I was never a fan of Honky Tonk Man's Elvis impersonator gimmick, but I loved him on the mic, loved him as a heel AND a face, and he tells great stories. I could listen to him shoot for not hours, but DAYS. Underrated performer, and he seems like a really cool guy in person.

Honky was a tremendous heater back in the 80's, and I appreciate that he's dedicated his life to the business. And he seems like a cool guy. But he blames everyone under the sun for not staying on top. It was the fact that fans lost momentum for the gimmick, and he ceased to draw heat. Fans didn't want to see him get beat up, they just wanted him not to be there. I still remember his last Wrestlemania during his big run. He and Valentine came out in a pink caddy (Driven by DDP) with a huge entrance, did his song which I'm sure was supposed to whip fans into some sort of a frenzy of heat, and there was zero reaction to it. No 'heat'. A burning indifference. Like 'Welp, time for a piss' indifference. It was brutal. Then the Bushwackers attacked them, and the transition to that was so awful that the fans didn't respond at all 'Wait...they're not vendors! That's LUKE...and....BUTCH....the BUSHWACKERS!!!'. When you are a heater, you take up that much time in that big of an event, and the fans wish both the faces and heels would get the hell out of the ring and for the segment to be over with, your gimmick has run it's course. Like it's 30 years later, and HTM still hasn't gotten the memo those WM fans sent him that year. He's still blaming Ric Flair, or whatever, in his 10,000th shoot interview.
