Okay, after 6 episodes I have to write this... While most reaction-based content creators cut their analysis increasingly short at the END of their videos due to the algorithm showing they aren't rewarded for it, here we have a creator bold enough to START their videos with a very lengthy recap and analysis. Typically, far from rewarding the creator, this would punish them by losing audience; however, I sincerely hope that the extremely high quality of commentary and analysis provided here has bucked that trend and rewards our funnylilgal because... well damn, she deserves it. =)

Then, Jayce tells Viktor to do what he needs to do, and Jayce said, "I need to get ready." (and you even said during your reaction, "Get ready for what?")... he had to get ready to "go to war" to fight for Viktor's life by keeping Heimerdinger from lobbying the Council to destroy the Hexcore. Jayce was just protecting the life of his friend... ("He's like my brother.") And he was so frustrated talking to Mel at the beginning because there was nothing he could do to help Viktor... THIS was the thing he could do to help Viktor, so he did it!

I don’t really agree with that theory, especially since she still carried the flare with her, I think she would have lit the flare before getting tattoos of it. For better or for worse it was the point in her life and turning point where she became who she is today-One of her inventions finally worked, and it was a brilliant blue explosion. There was some unfortunate consequences of that explosion, but from that point on that explosion ultimately defined who she is today.

Jinx is a genius, but of another kind. She isn't a scientist (theory make her very bothered), but an engineer (specialized on destruction). If she noticed that X do Y consistently, she doesn't need to know why, she understands, adapt and used it. She study the necessary to make things work and ignore all the rest. One thing I like to do in this episode (because the flare scene at the end is rather hard hitting) is focusing on the wholesome parts: * Caitlyn looking out for Vi, who doesn't want to be cared for. * Caitlyn offering her gun, her only protection (!) in an environment whose rules she does not understand (!!), which is her prized posession and almost part of herself (!!!) in exchange for a chance of healing Vi, who she basically just met. Because Vi has proven to her that she can keep the both of them safe. * Also, that almost-kiss-scene? Go frame-by-frame. Vi looks at Caitlyn's lips once, while Caitlyn does so twice before it becomes too much for her and she has to turn away. Goes down like hot chocolate in winter. * And finally, I really, really like the way Vi handled her sister when meeting. Even if they where interrupted, this was good for both of them. * Also, I did like it when Jayce opened up to Mel about Victor, and you could see her perception of him changing. I wasn't a massive fan of their interaction last episode, because it came out of nowhere, but from this point on, I was ok with them. Arcane has a lot of drama, but at least, it defuses it a bit with the odd joke ("Maybe we got off on the wrong arm.") or good wholesome scenes, I give them that.

I really liked your reactions before, and I was really excited for you to watch Arcane before you started, but your reactions to Arcane have slowly become my favorite of anyone. I can't stop watching people react to this series and you've been adding so much to the experience. As for this episode, I really think Silco may be my favorite vilian of all time. A lot of shows and movies will take that type of cold, calculating villain and only ever portray them as exactly that, but this show isn't afraid to show Silco as being just vulnerable and fallible enough to add interesting layers to him without doing it so much he stops being scary. Giving us that moment of him finding out Vi was back so we could see how he reacted, and his reaction being all about how it would affect his relationship with Jinx is a great example, or in this episode how unhinged he got when Vi escaped because he knew it would only be a matter of time before she found Jinx. There's obviously a lot more to come with him and I can't wait to see how you feel about him going forward.
@blackshard6418 ай бұрын
Silco is my favorite too. On the subject of who do you root for, one of the things the writers have said was their goal in the series was to present impossible choices. You can REALLY see that come to a head at the end of the show (which you've obviously seen since this video is a year old), but there are so many other times. I think the secret is having every character have qualities you like and qualities you don't, and constantly having them swing back and forth between failure due to their flaws, and successes due to their strengths. Vi is brave and strong, but she's brazen and reckless. Jayce is a charismatic man of action, but he's easily manipulated and has trouble seeing the forest for the trees. Silco is brilliantly manipulative, but he's deeply lonely and codependent. By seeing these different parts of the characters, we learn to understand them almost like real people, and we gradually come to care about just about all of them. And that's when the show hits us with a "would you rather?" and we're left reeling from the sucker punch. It's such magnificent writing all around.

