Twenty years ago today (June 1st, 2001), the final train traversed the Arbutus Corridor, ending 99 years of trains along this line.

Since the Arbutus rail line is so old, and all the way through in the cab ride we could see it had both electric/power-operated crossing signals and non-powered at some intersections, I'm curious at one time the electric ones came in and if the electric ones were all added around the same time or over some years. I would bet 60s or after the mid-50s. I worked for a while not that far from the Broadway crossing around 1990 and I remember hearing the sound of those horns practically non-stop through those crossings because there were so many intersections to cross within a short distance. Loved the sound of course, but a distant memory now . . . except for this kind of amazing youtube video.

Beautiful Nathan Airchime K3L horn, if this was 2020 they would not honk at any of those crossings! to bad people can't handle the noise of an approaching train, I personally love it.

amazing to see a freight train blasting its horn like crazy right through a city, what a shame the train line is gone.

why couldn't they put an F7 horn ?

The trains on Southern Railway south of the Fraser still have these horns. They have locomotives built in the 1950’s for BC Electric / BC Hydro Rail. Still in use to this day. They keep rebuilding them and a few old CP engines are there.

To think people, this was once part of the interurban railway.

I have the teardrop bell heard at 12:00! And not the same model, that exact one. They tore that crossing out and dumped the junk in a city compound leaving the bell to rot, so I saved and restored it back to the black it was painted in over 60 years ago when it was originally installed!

You can briefly see the old McDonald's in Kerrisdale before crossing 41st. It had a smoking section and a windowed conveyer belt from the kitchen to the drive through. At 49th you can see where the Ingram's grocery store was. A small convenience store in the same strip used to sell candy, comic books, small toys and baseball cards.

I always sat on the side of that McDonalds in the 90’s to see things going over that belt.

I would hear this from Dunbar and 20th. I moved from there just before they ceased operations and now it’s the Southern rail trains SRY. Something is missing if I don’t hear a train on a regular basis.

Nice. To say Vancouver has changed a bit is an understatement. Did it end right at Arbutus, or go out further towards Kitsilano?
