Amazing information David. I had mine in pots, only about 3 feet or so. But one of them was browning and they seem to require way more water in the pot. Ended them planting them in the ground and they seem much happier.

Thank you, it is great to hear you are finding our efforts helpful. David says he has been nicely surprised about how well his plant is doing in a pot, but really (as you've noted), these are plants that really excel when they are able to thrive out in the open ground. If they are going to be in the confines of a container, it is important to use one that is as large as possible, because more soil volume means less fluctuation in soil temperatures, and less watering and fertilizer needs etc. It is a testament to its rigor of this selection that your plant survived the browning and hopefully now will continue to flourish and thrive in its new home. Have you subscribed to our channel yet? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that will help other people find out about the information as well. And, now that we are in the midst of the BEST planting season (Fall) we try to encourage everyone to visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/. They are located all over our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, and that's where you will find all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, so be sure to stop in regularly throughout the seasons because there will be a steady stream of fresh shipments coming in weekly.

I can't remember if I'm the one who asked this question, but I do know it's a question I had/have and this is exactly the answer I needed. I also have the neighborhood explosion of deer.....herds of 7 or more passing through multiple times each day. So grateful to see this video pop up for me today. My landscaper is finalizing plans for planting my evergreens and this is a conversation we need to have. He's proposing Green Giant, and I'm worried they may get too large and we might better consider something smaller. Hmmm. Decision time!

Thank you for this excellent video. Truly grateful! One thing: I have read that arborvitae don’t do well with salt spray and yet you have your green giants a few feet from the road that I assume is salted in winter. Is that not a problem for them?

Thank you…you explained it so very well, I wish I can grow these junior giants arborvitaes as a back drop in my yard love the size of them and that it has one liter..but I live Louisiana zone 9.. I guess I’ll have to stick with emerald green arborvitae’s… can I remove one of the liter off the emerald green arborvitae like you did with junior giant? If so, can you please do a video demonstrating how to thank you…

Thank you, glad to hear our videos are proving helpful. We are (of course) outside of your region and therefore we would defer to the expertise of your local experts but it would be interesting for you to try at least one test plant of Junior Giant and see how it does. We know that when David is wondering about something, he will usually plant one trial plant, as a test and then watch it... and if it succeeds, then the chances are that others will do well too. The other thing to do is have a word with knowledge experts at your best local garden centers, they will be able to guide you with local, one the spot advice. Sine apparently Emerald Green is doing Ok, the junior Giants might be OK too. Regarding, your twin leader on the Emerald Green, the process for removal is the same as David demonstrates in the video. The only thing is that it frequently throws multiple leaders - so this is something you will probably have to keep an eye on and repeat as needed. Trees with multiple leaders are prone to splitting apart later in life - so it is good to try to keep a single dominant leader, if you can. Ultimately, they will be longer lived and better shaped. Finally, have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that helps other people find the information as well.

I bought some two years ago about 1-2 feet and haven’t seen much growth. I’m in zone 5. Any ideas? Not enough sun? Water them regularly and fertilize with a slow release granular in the spring.

That's a little strange, as you've no doubt noticed, our plants are growing beautifully! Fast, but not too fast!, if you know what we mean? Assuming you started out with well grown plants from a good reputable source, the only thing we can suggest, is that you check on the drainage (especially in late autumn, winter and early spring), Sometimes if there's poor drainage or a high water table, the roots will sit in saturated conditions and suffer damage under the ground. The surface may look OK, but underneath the ground is soggy, and they won't like that! If they are shady, and need more sunlight, they will often grow thin and lanky, or perhaps be one-sided. Root competition from other trees might be an issue too, this would be where the roots of any existing trees might be preventing growth. But, if that is likely, you would have discovered that at planting time. Sorry, we can't be of more help. If these suggestions don't seem relevant, then you might consider contacting your local extension office or employing the services of a knowledgeable master gardener or garden coach. They might be able to inspect the site and diagnose the issue. We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel yet? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post new videos (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. How dry is the soil? How much organic matter? Is it Mulched with 2-3 inches pine mulch? Consistent moisture? Or the opposite, is it in sitting water at ANY POINT IN THE YEAR? Too dry or Too Wet can stunt or kill a plant.

Why does your site say they get 8-10 feet wide when most other sites say junior giants only get 3-5 feet wide??
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 4 ай бұрын
It depends upon the stage that you measure it at - older or younger! (i.e. 12, 15' or 20") and whether the plants were trimmed or not! Also, since this is a relatively new selection, we suspect some of this might be what they believe is an estimated size. Finally, in our data points, we try to take a conservative approach, so that's why we would rather rather err on the side of caution. And since evergreens like this live longer, are better furnished at the base, and perform better when given wider spacings, we would rather provide guidance that encourages wider spacings. We hope this helps clarify things a little better. Have you subscribed to our channel?