my personal understanding of jinx is that she's always been an excellent inventor, and she has been improving ever since she was a kid. throughout the show people repeatedly are impressed at the quality of her creations, and while they didnt usually work as a kid, you could tell she had started at it from a very young age. i interpreted her 'heebie jeebies' lines not as her being clueless about it at all, but rather that she wasn't taught in a formal academy and doesnt know proper terms and stuff. plus she has her own style of scrap inventions, paired with her mental state where she just talks about things in weird unexpected ways and has a mannerism of 'blah blah blah' style mocking other people, especially those in higher standing than her like silco talking about his history with vander, or people from piltover in general.
@th3voice2 жыл бұрын
"Maybe Jinx is a genius?" Yes. She very much is. The thing about mental health is that even if we, from our modern western perspectives, have thoughts about how to preserve and promote mental health, Arcane and the world of Runeterra(?) does seem to be mostly stuck in a "mental health" paradigm from the 1800s, if even that. Silco's advice to "put it behind you and let it stay in the past where it can't hurt you" is a fairly sophisticated for this world, I think. I've not seen a single suggestion that psychology and psychiatry are fields that exist in either Zaun or Piltover.

From one of the creators of the show, he gave a top down list of the most intelligent characters by revealing their IQ level in Arcane. Jinx was at the top. However, they did not give an IQ number for Jinx like the rest. Next to Jinx's name was "God". So, there are many different religions or spiritualities in Runeterra. In real life, those were what people had instead of an actual mental health practice. Which is quite realistic given that for most of human history, everyone pretty much lived crappy lives. Zaun and Piltover are dystopian societies and being well adjusted to a dystopian society is not a good measure for mental health. And as a bonus, for those that know the lore, in Jaycee's room in the first episode, there is a poster of Jana who is a goddess that saved Zaun a 1000 years before the events of the show and there are people that worship her. All though Jaycee is shown to be from the Freljord in the first episode and they have different beliefs as well.

This show is so good at creating tension by using set-up and pay-offs in a creative way: they subvert expectations by showing a set-up that seems to imply one thing, but then avoid the set up that we expect, and instead give us a way more emotional pay-off that still makes sense. - We know that Mel is manipulative and Jayce trusts her. We expect her to take advantage of Jayce, but instead Jayce learns to be manipulative as well, and he basically figures out how to fire his boss to protect Viktors invention. - We know that Silco is an evil, twisted villain who would absolutely hurt a child to achieve his goals, but instead in a moment of weakness he actually decides to raise a child he could empathize with. - We know that Vi and Powder/Jinx have ONE chance to reunite and that's the flare. We expect it to be used in the finale, but it's actually right before all hell breaks loose. We expect that Vi misses her one chance to see the flare but instead she sees it. We expect that Vi misses her chance to meet Jinx, but instead she arrives just in time. And then the second we half-trust that maybe this meeting will actually be a productive reunion, Caitlynn and the Firelights interfere.

From everything we’ve seen up to this episode, shimmer seems like the concept of a health potion from video games but with our understanding of modern medicine. At correct doses it can be used for healing. It also seems to have some addictive and euphoric properties and we’ve seen people inhaling it as a recreational drug at the last drop. Then in excessive doses it can transform and enhance the user’s body, but with heavy costs and side effects. This episode shows how prolonged or repeated abuse seems to seriously damage the body. I see a lot of parallels between shimmer and controlled substances like opiates and amphetamine. The right dose and application it can be beneficial, but it has tendencies for abuse with serious consequences.

