Before I watch the video, just noticed 10.5K subs... that is just impressive, for a Linux channel that talks mostly about Arch... that is amazing and you are a great teacher, so I just hope it continues to grow. I always send people back to see your channel and I've had people installing Arch that were newbies in Linux. Yes, with your videos.

Always nice for beginners to get such a good tutorial. With regard to getting the uuid into grub: You already said in previous videos that there are many ways to do this. With the following method you can shave off 1 minute (19:11-20:12) of installation time by opening /etc/default/grub with vim, and in command mode write: :r!blkid /dev/vda3. Have a nice Christmastime and hopefully you can enjoy time with your family.

Great tutorial. I have been following this for my Arch installs, although recently I discovered ArcoLinux-D (which I now use to get to a base install). I then install KDE Plasma instead of i3. One of the differences I noticed between a base install of Arch and a base install of ArcoLinux-D is the hard drive decryption takes longer on ArcoLinux-D. Other than that, everything else seems to work exactly the same (which I love).

Hello Ermanno. Thank you so much for this review on both installation and configuration procedure for Arch Linux OS. I was wondering: the large majority of online tutorial propose a 3-level partition scheme as EFI, Swap and root partition respectively. This means you do not recommend creating an home partition? Since Arch is considered unstable distro, could it be useful prepare it to protect (furtherly) the user's data? I am not sure, however, I do not know any OS installer which do this. Are Linux's User used to this?
@eflinux
@eflinux 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stefano! Thanks for your comment. Creating a home partition is definitely a valid possibility. I don't usually create on my machine because I save most of my data externally or on a secondary drive. I am using Arch as my main distro now since more than 1 year and didn't have any issues with it. In my experience Arch is actually quite stable, but it is a high maintenance distro, meaning one needs to really take care of it, update it, tuned it and keep it lean and clean for it to work at best.
@stefanomedici2752
@stefanomedici2752 3 жыл бұрын
@@eflinux - Great! In Windows, I found quite uncomfortable to have two diffing separate partitions addressed to root (:/C) and user's data (:/D). It was unclear the benefits to choosing this set-up. However, with MacOS, I have realized the real advantage of it: upgrading the machine is simpler and safer or restore it without any data-loss. So, I think I'll do it this way. I feel like to install it correctly. Thank you for your experience!

To anyone having this same issue, the problem occurs when you use /dev/mapper/ UUID instead of /dev/ UUID. Simple mistake to make, but it had me confused for a little bit. for eg. lets say your device is /dev/vda3 and when unlocking with luks you name it cryptroot, if you run blkid you will see an entry for /dev/mapper/cryptroot and /dev/vda3, use the UUID for /dev/vda3 not /dev/mapper/cryptroot. When updating /etc/default/grub you will put "cryptdevice=UUID=:cryptroot root=/dev/mapper/cryptroot" and this problem will be resolved.

@@eflinux Hi Ermanno :) I did what you told me and error no longer pops up. I also had this error with: NetworkManager-wait-online.service I have no idea where this came from since I never enabled it or started it or whatever but just disabled it so it no longer pops up. I guess it doesn't hurt anything if it is disabled. People on the webs said that it is benign. I have another question for you: On the following link I have uploaded 3 images regarding my question. we.tl/t-Vz9w6b0ZEh When I had Windows 10 installed that little LED light would turn red at the either 15% of battery life or 10%. White light means it is charging. Now that I have Arch installed and once the battery was at 13% and you can see from the monitor that it is red - there is no red LED light. Do you perhaps know how to solve this also? Thanks a lot! Samo

I have done this 13 times now in a virtualmachine on both a laptop and a pc and on real hardware, even with two different bootloaders. Grub and systemd and always the same result it saids it cannot find the uuid of the decrypted drive when it hasnt even asked for the decryption password yet. This is the weird part even when deleting all references to the wrong uuid out of the grub.cfg it still gives the error looking for the wrong uuid. This leads me to think that grub uses a different config file, other than /boot/grub/grub.cfg. Btw that is a really quick response. Glad to see you still take care of comment sections of older videos. Thank you, i subscribed!

I might have theory, I just haven't been able to test it yet. I am mounting the efi partition, that isn't encrypted to /boot/efi, but when starting the system the configuration for grubs lives in /boot/grub/grub.cfg. Can it be the case, that it is looking for the configuration in the root device which doesn't exist because it is encrypted and thus, can't find it? If so, it should be fixable by mounting the efi partition to /boot so that the grub cfg is on the non encrypted partition.

Apropos encryption. Have you already tinkered with systemd-homed? I watched Lennart Poettering's presentation (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXjJoneue7uMeJY) and I agree with everything he says there, especially portable home directories that can be encrypted. I've thus far either encrypted my entire disk or only home but making encryption work with systemd-homed is extremely easy. You just need a standard arch install but don't set up a user just yet. After the installation, you enable systemd-homed and create a new user by issuing: homectl create YOUR_USER_NAME --member-of=wheel --storage=luks If you like, I'd very much welcome an in-depth installation, especially with portable home dirs. I've not yet tested it because the requirements described in the arch wiki are manifold.
