Until Dawn is the scream of horror games especially when it came out originally completely changed the genre then they had no idea to follow it up and nothing has topped the original k i'm gonna watch scream and play until dawn

In my opinion, another big factor in why the games they made after Until Dawn just don't live up to it is not only the writing, but the acting. The acting in Until Dawn in phenomenal, meanwhile the acting in every game they made after that ranges from awful to good, but rarely anything stellar. I'm going to chalk that up to the fact that Sony gave Supermassive a big budget, but actors such as Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, and Brett Dalton truly bring their respective characters to life and make them so memorable. I'm not sure if it's the direction, the actors, or both, but there have not been many similarly memorable performances compared to the characters I previously mentioned.

I wonder if it’s because the anthology games are rushed so they don’t have time for reshoots because most of the big starts like will poulter and ashmore are all good actors but seem strangely wooden Unless they are just not used to the Mocap

Personally, i completely ENJOYED sn2. The pacing was fine for me. Arcane season 2 builds on sn1 without handholding you, no filler, no fluff, no over-simplification, no over repetitively *FORCED* toddler-ish "comedy" and no spoon feeding while encouraging deductive participation from the audience/ viewers to follow the plot complimented by an ABSOLUTE BANGER of hyper-cinematic induction all culminating to higher immersive experience. There are many online still scratching their head about how or why Silco and Vander became buddies again in the alternate timeline yet they COMPLETELY forgot about the LETTER from Vance addressed to Silco IN SEASON 1 which Silco never read in the main timeline so it becomes BLATANTLY OBVIOUS that he read the letter and "found the will to forgive" in the alternate timeline. Brilliant compact and impactful writing. But instead many are demanding to be spoon-fed. The only main issue for me (personal bias) is the finale should have been longer and bigger battle filled will much more multiple character moments AND we should have SEEN how Ekko united Zaun after saving Jinx including seeing Jinx make a new arm for Sevika. Also we never got to know WHO the other leading families of Piltover are but i am okay and content with what we got on screen. Especially considering how INSANELY EXPENSIVE the budget was (Arcane sn1+2 budget= $250m, most expensive animation ever) so it's understandable how and why they made the writing tight and compact while giving the audience some participatory deduction and generate interest to research into the lore. What they delivered is still very peak in my opinion. We all wanted more eps but there is cost-benefit situation with that. Perhaps in future projects they could make each ep 10mins longer from 40mins-50mins then the final can be like 1hr. This can be a perfect middle ground to give more time to more avenues of the plot without adding more full eps. It might cost a little more but still significantly LESS than making additional FULL eps. Either way, both Arcane sn1+2 have been incredibly amazing. Both get at LEAST ABOVE 9/10 rating from me irrespective of whatever flaws each season has.

You can see the paper Ekko burns says “der” so its powder. But since jinx is probably alive it’s either him saying goodbye to powder- the girl she once was or the AU powder- or jinx just didn’t tell him she survived

My top list of Supermassive games that I played so far 1. House of Ashes: I really enjoyed the mystery surrounding the creatures, all of the main characters were sympathetic or had nice character arcs 2. Until Dawn: Same thing I can say about it, it's their scariest game, however while the twist was interesting, it didn't really make sense plot wise. I also didn't like that there were too many characters, therefore some barely got any screen time 3. Devil in Me: Good cast of characters, not too many of them (which is good), but the villain had inconsistent powers and felt nearly unstoppable, I liked the different endings and the mystery though. I also appreciate how they tried to improve the gameplay, but it was a little buggy Mediocre 4. Man of Medan: Not the best cast of characters, some annoying, some uninteresting. The plot twist undermines the whole story, except for some character developments here and there. The bad 5. Little Hope: The biggest wasted potential in the series, a plot twist that makes what happened in the story completely irrelevant, interesting mystery that only exists in one character's imagination 6. The Quarry: Half of the characters were likable, the other half seemed lifeless. The worst scenes in the whole series and the dumbest decisions by the characters, laughably bad dialogues at times

