How Exorcism Became Medieval Necromancy & Demonic Conjuration - History of Magic

Medieval necromancy is strangely uniform in its rituals, language and symbols despite being an underground movement at the heterodox periphery of the minor clergy. What explains this uniformity? An important cause goes to the origins of medieval necromancy itself - that European Necromancy originates in the ancient rituals of Exorcism. In this episode I explore the relationship between exorcism and demonic conjuration from an exorcism ritual divinely revealed to Hildegard of Bingen, a mirror that summons Lilith to reveal mysteries, a bizarre exorcism in the horrid witch-hunting manual Malleus Maleficarum to Exorcism Manuals so close to magic that they were eventually banned by the Catholic Church.

I'm glad the necromancy terminology got addressed, since "Necromancy is about dealing with the dead" is such an established association nowadays that, as a casual viewer, it *is* somewhat surreal hearing about purely-demon-based necromancy. Either way, yay for the clerical necromantic underground!

Of course, there's always a first time. And I was brought up properly. I know it's not polite to interrupt. So you just go ahead. Talk all you want. And when you're done, go home. I don't remember the specifics, but I listened to an interview with a woman who purported to identify and negotiate with possessing entities (though she used much less spooky terminology, maybe something to do with energy?) According to her, there are lots of different kinds, each with their own characteristics. One thing that stuck with me was that, unlike the bossing and humiliation that seems to be foundational to exorcism (all that commanding and compelling and reminding them that they're never going to win), she was very respectful. She'd ask what the entity wanted, saying she'd help if she could. She often had to explain that the person or place possessed (again, not her lexicon) really couldn't provide what the entity was after, or even that the entity had no right to it (basically, "You're behaving like an entitled prat.") It sounded very much like a parent refereeing siblings, TBH. Nonetheless, I was struck by the novel approach of diplomacy she used rather than the traditional domination (in all its forms)

Coincidentally enough, the clerical necromantic underground is a major plot point in a game I just finished playing, 'Pentiment' by Obsidian Entertainment, makers of 'Fallout: New Vegas'. It's a brilliant point-and-click multi-generational murder mystery set in an alpine Bavarian village and monastery in the early decades of the Protestant Reformation, with art directly inspired by period woodblock prints and manuscript illuminations, and it really succeeds spectacularly at breathing life into history. It's fantastic, I highly recommend it, and I find it a remarkable coincidence that you released this video explaining that a clerical necromantic underground was an actual historical phenomenon less than a day after I finished playing a game in which it features prominently, plausibly portrayed in its proper historical context.

Something interesting which I thought of when you mentioned LDS baptisms for the dead. I was raised LDS and the weirdness goes deeper than I think anyone realizes. The prophet Joseph Smith was actually a necromancer, as was his father Smith Sr. If you want to jump down a rabbit hole look up the Smith family parchments, ceremonial dagger, and particularly his 'seer' stone or Jupiter talisman. LDS church history is as fantastical as it is explicitly heretical.

I am intensely curious about what i perceive as an overlap between hildegard of bingen's exorcism and that of the ritualism displayed in bdsm. in both, the subject centers themself within a shadow play depicting a totality of their world: hildegard's exorcism leverages the cultural understanding of god and the world as described in christian dogma to give faces to the forces acting upon the subject, bdsm similarly acting as a microcosm of our modern drama of the world as a place of tense but supposedly mutually beneficial domination and subversion. a recalcitrant demon and a bratty submissive resemble one another. however in exporcism the demon is seen as an interloper to be drawn out, whereas within d&s the subject is portraying their own identity being strung between the recalcitrance and ultimate submission. the dominant additionally seeks to draw out the "good" "obedient" person within the subject, whereas the exorcist is attempting to draw out the "malicious" persona of a demon. ultimately i am fascinated by the way that narratives have to be in place for certain forms of healing or catharsis to take place. thanks for reading this, it means i wasn't censored for making vague reference to sexuality. sigh lol.

On the "anyone can do a baptism as long as they follow the proper rituals" thing, my dad actually did this with my brother as a form of light protest against his inlaws. My grandfather is a 2nd generation Irish immigrant, his mom went through a lot of crap when she got here, and he went through a lot of crap for being who he was as well, so he was pretty attached to certain aspects of our Irish identity, most specifically our Catholicism. To stop being Catholic was basically to stop being Irish in his eyes. Both of my parents went to very strict Catholic schools though and were pretty disenchanted with Catholicism, so we were never religious, although we did the big sacraments and put on a good face for my grandparents. Apparently though, this was a matter of some contention for my dad, and so, while he caved and had me baptized in a Catholic church like my grandparents wanted, by the time my brother was born, he had apparently reached this same conclusion regarding what Catholic doctrine said about the authority of the church in this matter, and so he baptized my brother in the bathtub himself, following the whole baptism ritual just like a priest would so that he could fight my grandfather on any claims that my parents never had my brother baptized. Being a kid, I never got to see what the fallout from this looked like, but I imagine my grandfather wasn't particularly happy. My brother never got an "official" baptism though, so it looks like my dad ultimately won that argument.

