I agree 100% with this. And I say this as someone who hates unlikeable characters. I have a rule that I won't watch a tv series that doesn't have any (main) characters that I would want to hang out with if they existed in real life. Quite honestly, I would love to hang out with the vast majority of the main characters of Arcane, and even some of the secondary ones.

I’ll rephrase that, characters are the most interesting if actually-well written, compelling enough and not just pc. Lol I don’t think a one dimensional villain is more interesting than a grey protagonist that has more depth. I would have a fun debate with this guy. (Coming from someone who's favorite character is Silco.) I think characters that have are shown as good at the start make me disinterested because it shows that they don't show their form of growth immediately. I want to see a character that isn't perfect, that has room for improvement, that has ideals that are challenged because it shows how a character truly changes at the end of the show.

Yeah economic freedom? I cam across his videos months ago, I wondered if he was being sponsored by a conservative think tank. In my opinion the primary villain of arcane is Piltover. The epilogues is piltover's violence orphaning two children, probably alot of children (Where are Ekko's parents?). Silco is at best a secondary antagonist that also exists as a response to Piltover's violence and exploitation. A personal antagonist to Vi, a result of the system. Economic Freedom seems to be under the impression that an aristocratic oligarchy can't be bad because they are coded Western State fashion, and thus those who resist it must be bad.

I agree with what you said, but just to clarify, FEE only said those things because he's become tired of this generation thinking that people who do criminal things are okay. He actually likes Caitlyn and Ekko (see his response video), he just wishes they were the main characters, people who stood for taking care of others, so our main role models would be good people.
@CoreVin9752 жыл бұрын
I think I understand and agree with both sides of the spectrum. Both FEE's opinion and Congamez opinion. Both make valid points. However I feel like Congamez makes a greater point here. While I do like characters like Luke Skywalker, I also appreciate characters who have a redemption arc of begining out bad or decent then becoming full blown good people. It's strange how FEE describes dark stories as nihilism. If that were true then Hamlet, Macbeth, D U N E, and so many other dark stories, aren't examples of bad people, in which the author is trying to showcase in order to warn us against. They are instead stories of Nihilism, nothing more, nothing less. And that couldn't be farther from the truth. These stories as I've said are warnings to people, on how to be better by avoiding the same attitudes and actions that the evil protagonist in the story does. Same goes for Religion and the Bible. The Bible for example isn't just full of stories filled with Good people who do nothing more than go through the heroes journey. It's filled with stories of people who went through the heroes journey, went through redemption arcs, or eventually became what they hated the most. It's full of complex characters. But it's not talking about Nihilism. In fact the Bible strictly stands against that thought. It's about setting up examples for morality, and correct ways on how to live, and examples about immorality, and how not to live. Like I said I agree with both sides,I just think that Congamez has a better understanding of the situation.
@stuffynosepatrol2 жыл бұрын
The problem comes from the fact that he seems to lack empathy for any of the characters and disregards how awful their situations are. They are not "horrible people" like he said in the video, they are starving children who stole to keep their family fed and he just didn't seem to understand that. He also made himself come off as almost narcissistic in his responses in the comments where he kept saying that if he was in the same situation as the characters that he'd still be a morally good person despite the circumstances, then he started saying that anybody who disagreed with him was either a nihilist or didn't have high enough morals. He said this both in the comments of his video on Arcane and in his second video on morally "bad" characters in media in a segment responding to the criticism.

in my view, all of Arcane characters are asked the question "How far are you willing to go for ___?" and they struggle so much with this that's what makes them human, that's what gives them depth and makes them interesting to watch I can't see how that wouldn't make them interesting to watch, but that's just my opinion
@terrencemoldern2756 Жыл бұрын
Gotta say man. This wasn’t a solid response at all. 1. when you go off talking about how “most” of media likes to portray redemption arcs now and how you like them a bunch... that’s literally his point. The first words are “Is anyone getting tired of this sort of thing...” and I have to say as an amateur writer and story creator I am as well as many others. Redemption arcs are ridiculously overdone and often not even properly utilized. We’re not asking for goody Disney princess characters though even then that isn’t saying much as Disney has notoriously gone more and more into making “grey” characters akin to redeeming storylines which honestly just goes to show how your side of things is overblown and becoming over saturated. 2. on the characters you bring up as great “redemption” characters. I’m just gonna skip to the obvious. HOW TF ARE YOU SERIOUSLY SAYING ARTHUR HAD THE GREATEST REDEMPTION ARC EVER!!! No he didn’t have any sort of redemption arc. Siding against Dutch doesn’t magically make up for or redeem him in anyway. Fact is, if Arthur had a redemption arc at all. He’d have ratted on the whole gang and died killing them off sort of like John in the first game. But that isn’t what happens. He goes against some terrible people and sides with other terrible people. Sadie for instance is a sadistic butcher who gleefully guts people and she’s one of Arthur’s ALLIES... Honestly this is actually an example of a bad redemption story as Arthur never redeems himself in any way. He never betrayed or backstabbed John or hurt him in some way. In fact, John did when he left the gang first time around. So him helping John and his family get to safety isn’t something he does to redeem himself. Nor does him trying to convince Dutch to side with him redeem him ether. As they are outlaws. Fact is it was under Dutch that Arthur git TB and hurt that farmer. Realistically if he was truly to redeem himself he’d bring Dutch in and turn on the gang that supported him. But he didn’t even do that. So saying that Arthur is a great redemption story is just demonstrably wrong. Great story sure... but that isn’t redemption. 3. You make fun of said person for making it seem like Powder dropped it on purpose. Uhh how do you know? He doesn’t state that is the case or anything. He’s simply explaining the story so far. Just seems like you are stretching to grasp at something to complain about. When all he is doing is giving an account of the story... which is factually true. 4. You then go on crying over his point on wanting to see characters who are just genuinely good. Which I find hilarious given as your only real response to it is “nobody”. When the fact is there are plenty of us who want that. I’m tired of morally grey crap in media. Especially as it is often used as a scapegoat to avoid writing actually complex narratives. There are plenty of people out there who think a story having no clear villain instantly makes it god tier. It’s boring and overused. Every single Marvel movie for gods sake has a morally grey character somewhere in it. Also the irony of hearing you say what separates arcane from the others is potent. No, Arcane isn’t unique or special for doing what literally every other popular show in the last two decades has done. Want an example? Game of Thrones just to name one. Every show with a storyline relating to humans is pretty much expected to have them be like us. Flawed and all. The positives you attribute to Arcane are all what’s basically expected to be in media. Aka, the standard. Arcane isn’t fantastic for following what every single show has done. I can go more in depth but I’d be writing forever so I’ll just leave it here.
@terrencemoldern2756 Жыл бұрын
Btw before I get anything like that. Arcane isn’t a bad story. I like it in fact. It’s just that the praise for it is overblown and the points in this video did little to nothing to debunk the guys arguments to whom he supposedly responded too.
