I would assume using the fine powder would be better, but I've found not all things work as you'd think so I figured I'd ask.. thanks for your time and help

Although I don't know if I'm mechanically inclined enough to build 1 even with your amazing detailed tutorial on it & the gauge. I know Caleb sells 1 but money is always an issue. Also I have red ceder 15-10 milled , I use as a start to BP. Would that be ok with a mix of 100m KNO2 and 15% Cookbooks air float? I'm trying to keep my milling to a minimum as these mills I can handle only handle a real 400g load. I do cheet them to 500g . 1 to 1 1/2 water as you said. Not oil.. ChazCo, Where did you get the load cell with the gauge on it ? Also what kind of spray lubricant do you use on the spindle and rams? I am hoping it is nearly odorless and clean (not like WD40 but maybe like silicone spray). Also, what is the formula you use for you black powder? Do you use Dextrose with the small amount of water? I enjoyed your tutorial immensely. Maybe I can finally get some performance out of my rockets.

Ned, on the Wolter Pyro Tools, the PDF on related to the Pressure Conversion Gauges list the required PSIs as 6500 PSI for Black Powder and 8800 PSI for Whistle. Now, I would think (probably incorrectly) that I would need at least a 3 to 4 ton press to achieve that pressure (6500/2000 = 3.25 tons). Does your arbor press create that much pressure? Or is there something in the math related to the smaller areas of rocket diameters that allows that type of pressure to get leveraged from, say, a 2 ton press? Hope my questions make sense.
@nedgorski
@nedgorski 9 жыл бұрын
HowellHudson Force applied by a press is different than the pounds-per-square-inches pressure (psi) that is applied to the propellant in a motor. The area of the hollow rammer, as compared with a solid one, also has to be taken into consideration. I hope that points you toward the math necessary to clear that all up. Also, making the BP propellant the way shown in the videos, and using shorter increments, necessitates only about 5000 psi on the comp, instead of Rich Wolter's 6500 recommendation. Good tubes can be pressed up to that pressure without being damaged. ned

Is using a delay mix and clay bulkhead beaded to prevent this from happening again? Please lmk

Quite a few compositions can be used as the delay, to create different effects, Danny. The same propellant can be used, dialing in the height of the delay to get the timing right. +Hakenhand Röhle , Magnesium? I don't use magnesium, typically, and have never done so in a rocket propellant. What would be the oxidizer in the mix you cite? ned
@roehle9962
@roehle9962 8 жыл бұрын
It doesnt need an Oxidizer. The sulfur reacts with the magnesium (magnesium sulfite). This mix would be flash powder without the oil and charcoal and the paper tube couldn't handle the pressure. So I decreased the burn rate by adding these two ingredients.

+Hakenhand Röhle , Interesting, Hak. I have no experience with such a mix, so would certainly recommend proceeding with great caution. Better safe than sorry. ned

Why don't you use a support sleeve?

It's simpler, and quicker, if not too much pressure is applied, or for too long.

2000 pounds on the scale? So that would be around 4000psi on the mix in the 20mm tube? Trying to replicate. Cheers from Switzerland
@nedgorski
@nedgorski 5 жыл бұрын
That's correct, Sven, if a solid rammer is being used. If a hollow rammer, I typically figure the area of the end of the rammer, and therefore the comp it is compressing, is about 0.75 x that of a solid rammer. So, if pressing with a hollow rammer the psi pressure would be more like 5333 psi. Best from the US.

It is a endburner rocket right?

@@nedgorski Oh ok. Is endburner too slow burning for this technique or does endburner work as well?

@@nicoeggert2527 End burners and core burners are quite different. I prefer end burners for drivers on girandolas, and use core burners as stand-alone rocket motors.

Yes, if the motor is small enough that the press can exert enough force to develop the desired pressure on the comp.

exactly this type of presentation I wish I had in my first days as a pyro some years ago, nice work #ned_gorski lovley to see that laws still are fine with hobby pyrotechnics in the US, do you think that this will last forever? ~ Jack
@nedgorski
@nedgorski 10 жыл бұрын
I don't think anything lasts "forever", Jack, and there are already plenty of locales in the US where it is illegal to make, possess, or shoot fireworks. As the population grows, and more and more regulations are found to be "necessary", individual creative liberties will fall by the wayside, unfortunately. We'd better enjoy what we can, while we can. ned
