This is great, thanks so much for the tutorial. Worked perfectly. I'm not sure how much I'll be in Arch, but as a learning experience it was quite easy and it's nice to have an all-purpose stripped down Linux VM for random testing. The only thing I had to do differently was to manually disconnect the mounted ISO from the Parallels CD bay before reboot (otherwise would not dump me out at grub screen).

Hi Mr. Ermanno...hope you are in great health and spirit. I was inspired to get into Arch primarily because of you, LearnLinuxTV and DistroTube...its been a really pleasant experience ever since. Lots of thanks for your unending support to the Linux community in particular and Open Source initiative in general. I particularly like your way of making videos where it is 95% general instructions and just a little bit of personal choice. It leave a huge field for us to explore and choose from..yet have the instruction video relevant to whatever choice we make. Hope I am not asking too much...but would it be possible to do a new Artix installation using OpenRC? I am sure I can do it myself...but its informative to see your take in it. You don't have to show us any repeatations that you already covered before, just anything new and updated that we have to keep in mind.

I would be very tempted to buy a Mac if I could run Linux natively with no issues. I know Asahi is trying to accomplish this but it would be nice if Apple made it somewhat official and added bootcamp back. They could also release documentation to help people create drivers for their silicon.

Yea I'm following Asahi closely too. If it still cant run the M1 at nearly 100% when my savings acccount say its ok to go buy it lol, it's literally gonna be the 2019 macbook pro instead (last intel afaik), just to run linux. Say what you want about Apple, but their hardware, well specifically the keyboard, touchpad and screen, is by far superior everything else i seen still.

How would one delete the ArchLinux from parallels? When this is done does that also remove the grub boot menu?

Also 1 tip don't try to change settings before the installation with parallels if you do it breaks the iso

I had been running Arch Linux with KDE Plasma for many months after using your install process. With latest update I get the black screen of death when booting up. Are you having any problems with latest Plasma release? I also did a complete reinstall and it worked for about a day, then the same problem occurred. I will give it one last try and if that fails, will try another desktop besides plasma.

This can be achieved for free using UTM instead of the expensive Parallel. I use Arch Linux ARM64 everyday on my M1 Mac Mini under UTM.

Did you install arch with UTM just like he did in the video or did you installed it in another way? I'm asking this because I tried to install arch with UTM doing exactly what he does but it doesn't work. When I finish the installation, everything starts again, nothing changes. I'm clueless since I have no experience with Arch or Linux in general

I can use Parallels for free over and over if you uninstall and reinstall with a new account, was able to play Fallout New Vegas all I want that way 🤣

The issue I'm encountering with this method is that when rebooting post-install, grub or systemd-boot simply reboots into the install ISO with no option to run the new installed system. Installing from the ISO on a removable drive and then removing the drive post install throws the system into the GRUB shell (or its systemd equivalent) either way, the system cannot boot the new install.

Interesting video, Ermanno. Thank you. I'm just sorta wondering out loud WHY anyone would want to do this? I've seen posts in various forums that you will lose at least some of the functionality of the Macbook/Air when installing the Linux kernel (irregardless of DE) to it. Now, I'm NOT a Mac user so I don't know, but I'd sure like to know why people would want to do this. I'm not trolling here, I'm just super curious. Thank you! 😃

Hi! This is actually installed as a virtual machine, so for the functionality of the machine everything still depends on macos, as on x86 a virtual machine in VirtualBox. At the moment only Asahi Linux is running on metal, but it is still in alpha and not everything is fully working yet. However, since Macs with T security chips it is true that some features are not available on Linux. That started around 2016.

Never used macintosh with linux. Can someone explain more about this parallel desktop feature? So if i boot up the mac will there be a question to chose which operating system to run or arch will only run if i use parallel application?

Think of Parallels Dekstop like Virtualbox, only it is not free.

My M1 Max didn't work either. I can login, but before login I get a message "failed to load reglatory.db". I managed to move forward but after getting everything started I rebooted and got that same message with Login prompt but no ssdm. I logged in and ran ssdm, but that only locked up the system. Not sure what's going on yet.
