why do people, especially the guys at GB, hate terms like SHMUP or Metroidvania? they seem like decent enough shorthand for genres.

Those terms can over generalize a really unique game and it's kinda reductive.

Hamster >>> the majority of Western companies dealing with ports of older games; the latter just chucks in games, no matter if it's actually playable with a standard controller or have graphics and audio issues, just to give you more of a bang for your buck. Dedicated classic game companies like M2 and Hamster actually care for the purity of the ports and don't rush it, while keeping the functionality of the games in mind; pricey, but you do get what you pay for as the ports are damn near perfect.
