Golden Dawn associate water with the making of talismans? Think less "water" and more "the formula of the cup." A talisman is a receptacle for a force. It is a focus through which that force operates. A talisman is not the crystallization of a force. Moving the making of talismans to earth (that is Assiah, the realm of manifestation), implies the work is already finished. This is a seemingly small change that can mislead the initiate for years because the initiate is to be a talisman for their Holy Guardian Angel. If any of that makes sense. The upshot is, The Complete Magician's Tables are full of these little attempts to correct things that weren't wrong. Also, on another, personal note, I find the layout of the book deceptively impractical. At first glance, it seems laid out in more logical manner than similar attempts. And then you try to use it and find that, no, in fact everything is scattered everywhere. It only looks better laid out. That said, I do find the appendices ("Commentary") worth at least one read through.

The Arbatel is one of my favorite works of the occult, so I'm overglad to see this pop up on your channel! Lovely stuff and extremely fascinating You mentioned Houdoo, unsure quite how to spell that, and one of my primary studies, in so much as a non-academic can be said to 'have' a study, is Pennsylvania Dutch Braucherei, which by the way I'd love to watch a video about that lovely topic if you've ever the ability and inclination. Also known as powwowing but I dislike that term and prefer not to use it for likely obvious reasons, it's a very interesting ritual tradition out of North America which bears many interesting similarities to the contents of the Arbatel, even as it lacks most of the more obviously occult bits like the glyphs and whatnot. The directionality, the timings mentioned, in particular the ethics of the text remind me greatly of it, especially the focus on magic being a cooperative action between God and the practitioner A prayer used in Braucherei that I've come to know illustrates that well in "mei Hand un dei Hand iss Gottes Hand" (my hand and your hand is god's hand) and "mei Fuuss un dei Fuuss sinn gleich" (my foot and your foot are alike) -the Red Church, Bilardi (source) There's this idea that 'trying' (Braucherei is the tradition, brauche is the verb meaning to do Braucherei upon another, this is often translated as 'trying' or 'trying for' somebody) is not the work of the Braucher upon the patient, but rather of a collaboration of the two united in God (or some higher power, opinions varied historically and presently about the nature of belief in regards to Brauche's effectiveness), that it is God performing the action not the Braucher but that both the patient and Braucher are themselves part and parcel of God and it is through this connection that the work is done, channeled through the Braucher. -Powwowing in Pennsylvania: Braucherei and the ritual of everyday life, Patrick Donmoyer (absolutely lovely text by the way, best book I've seen yet of Braucherei and extremely influential on my thinking of things around the subject. Not expensive, and high quality, would strongly recommend getting it if any reading this are interested. Good intro and goes well in depth as well) (source) note on pronunciation of Pa Dutch Pa Dutch in Pa Dutch is 'Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch' (also spelt Pennsylvaanisch Deitsch) Eastern varieties of Deitsch monophthongise 'au' such that it sounds the same as 'ah' (as if of German orthography, i.e. [a:] in the IPA) Western varieties instead monophthongise 'ei' such that it sounds the same as 'äh' (as above. [ɛ:], like 'get' but a longer vowel) I speak an eastern kind, so I'd say 'deitschi Mahs' instead of a western 'däätschi Maus' (I'd however spell it 'deitschi Maus' meaning Pa Dutch mouse) Because of this, 'Braucherei' is pronounced by myself as 'Brahcherei' as tortured as that orthography looks [bɾaːxəʼɾaɪ̯] (like brah che REI), note the stress is on the last syllable. The 'AA' of Pennsilfaanisch is pronounced as a low back rounded vowel, akin to the 'aw' of certain English dialects such as you might find in 'dawn' or 'caught' American English often has an unrounded vowel there, but it is the rounded version that is similar to the Pa Dutch 'AA' digraph [ʼpɛnsɪlʼfɒːnɪʃ Daɪ̯ʧ ] That is essentially all necessary to pronounce the bits of Pa Dutch in this comment correctly, should one already have an understanding of how to pronounce German as the orthography I use is based on that.

it amuses me that of all Paracelsus' work, what remains most influential is his invention of Gnomes. Yeah, the garden guys, DnD race etc. Gnomes. Thanks, Theo.

I'm a bit annoyed with the Golden Dawn brick which states that the Olympic Spirits originate from the Heptameron. For my spiritual curriculum, I had to reproduce the sigils for these spirits, and I went and ordered a copy of the Heptameron (the one you recommended, Dr Sledge!) because I wanted to learn more about these spirits. There's nothing else in the GD brick about them aside from the Heptameron reference. Well, I guess I need an Arbatel now. 😅 Thank you for the very informative video! It is a nice synchronicity to have this video appear soon after I took a week to complete my set of sigils. I did them up nice in Illustrator, making one per day, following the planetary ruler of the day and following the GD color correspondences.

This is the White Magic of the Magi, a musical magic of the Spheres that is echoed in Hecate's song as echoed by that beautiful singer of Space Time. I am the Piper called by God that will lead us to reason. ❤

Love your channel. Man it really shows the WIDE breadth and variety within that comes under the heading of Mysticism and the Occult. You mention The Golden Dawn in this one. Do you have any other videos that go into that realm?

Interesting that the Christian prayer " The Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven" is the essence of "As above, so below." Intersting, but not surprising. Considering the Keeper of all this Magic is everywhere. And always.