I think they built up Jinx's tech savvy quite well, she's the undersider most familiar with the crystals, was the one to ask what was valuable enough to steal from Jayce's lab in the first episode and she fixed the firing range in episode 2, probably maintained Vi's punching machine too. Silco is an excellent character, one of the best antagonistic (don't think villain quite suits him). He's very Machiavellian in his approach, doesn't seem to enjoy the methods he chooses but is also not put off by them, he doesn't necessarily want to do a lot of these things but he does see them as the most effective way he can achieve his goal of the independence of Zaun.

The thing with the bartender was he said that Silco wanted them to grab girls. Then he realized how bad it sounded to say he was going around grabbing girls, so he clarified that he was only grabbing the two specific girls that Silco wanted. I think Mel went into this solely with the intent to manipulate Jayce. I think it only became real for her when he came to her after Viktor's diagnosis. You could see the change come over her when he rested his head in her lap. It was like, "Oh, there's something to this."

I think the characters - specifically Mel and Jayce act accordingly to who they are. Mel comes from a ruling class that took what they wanted. From a young age she lived in a political and gruesome world. She always striked me as exactly that - she has good intentions, she just implores alle the skills she could develop as a member of the ruling faction; molding and influencing people to do what she deems right. Her feelings for Jayce felt always geniune - yet propably something she did not expect, specifically in this fashon and how Jayces role in it is playing out. For Jayce its the other way around - he is desperatly looking for direction and validation to make sure he does not make a mistake and oes the right thing. In a sense they are the perfect couple. Both are at the core good I would say and one brings the necessary ambition while the other keeps them in a natural way in check.

Commenting way late on this, but I've always LOVED the re-design of Vi in this series. In the video game, she's very clearly designed for the male gaze. This show makes her insanely attractive by toning that back a lot and making her look like a person. An insanely attractive badass person, but a person that could exist for herself.

I also loved SIlco. He's a fantastically written, complex, deeply human, and sympathetic villain. It's a type of character I love but so rarely see in media.

The whole show is about duality. Vi/jinx Vander/Silco Piltover/Zaun Hextech/shimmer Rich/poor Its very much Jin & Yang. No one is truly a hero, all the good guys has darkness to them. No one is an out right Villain, all the bad guys has some light to them.

I don't think Viktor worrying about his legacy is necessarily about others remembering him as a person. Viktor doesn't want to talk in front of a lot of people and also isn't upset about Jayce being the face of Hextech. Viktor doesn't want to be remembered as a person, but he wants to be remembered for his inventions. He can't bear the thought of dying before inventing something that meaningfully improves the lives of everyone in Zaun. He doesn't care if people forget who he was, as long as his inventions continue to improve lives, his legacy will life on.

Oh, the misery.... yes the opening song was chosen carefully. Thank you for your beautiful reaction and your deep commentary, as well as slices of your personal trauma. I can assure you that you arent the only one getting totally invested in this show and story and characters. It really seems to have some kind of wicked sorcery inside, that sucks people in and opens bags of emotions that werent supposed to be there in the first place. Ive watched it about 4 times in full since release and ive watched it being reacted to about 30+ times as well (watching reactions gives me for very short moments the feeling of experiencing it for the first time again and now im stuck i guess x_x), you are one of my most enjoyed reactors because of your beautiful soul and honesty. Yes, the dark cave guy is singed and he survived powders' explosion and looks a bit crispy now, but it is him. There is a beautiful little scene in this episode, when Jinx approaches Chuck/Thieram. Look at her cup and the way he gives it to her. If you rewatch the end of episode 2 you will notice that it is exactly the same cup and the same way Vander poured her drinks. Thinking about how she taught Chuck to do this (and to remember her time with Vander) somewhere during the skipped years makes me smile :) Keep doing what you do and know, you are spreading a bit of happyness :)

Jinx is a genius, they don't mention it in the show but in the game she engineered both the bombs she uses as well as the machine gun you saw her use. Notice how almost no one else has fully automatic weapons save Jinx in the show. It is implied that she as intelligent as Jayce, although I don't think she is as smart as Victor. Also being the only daughter to the king pin of the underworld ( aka the richest man there) means that she probably had the best education that money could buy down there.

