I agree so much. I can never stop listening to it, sometimes even 5 times on repeat. It just flows so amazingly, and the atmosphere, sound, everything, it's just so perfect, every damn song, every detail. I don't wanna sound like a dick and I feel terrible saying so bc i LOVE DD, but sometimes I catch myself thinking that "So Red The Rose" is even better than most albums DD released, bc they just don't flow the way this one does. And it has so much more depth, I don't know how to explain. I just wish they'd have released at least 1-2 more albums with Arcadia, but well, I won't complain bc I'm super grateful they made this at all.
@DCXpander7 жыл бұрын
Sad as it may be, another So Red The Rose would not have happened as producer Alex Sedakin died in a car crash afterwards while he was in progress with the Thompson Twins project that included his version of "Lay Your Hands On Me"--the Twins were another band which had very flowing sounds--Quick Step & a Side Kick then Into The Gap (the ending of that album was sublime. Alex was an incredible hand for both bands.

The Arcadia project was a brilliant piece of work--the best Duran album never made by the band. A quirky piece of art in both the music and the album's artwork--comes close to a Rio cover as any does. If John and Andy Taylor let themselves be a part of the project along with Grace Jones, David Gilmore, and Sting plus many more of great contributors--the album would have been way ahead of the time considering how many artists now appear on songs (adding nothing near to this). With Arcadia so much was added with the collaborations, like Sting on "The Promise"---his voice harmonized with Simon's perfectly. So Red The Rose is the perfect fit between Seven and the Ragged Tiger and Notorious. In fact, I believe that "A View To A Kill" owes much to Arcadia's sound more than just adding John's brilliant bass and Andy's gifted guitar work to it. "A View To A Kill" is the most popular of the Bond themes and the most successful. Think of "Election Day" with Andy's rhythm guitar and John Taylor working with Sting on the bass. Sadly this was one of producer Alex Sadkin's (who also helmed Seven and the Ragged Tiger) last projects before his fatal accident--his last production gig was with Thompson Twins "Lay Your Hands On Me" the original UK single version. Funny that Duran worked with Nile Rodgers on "A View To A Kill" and the album Notorious and also worked with TT on the album Here's To Future Days which was to be a Sadkin production. Take the b-side to "Union Of The Snake", "Secret Oktober" as an omen to So Red The Rose---only Simon picked out a piece of poetry from his notebook, then Nick and he worked it out with Alex as the rest of the band had left Australia and the label wanted a non-album b-side. "Secret Oktober" is one of my favorite Duran b-side of all time.

Grace Jones is still one of the Greatest Music Icons of all time. In 1978 she invited Bernard Edwards & Nile Rogers of Chic as her special Guests at Studio 54 and they weren't allowed in. They were so angry they went home and wrote a "F@ck You!" type of song which of course would later be Le Freak. In later years Nile Rogers would later work with Duran Duran after Andy Taylor & Roger Taylor left. In the UK his music still resonates. On Popstars 2 The Rivals The Female Contestants sang We Are Family, Steps a Co-Ed Group did Everybody Dance, as did Kimberely Walsh of Girls Aloud.

You can lay the blame on the labels and timing. Red Carpet Massacre was just that a Timbaland and Timberlake take over--it had some of Duran's best tracks "Nite Runner" and "Skin Divers" being sweated on by Timbaland. Same can be said of Timbaland's work on Madonna's Hard Candy--some great tracks over produced with exception of "4 Minutes". The original demo of "Candy Shop" surpassed what was released. Labels no no art these days... Now on Paper Gods, the work they did with Mr. Hudson (see this page: www.discogs.com/Duran-Duran-Paper-Gods/release/7455757 and the tracks where Mr. Hudson was either the co-producer with Duran or added production (on "What Are The Chances")). Mr. Hudson got the boys sound back. Again the lead single of "Pressure Off" was a bit too many chefs in the mix. "What Are The Chances" and "You Kill Me Silence" were come back to The Wedding Album success material. Some of the other more moody tracks come close to echoing Arcadia a bit like "Only In Dreams", "The Universe Alone", "Planet's Roaring" and suburb "Northern Lights" (a true return to the sound of the first Duran album).
@t.l.knight80056 жыл бұрын

Those tapering rounded columns were used in the movie LEGEND which was filmed in 1985 and released in 1986. We are ALL animals, My Lady.

I love this era and this song. The video is beautifully pretentious nonsense and the music is too. I love this era so much. Thank You Arcadia.

I've always liked this spin-off better than the original Duran Duran. Much more creative!!!

Always loved this version. So art school, pretentious and theatrical - it's awesome. So Red The Rose 🌹

The older second table lady, Young girl at the end, including the wall hidden elderly man and "Grace Jones" complimented this video smack dab in the 80s YEAH 1985 DuranDuran/Arcadia

"Maybe we have more playtime than money" I always loved that line & it suited me then as it does right now.

One of the best albums of the 80's, period! There are so many layers to 'So Red the Rose' - it was way ahead of it's time. Even though it sounds so much like it came from the 80's, there's so much going on in the music. Completely underrated and deserves much more credit than any Duran album (no offense meant).