FWIW there is a translation of the Flagellum Daemonum sold by Weiser Press. Also of interest is Francis Young's "A History of Exorcism in Catholic Christianity" where he talks more about the development of exorcism rites. Though part of his main thesis, if I recall, was that for most of Medieval Europe deliverance from possession was focused on saints shrines. Liturgical exorcism beyond Baptism was a later development closer to the time of the books you're discussing.

Oh my, very interesting to hear about how exorcism took place... I'm a devinely guided exorcist..spirit releaser. I'm so happy my clients are not beaten. But they don't always know that I'm taking out dark force entities. It is a very soft approach that works in most cases.

Isn't a foundational principle seeking consent? Absent informed consent, you might be playing on the dark side

They come to me with a request for help. Even then I ask their higher self for consent. Is it playing on the dark side if I prevent telling certain people ( very il, old, frail or just closed off) that I take away an ugly demon ...is it playing on the dark side if we adapt the message so it becomes possible to help people, preventing worse.

I find this super interesting. I was attracted to magik as a younger man, but mainly because I wanted to understand if there was “anything “ after we die. Having found out there is, and evil is most definitely real, I became a Christian. However theses topics still intrigue me to this day, and as long as I’m not practicing I think it’s ok to research this stuff. Am I wrong? Right?

@@TheEsotericaChannel 💙😭💙Senpai noticed meee! I'm actually totally verklempt to hear that right now... and from you, no less! I just tried to join a facebook group for Jewitches, but they wouldn't let me join because I was raised with messianic Jews, despite not being one myself, and despite that this group publicly professes to embrace the "diversity of Jewish practises and faith" and intersectionality and syncretism, and that they accept members who are still in the process of conversion... only to have them privately tell me they're strictly anti-messianic, that those weren't even Real Jews at all, and that I need to go get more properly Jewish somewhere else before I can join their club. And this happened first thing in the morning on my birthday. There was lots of angry crying that day. Thank you for a much needed happy cry! 💜🔯💜 Solidarity! ✊

You mention the Exorcisms since Vatican II being in the Vernacular. In some cases maybe yes. But I have seen several recent prominent Exorcists talk about how much more effective that Latin is in the Rite. They even explain why that is. But as a result for the most part modern Exorcism in the Church is performed in Latin

@@TheEsotericaChannel Yes indeed. There was a dramatic shift to the Vernacular after the Council, which was utterly stupid an misguided. But it happened anyways. Then in 2000 they released a New and undated Ritual for Exorcism. The problem tho, was that it didn’t work! Some very experienced and prominent Exorcists including Fr. Gabriel Amorth, went to the Vatican to express their frustration over this. As a result there was an Indult issued giving Exorcists their own discretion as to which Ritual to use. I saw an interview with an Exorcist some time ago and he talked about it and said that as a result he and all of the other Exorcists he knew only used the Old Ritual and in Latin. Such is the “Spirit” of Vatican II and the dumbing down of everything like the Holy Mass. The so called Novus Ordo will some day maybe a century from now be abolished and banned. I’d say if anyone or anything ever needed an Exorcism it would be the Roman Curia. The Smoke of Satan is in the Church and the swirls about around the Altar of God…

Catholic here - Just found your channel. Love learning about Judaism as Jewish traditions are the foundation of my church. Yes, anyone can baptize anyone with whatever liquid you have at hand. The joke of baptism with milk is a thing. The purpose of understanding is that even a person at death can receive the cleaning of original sin. As baptism cleans away the original sin of man there is still a scar of the original sin until we die and go to purgatory when we are finally cleansed. That is why going to church weekly is important, as continual communion with God will help heal the scar. It is also why the baptismal fountain is found at the entrance of the church. Upon entering the church you dip your finger into the fountain and make the sign of the cross or paint the water in the shape of the cross on your forehead. It is like baptizing yourself weekly. This is why Catholics see getting baptized in other faiths as an acceptable first sacrament into the church. Also, why there were so many schisms in the church, on the debate of when to baptize a person, because as a baby you can not give consent. But earlier theologians preached that without baptism you can not enter the gates of heaven. Which is why infants were baptized and continue to be. The common belief now is that if you are an infant that is unbaptized then you won't go to hell because of that. Because of the mercy of God and Jesus' death which is the end all forgiveness of all sins. Which is very new within the Catholic church and some traditional clergy do not like it. As for the statement of marriage. Marriage is a sacrament. I have not heard that marriage can be performed outside the body of the church before. But I can see the argument that you don't need a church or priest to perform the sacrament. The rest of the sacraments require a priest to perform because of the laying of the hands which you can track historically from Jesus to Peter and then to the rest of holy clergymen. Baptism was made outside of Jesus and Jesus was Baptized by John the Baptist. Did not originate with Jesus. Same with Marriage, it did not originate with Jesus. So, the argument for the sacrament to not take place in the church can stand its ground. I just never heard of it. Same as the argument that it does not require a priest to get married. I just have never heard of a marriage accepted by the Catholic church that occurred outside the church and by a non-clergyman. For instance, I would be considered a bastard within my church because my parents got married outside of the church. But to society, I am not a bastard because they were legally married at the time when I was born. But at the same time, the church recognizes that my parents are married when we attend mass by referring to my mom with my dad's last name and though the mail.