I love the line, "Perhaps we got off on the wrong arm. " As it was Jinx as a child, in top of killing her adopted family, destroyed Sevika's arm that night she set off her bomb. Subtitles help with names, at some point it denotes that Singed is talking, as in the show no one actually says his name, he's only referred to as the doctor. But to settle your mind, yes, but knowing you are ahead if not already finished you most likely know this already

I spent several years having really confusing nightmares about my mother coming back and refusing to explain how she was alive when she's supposed to be dead. I call them nightmares because , in them, she used to berate me for the decisions I've made since she died. This episode reminds me of the feeling I used to wake up with after one of those dreams. "Everyone who's ever lost someone... there's these little fantasies you have about seeing them again." This... I relate to this. So... I lost the love of my life abruptly in 2016. She was only 32. And I've had the exact dream about her you're talking about so many times, where she's somehow not really gone, and I see her again and we get to talk to each other. And then I realize it isn't possible... so I ask her, "this isn't real, is it" And she replies, "no, I'm sorry but it isn't real." And I tell her thank you for spending time with me anyway. I never got to tell her goodbye in real life. I never got to marry her, and I was finally at a place in my life where I knew that's what I wanted. But I got to tell her in my dreams. Sometimes that's the only consolation we get. But it's something.

I'm totally obsessed with this show in a way that I've never been obsessed with anything other show in my life. This is because I find several of the characters in the show deeply impactful to some of the events that happened in my own life. My favorite character is Silco and Viktor for two unfortunate reasons without giving any spoilers. 1. Upto this point Silco's worldview used to very much mirror my own. That power comes to those who do anything, that you don't get what you deserve but what you can take, that betrayal is imminent even in the closest ones we love, and that the ends justify the means. I know how I got to this worldview, I've been discarded as useless, bullied for being physically frail in my youth, told I was less than others for being poor, and betrayed by people I once called brother. BUT, this is a highly toxic worldview and I've been choosing to live my life in a way that is contrary to this worldview but it takes work! 2. To Viktor's point, I got ulcertive colitus at the age of 19 while pursuing my 2nd year of a Bachleor of Science, major in Computer Science with a focus in machine learning and algorithms. I grew up very poor so going to school took all my resources and then some I didn't have, I was going into debt but at least I was a dean's list student. I spent 3 years struggling with the disease until at 22 it became full blown colon cancer. I had nothing left to draw on, I was an honors graduate in computer science but I couldn't work. The cancer flared up and in 3 weeks I dropped from a skinny 150 lbs to 102 lbs, I'm 6'2" in height, I couldn't walk without support or a cane and you could count the individual vertebrae on my spine. I was dying with little to no hope, and I likely would have died if I had lived in a country that deemed me too poor to be worth saving. But those around me rallied to my aid and through the wonders of medical science and human love I was saved from an early withering death. I'm now 33, healthy, financially secure, productive and happily married. All because of people in the real world with motives like Viktor and Jayce who just want to help those in need. I am not Viktor in terms of brains or grit, but I understand his predicament all too well and I feel the same passion as he does for "adaptive matrices". I wish you all the best in your own journey through Arcane, to find a way to heal your traumas and to live a better life. I'll leave you with two quotes that really resonated with me: "Why does tragedy exist? Because you are full of rage. Why are you full of rage? Because you are full of grief" "If you never heal from what hurt you, you'll bleed on people who didn't cut you"

In regards to Viktor falling in with Singed (the scientist with Rio) it shouldn't be thought of as creepy in context. The whole of the underground is pretty much presented as a found family and the show focuses so much on what "parentage" and specifically fatherhood really means. Vander adopted those children =/= creepy Singed adopts Viktor =/= creepy If not for Singed's tutelage it's likely Viktor never would have developed enough to become an academy student. I actually really love the line "Let's be loners together." It's such a smart way of being welcoming to Viktor and saying he can belong here while not disregarding the fact that very smart people often feel alone.

