I have metal shavings in my first 3 oil changes while breaking it in. Would the bearing or rod be rubbing on the lip of the crank? Should I pull the piston and check the bearings?
@christophermcmahon79202 жыл бұрын
.003 oil clearence. Piston walls still look like new. Took off a bit of crank to make cam clearence with a cut side cover to be able to see. .265 cam Plenty of piston to head and piston to valve clearance wiseco stock bore piston. Am I overly worried or....... Is this normal when breaking in a newly built motor?

to polish journal , can 1000 to 1200 wet and dry paper be used? I've used it on automotive cranks before. wrapped it around a oily crank, then i wrapped a leather shoe string 3-4 times around it. work back and forth a few times then check the crank. is this acceptable on small engines?
@arcracing76377 жыл бұрын
That would work fine. Just go slow as to not polish the journal too small. Polish, then check, polish, then check.
@MrBob58o7 жыл бұрын
600 grit wet sanding OK for the crank journal? My Hemi journal measured nice and round 1.188", but plastiguage showed 0.002"oil clearance, which was the minimum per the instructions (0.0005" less than target range of 0.0025" - 0.0030"). I think I should hit max RPM around 7000 - 7500 with my set up, but should mostly be around 5-6k. NR285-0211, 37lb springs, Big Valve (28.5/25) Ported Milled Hemi Head, 11:1 CR on Minibike with 13" Tires geared 5:1 with Torque Converter
@arcracing76377 жыл бұрын
Probably your best bet would be to take the assembly to machine shop and have the crank polished. while its at the machine shop have them double check the measurements. It might take a little bit of experience to hand sand one to size.

Does the connecting rod come with it's inside clearances labeled? If so most people can find access to a regular micrometer making this much easier for the installer that does not have an inside micrometer...

I noticed when torquing the bolts I would go in 20 inch pound increments up to 160 and then take the last 10 and on that last increment from 160 to 170 sometimes the bolt wouldnt turn any further. it would just click the wrench. Kind of made me wonder whether i really had them fully torqued. Also, how many times can those bolts be reused before replacing. I had mine apart a few times due to learning the hard way with the plastigage. if only i had seen this video sooner.
@arcracing76378 жыл бұрын
+Fred Geitner What kind of torque wrench do you have, how old is it? The bolts can be properly torqued 4-5 times. It would be best to measure the bolt before you install it and again after it is torqued to see how much stretch as occurred.
@fredgeitner7138 жыл бұрын
I have the 1/4" drive torque wrench from Harbor Freight. I also have a beam type which i checked it up against and it seemed to read accurate. Yes this is my first small engine build. When i saw this video i saw some things you did that would have saved me alot of trouble if i had done that way. I could have easily miked the bolts but i didnt think to.

150 with molly lube, 170 with oil. we prefer the oil you use to assumable and break the engine in with.

depends on if the crank is too big or too small. Too big polish the journal down to size, too small new crank shaft.

unsure why you torque to 170 in lb when spec is 150?
@arcracing76376 жыл бұрын
The spec is 150 inch/lbs with Moly Lube and 170 inch/lbs with regular oil. Most Average Joe's will use regular oil so we put the specs for each in the instructions that come with the rod. That way they can chose which they prefer to use.

Do Rod bearings and rod bolts come with the vanguard 6276 rod?
@arcracing76377 жыл бұрын
YES
@mrmikemanify7 жыл бұрын
Do you have to torque down the rod caps on the crank the first time to seat the bearings? I have micrometers and a bore gauge at my disposal. Being that you can only tighten and untighten these rods 5 times, I would have to first tighten them on the crank to seat the bearings, untighten them and retighten them in a vice with the bearing in it to measure the bearing oil clearance, and then untighten and retighten one last time to install in the engine. That would only leave me 2 more times that I could unscrew and re torque the rods before replacement correct?
@arcracing76377 жыл бұрын
You can seat the bearings in a vice without using the crank. When you tighten the bolts for the first time it seats the bearing.

You should torque your bolts in two stages, not every 20 inch pounds.You're not applying enough force to break friction and can get false readings. Notice how it clicked at 100 inch pounds even though it was only torqued to 80?
@arcracing76376 жыл бұрын
The reason for the muilti step process is to seat the bearing properly. The bearing and the rod are shaped slightly different and the bearing needs to be forced fit into the rod. In some cases slower and steady are better.
@ImPrather8 жыл бұрын
I disagree with lubing all bolts before torquing them. a bolt with lube should be torqued to a different specification than to one that is not lubed. it is up to manufacture discrepancy as to whether the bolt is lubed when torquing it down. most manufactures say to torque it dry.
@user-neo716658 жыл бұрын
You do understand they are the manufacture of the rod. They say do it lubed I'm pretty sure they have the lubed specs listed in the paper work they printed and included.
@kylegoldston6 жыл бұрын
You don't want to or be super careful with fasteners in blind holes. Lube can get trapped in the hole and cause hydraulic resistance. I think sometimes it's easier to teach people to torque dry.
