Miyamoto and his crew loved the Popeye cartoons. And they wanted to make a game based on that series, but didn't have the money to do so. All that changed after "Donkey Kong" became a huge hit.

And then they got sued! Yeah great times.
@SpearM30646 жыл бұрын
The Donkey Kong lawsuit was, in my opinion, one of the most spectacular examples of a movie studio being put in its place. The TL;DR version is that Universal Studios argued that King Kong was *not* in the public domain and that Donkey Kong was therefore in violation of their copyright; but the judge pointed out that Universal had argued in a previous lawsuit that it *was* in the public domain. "You can't have it both ways. Judgement in favor of Nintendo."
@theodorehsu50234 жыл бұрын
@@zobergwallace2492 The first time, King Features thought video games were a fad. It was only until "Donkey Kong" and "Donkey Kong Jr." did great that they changed their minds. And Nintendo did Popeye justice. Which then led to Parker Brothers getting the rights to convert the game to home consoles, too.

The voice of Bluto was supplied by the late Jackson Beck during the Famous and King Features eras and by the late Allan Melvin during the Hanna-Barbera era. The role of Bluto was played by Paul L. Smith for the 1980 film.

@@ivanjursdotter I dunno seeing characters smoke in movies never gave me the urge to smoke as a kid. Especially, cause most smoker characters like Cyril Sneer, (The Raccoons) or Carface, (All Dogs Go to Heaven) were fugly. And the tattoo thing is odd, because lots of kid cartoons feature tattooed characters. Like "Total Drama," or Ninja Turtles.

The Popeye arcade game is based on the following: 1. The beloved comic strip created by E.C. Segar. 2. The Max & Dave Fleischer cartoons from the 1930s to the 1940s. 3. The Famous Studios cartoons from the 1940s to 1967 (the Popeye Famous era title card is shown here in the game's attract mode and again when you beat the game). 4. The Hanna-Barbera cartoon series from 1978-81. 5. The 1980 movie starring the late Robin Williams. Popeye's theme song was "I'm Popeye the Sailor Man," composed by Sammy Lerner and arranged by Sammy Timberg (Fleischer era), Winston Sharples (Famous era), Hoyt Curtin (Hanna-Barbera era) and Tom Pierson (1980 film). Which Popeye animated era do you like better?
