Went for a 8mi snowshoe trip just yesterday with my proton . About 1800' gain. It was around 17°f, and for the most part, it was perfect with an alpaca base on. It was pretty blue bird so had to unzip all the way to breathe as I did start to sweat about the treeline with no wind.

I have all the protons from the 1st gen. The old Proton LT uses Coreloft Continuous, which is the only reason I haven’t upgraded. For some reason Arc’ changed the insulation to the new model. Continuous is seen as a more premium insulation. Not sure how much it would matter in moderate use cases, as compressibility takes some hit. The overall durability may be better in the old jacket though. Proton FL & Lightweight may be the most revered jacket of all time by the users. The one with thickest insulation (AR & Heavyweight) uses Continuous insulation in both old and new versions of the jacket.

Wouldn't you be better off with a wind shirt and grid fleece for 99% of the stuff you described in the video? The Proton and its sibling jacket the Atom, are way too hot for active use unless its really cold, like below freezing, and at that point they aren't warm enough for static use, so you end up needing a layering system anyway. So why bother? If you do a lot of climbing get a Techface or softshell, its way more durable then "Fortius 20". If you want a breathable mid, a Patagonia R1 will be about 8x as breathable as either the Proton or Atom. And if you need wind protection, get a windbreaker. You can get an Alpha 90 fleece and a wind jacket like the Houdini for half the price and weight of a Proton. But yeah, marketing and such...

I got them from Amazon, the brand is called Ushare Outdoor... I don't think they are available anymore, but I am pretty sure they are a cheaper version of Revolution Race pants.

Amen brother, Jesus Saves! Glad this review was helpful. I only ever had a chance to try one GTX hardshell jacket and that's the one I have now from Sweet Protection, I think Apex it is called. So far its been great, been skiing today in 10F comfortably. I will make a review for it!
