I played this game both the arcade and nes port. Fun game. The Aracde is slightly faster but the NES does a great job porting this game. I'd personally play either. Great comparison.

Thanks buddy! I totally agree with your assessment. I'd pick the arcade as the winner but the NES port is also very well done.
I find it really impressive that the NES managed to copy some of the arcade's more impressive graphical tricks -- thinking particularly about the layers of parallax scrolling and the bullets leaving a splash in the water where they land. The arcade clearly is superior from an objective standpoint, but this is the kind of NES game that would have blown kids' minds back in 1986 when gamers were used to compromised Atari 2600 ports that looked at least 2 console generations behind. More impressive NES games several years after like "Silkworm" do make me think later programmers could have made this nearly arcade-perfect, but hey, sometimes you have to strike while the iron is hot and with what you currently know.

As per usual I couldn't agree more. The arcade is definitely the way to go these days where you can access any port easily but this is very impressive on the NES. Kids were first starting to get the NES in '86 and had they been playing the 2600 or Intellivision and picking this up as one of their first games it must have been like when I saw Sonic for the first time after previously seeing the first Zelda and Double Dragon as the most advanced home graphics. I'm always fascinated by the idea of games like this ported near the end of the console's lifespan rather than early on as a what-if scenario. If this came out in like 1991 where there was so much more knowledge about the console but before 100% of the focus was on the SNES I do wonder how close they could have gotten this to the arcade.

I love this game! I discovered the franchise on SNES with the III game.

This is such an awesome game. It's also one of those rarities where it was a computer game first which got home releases later, then was remade as an arcade game and got home releases of the arcade version.

Not bad conversion for nes. Arcade very fun game!

I agree, they did a great job porting this one though personally I prefer the arcade version.

If it bleeds we can beat this game.

Obvious win for the arcade original in every field. NES port looks and sounds just awful. Also, what a cool 3D effect in the original with that lower part of the screen. I really like what they were able to do with only 2D-sprites and a tone of paralax scrolling)) P.S. And you know what? Today is my birthday^^)

Happy birthday my friend!! I hope you're having an awesome day:) For this game the arcade version is fantastic and while I haven't really played a bad version of this game I think I'd go with the arcade at #1, Master System #2 and NES #3. Enjoy the rest of your day. I hope you got some great stuff!

@@RetroComparisons About some great stuff: actually, I did! Some friends gave me presents on Steam: - wallet card with 800₴ inside (it's almost 20$) - Lego Batman: The Game - Alice: Madness Returns - Resident Evil 2 (the remake one) P.S. Wait, there was the SMS port? Should we wait for the video comparison somewhere later down the line then?^^)

Renting the NES port of Choplifter was the first time I played the game. I only rented it I think, twice, maybe 3 times, and I've only played it a few times later on via emulation and the everdrive. I enjoyed the NES port, but I find it more frustrating compared to the other versions I've played, including Sega's really nice port to the arcade here, the very nice SMS port of that version, and the decent but not quite as nice Colecovision and 7800 ports. The arcade version is by far the winner here vs the NES, and the NES version could have been better, but I definitely fell in love with Choplifter because of renting this okay-but-annoying NES version.

This is an excellent port and yet I agree that the arcade & SMS port surpass it. I think it's just me sucking at this game but I find every version to be frustrating yet I get addicted to it every time I get footage for a different console. It's the mark of a difficult but fun game as opposed to those ones where you play it for 5 minutes and never come back to it ever again.

This Is Really Good For NES Graphics: Great Presentación: Good Music And Sound: Ok Gameplay: Impresively Smooth Really Good But One Red Flag The SMS Beat Him, And Got The "Crown"...

Yeah the NES version is great as is the SMS version. This is one where you can't go wrong with the 3rd gen console versions of this game. Even the 7800 was pretty good (though not as good as the 2 previously mentioned).
