Thank you so much for this! We spent a good chunk of change this spring getting a lot of large arborvitaes installed for an instant privacy hedge. Its now late October and my trees look just like this one, despite maintaining a regular watering schedule. The nursery did not warn me about this...i was panicking lol!

Thank you for explaining "needle drop" this makes a lot of sense now that I have them in my backyard. I was worried I was losing them, but they recovered nicely on their own.

This video eases my mind tremendously. I have 6 of these trees that were planted last August and did well through the first winter. This fall, however, I have noticed extensive browning of the needles of one of the trees and thought it was dying. My landscape guy suggested it could be needle purge, but I might want to spray with a fungicide. However, after watching this video I am content to leave the trees alone and hope they look better come next spring.

Is it normal for my 7" emerald green tree to turn yellow and drop about 40% of it needles between 2' - 5' in April? In some parts it almost bald.

No - that is not normal. Seasonal needle drop typically happen late summer or in the fall and would be the interior needles of the tree. Without knowing more of the specifics, your situation could be winter damage.

@@VanZeelandNurseryLandscape _ Thanks for your reply. The top 1 foot of the tree is 90% green with new growth. but the body lost about 30-40% of the needles. The winter was super mild this year with only a hand full of days below 32 and no snow (not normal weather). I don't see any bugs or fungus on the tree. It was green coming out of winter than we had a week of 50 degrees and it turn brown. Let me know if you can gather more from this. greatly appreciated.