ok but in my opinion the quarry actually improved with one thing you mentioned here, and that is the characters and their personality. Every character in that game had a very clear personality and natural-feeling dialogue. because... let's be real with ourselves here, the dialogue in Until Dawn wasn't always STELLAR, especially not at the beginning when the characters were still being set up and introduced to us. I'll never get over how Beth went from "Hannah! 😨" to "Where 🤖is🤖my🤖sister🤖going🤖?" in the same sentence, or the whole conflict between Jessica, Matt, Michael en Emily at the start... I haven't met a single person who didn't get slightly confused about those interactions. The Quarry gave us dialogue and character interactions I could see me and my friends having too, the goofing off especially being a part of why I feel that way. It feels more natural, is what I'm saying... but it really feels like in the Quarry that's all they put their focus on. Right after the radio shack scene, when the mystery of the werewolf finally gets revealed and shit is supposed to get REAL scary, it just...... doesn't deliver. There IS no real horror in the Quarry. It's like, entry level horror for people who can't play more intense horror games. It's ALL character and no plot/suspense. You can make the most charming characters, but if you don't put them in a coherent situation, that's all they'll be. THAT is what Until Dawn did right!

As for whether Until Dawn (2024) is a remake or a remaster while it feels more like a remaster because not much has changed drastically it does technically qualify as a remake because the game was literally rebuilt entirely on Unreal Engine 5. The original was designed on Decima which is a much better engine IMO. All the Decima games look beautiful and run great. UE5 while produces beautiful visuals it has numerous technical issues as seen by multiple games they have been made on UE5 so far. Hence why this remake actually runs worse than the original. OG runs at 60fps vs remake at 30fps. While I don't hate the remake and do believe they improved some aspects, I personally prefer the original more as I didn't like some of the changes especially the score and the O' Death intro being removed. As for the new epilogue ending it is definitely setting up the sequel being done by PlayStation Studio Firesprite and the voice is Dr. Hill as the actor pretty much acknowledged the sequel on his instagram. Lastly SuperMassive is not beyond Sony's budget in fact Sony cut ties with Supermassive Games because the studio went behind there backs shopping around their prototype for Until Dawn 2 to other publishers when it was supposed to be for Sony. This prototype would eventually became the Quarry though. Sorry about the long comment but I enjoyed your video and hope you do more Until Dawn related vids.
@ajpetix
@ajpetix 2 ай бұрын
That little tidbit about the UD2 prototype becoming The Quarry sounds very interesting and I'd love to know if you have a source for that. I agree with pretty much everything you said - UE5 is a rough engine to put a game in these days because the overhead cost is just so high and for the most part the new soundtrack is a nice change from the original (although I have to admit I'm a sucker for the manic string parts in the OG game). It's a shame that Supermassive and Sony had a falling out because they're stronger together than apart.

I disagree on Until Dawn Remake... The atmosphere is worse and also the new ending is meaningless. It makes the story a lot "less" in general just to make a sequel even though the story has obviously already concluded (just like Life is Strange). Also the sound effects are HORRIBLE and the game is 100% less scary than the original

To me i cant even view the dark pictures and quarry on the same level as until dawn or even made by the same company. The quarry writing really reminds me of early drafts of until dawn. It used to be a cheese fest where they had no idea what to do with the direction of the game most of the time. Especially seeing how the game was in development hell since 2008, they really got lucky the final product ended up being that good.

Supermassive's games need three things: compelling mystery, likeable characters, and well written branching paths. Until Dawn did its mystery and characters so well that they struggled to follow it up. The Quarry did a great job with making the choices matter, and the cast was extremely likeable. House of Ashes was solid all the way through. But these games unveiled their mysteries way too quickly. Little Hope had an intruiging mystery, but the characters were extremely boring, not to mention the cheap ending. I hope the second season of Dark Pictures is a step up in writing and game stability.