Personally I believe Shimmer comes from Rio, not the plants they feed him with. Not sure if there has been any confirmation on any of it one way or the other yet. But I would think that Singed's obsession with "the mutation must survive" is because it is a unique creature that is used to create the Shimmer substance. He didn't seem to care about the plants dumped on the ground and walked on but you can see him even now keeping Rio alive in a tank in this episode.

The "twitching" of Powder's head state reminds me a lot about what happens when you're high on cannabis and I wouldn't be surprised if that feels similar to her. It's like your thoughts and reality melts together / hard to distinguish and you can imagine the same moment that you're in, but then think about someone saying something before you kinda flip back to reality and then you question if what you just thought about actually did happen or not. For her this is probably mostly a permanent state and hyperfocused on her trauma with her old crew / family, haunting her like ghosts.

Mel is probably the most misunderstood character on the show. Her motivations become a bit clearer as things go, but I feel it really takes multiple rewatches while also thinking about how things relate to the real world to fully understand the character.
@DForSpiD2 жыл бұрын
Part of that is because her motivations and intentions change throughout the show. She had the intention of using any means to gain Jayce's favor in the beginning, she seemingly dismissed or denied her own feelings as they grew closer, and she was completely disarmed and taken with Jayce as he opened up to her in this episode, but we can talk more about this when we're up to the later episodes as it's hard to fully appreciate without all the context and I wouldn't want to spoil anything

I completely agree. It was like my 4th or 5th watch through before I realized her struggle was so much more nuanced. She was becoming her mother and it wasn't until her mother actually showed up and revealed her intentions that Mel began to have real dissonance about becoming what she didn't want. That is when she began to transform seriously and make critical "who do I want to be" decisions. She's just such an amazing and nuanced character.

The fact that Jinx chose not to kill Savika - even though she was angry and hurt at the time, to me, suggests a level of empathy on Jinx's part. In most of the cases where she's killed people, they've been faceless strangers, and her method of killing them was impersonal, using ranged weapons and explosives. She never had to confront that they were human beings; and with her tendency to not look at or register death and violence around her, even when causing it, she never felt remorse or even really acknowledged that she killed people (When Silco is yelling at her about the six enforcers she killed in an explosion, she just giggles and says "yeah"). But when confronting Savika, she has a face, it's a person Jinx has known for years, possibly the closest to a maternal figure in her life as Silco's top lieutenant and most trusted ally. Though Jinx clearly doesn't like Savika, and the feeling is obviously mutual, and Savika has just told Jinx devastating news, with glee in her voice even, and Jinx (based on her emotional instability) would almost be expected to flip out and kill her; Jinx doesn't kill her. She expresses her dissatisfaction with both Savika and Silco by stringing her up to the ceiling, drawing and writing on her to demean her. Even though she despised Savika, and likely would've felt justified in killing her, she couldn't do it, because Savika was someone she knew and recognized as a person, with a name and a face. This is a trend I notice in later episodes as well; that when Jinx sees someone as a person, when she sees their face and/or knows their name, it is very hard for her to try to kill them; but when she doesn't have to consider them human beings with feelings and fears, she seems blind to what she is doing.
@ninjatoriumnova24832 жыл бұрын
Yep, that was, indeed, Singed. In fact, he's most likely called that because he got... well, singed, by Powder's bomb. Even though he's a character from the game, we don't know much about him, not even his real name. There's something in Arcane that might hint at it, but that's spoiler territory.
@johnbowersox7382 жыл бұрын
For starters yes that is Synged. One thing that Arcane does better than any other animation I have ever seen is their ability to portray mental states of mind. Whether they are showing how someone can go (and be) crazy or desperation as in back-grounding Victors struggles for his entire life and his desperation with hex-tech.
