Since I live in the desert in Arizona, I understand the need to reduce water usage, and a green lawn uses a ton of water. This landscape will be much better for the environment, plus it will be easier and less time consuming to maintain. I do miss green lawns, but I’ve really come to love the desert and a Mediterranean landscape. I think this guy is literally an an artist!!

But the problem with that is that all the stone will heat up. Therefore, they actually forbade this "stones with few plants" design in Germany because it heats up the cities. But I get that you also have to reduce water consumption

@@tf3655 Actually light colored stone reflects heat and stays comfortable, it's dark stone that gets hot. I have stepping stones both light and dark and it is color that determines temperature.

@@b_uppy often they have dark stones. Bees don't find flowers in these gardens. They measured grassy laws vs stone ones and had several degrees difference in temperature. Plants have a cooling effect. SO it makes totally sense to forbid them, especially in a country that usually has enough water.

Am I the only one that liked the “dirt” that everyone seems to hate? When I went to this restaurant/farm in Mexico they had the dirt as well and it just looked so natural and complimented all the desert plants! It looks like a beautiful little oasis

As warped says, it is NOT, dirt. But more like a very compacted sand. It would not be muddy even after a hard rain. These are called "fines". Loam and clay is very muddy, fines contain none of those.

When you live in California, you know that it is just not ethical to be watering a lawn when you are in a drought vulnerable state. And, we oftentimes have restrictions on when you can water grass (when we were in a bad drought) and so it would be a financially risky move to have that much grass, only for it to die during a bad drought.

This is GORGEOUS!! I love the care shown to balance both the aesthetic and sustainability aspects of this redesign . And good riddance to that grass! From the comments I can definitely see how ubiquitous people think lawns and grass should be and don’t realise how much labour and experimentation (and legislation!) has gone into making useless water hungry lawn grass seem like standard greenery. This is a wonderful time to reframe your ideas for the good of future design and home building.

I was a bit suspicious of getting rid of the grass because I think greenery calms the eye and the soul but seeing how the furniture was placed. And the landscape was shaped it turned out really nice. I love the pink flower on the wall of the house. It really gives the whole space a Mediterranean touch and the pergola is a beautiful add on!!

Been following Jules since her beginning in fashion blogging and this backyard is so her aesthetic and style. I love how Erick designed her backyard. Big fan of the sand/stone/terracotta. Really reminds me of Spain. The greenery that works well with the heat and Californian sun is such a good choice. Also big fan of the giant dining table and mix of cozy cushions and metal HAY chairs.

This is gorgeous, but a few opportunities were missed. One thing he forgot is hidden storage for the cushions for weather issues and for the patio cups and utensils. I think an enclosed Cart instead of the open small table would of been a better idea. If it were me I would of saved a grassy moment that moved through the space. Loved the pots and plants. And where is the BBQ, every back yard needs a place to cook, there was plenty of room left to create a small area for it and make the back space more usable. Other wise everything has to be carried down & back, to & from the table each time. Love the large slab and wondering what type of base he used? Loved the seating spaces he created. How about an outdoor shower close to the house, lol just dreaming. I love color so I would of added a few more pots & garden areas of color. Great home and enjoy the outdoor space!

This is definitely a missed opportunity for a collaboration with a Landscape Architect or Landscape Designer. The planter beds and plant choices were lacking a bit of the ‘wow’ factor in my opinion. I would love to see a collaboration or project with a landscape architect on this channel. Also the ‘lavender’ in the video is actually Russian Sage….similar color, fragrant as well….but different plant! I loved the designer’s enthusiasm and outdoor furniture choices, the planters looked great as well. Sincerely, Plant nerd & landscape architect.🤓

He is definitely out of his element. And it is just one big patio. INTERIOR designers never can do exteriors well. I bet it never occurred to him to put a very slight pitch on that table slab, just for example. A very small lawn area would had made a huge difference, and a good area for for toddlers. The area that he was going to put a bistro chair might have been a good location. A circle or oval there lined with that rock and then, soil and grass might have worked and no mole problems and you can keep your eye on the kids in the center easily. That interlocking retaining wall is horrendous, and that pathetic "water feature" was at least 5-7K alone. So now they are going to use it everyday and he removed the BBQ? It looks like behind the raised deck against the house would be a good space to hide the BBQ and be convenient. "Passion" and "wanting to create MOMENTS" do NOT equal good solid design.

Everything in the USA is expensive. I could build 2 modern 3 bedroom flats with landscaping and land cost included at that price in my country. However, I love the end result though. Absolutely gorgeous compared to before. The only reason I wouldn't do away with grass in my yard is because my dog and cat love it! I will however love to merge what his did with my grassy yard, half and half!

Yeah on the other hand, if you watch home renovation shows like Fixer Upper you're gonna be surprised at how cheap everything can be if you don't focus on going for the most luxurious things. With the stuff they do on these renovation shows (like $ 8,000 for a bathroom including tiles and all that) I could only get half of that in my country :D

The awning was a great idea for sure. The black-and-white stripe was perfect. Updating the lighting was a good idea too. I would have revamped the walled-in areas by simply adding more indigenous, flowering plants and left out the pebbles entirely. I would probably have changed the grassy area to clover if I could do so without killing the gophers. I may have added a shade tree somewhere and would have planted a vine to climb along the wall of the back house (creeping fig? jasmine?). Bougainvillea is beautiful but very pervasive. Potting it makes absolutely no sense. I would have likewise redone the BBQ area, but I don’t like how he walled it off. It felt cut off from the rest of the garden. I like the herringbone tile, but would have instead done small pavers, maybe in a herringbone pattern with grass growing between them. I also would have narrowed the wooden steps because they take up too much space. The CB2 furniture was an excellent choice. The concrete table is cool too. If more seating areas are needed one can always set them directly on the grass; I don’t get why people feel the need to remove it. I like being barefoot outdoors and prefer grass or clover 🍀 to gravel under my feet. Personally, I wouldn’t want all that furniture in my yard at all unless I’m throwing a party. Otherwise, 90% of that stuff would be stored away.

Spectacular result. An oasis I would never leave! The olive green Hay chairs are perfect-- a pop of color from nature that keeps them from being overwhelming. Someone, PLEASE tell Erick to work on his upspeak-- the upward inflection at the end of his sentences. ⚡ In Los Angeles, to have a backyard that large, you must keep to the design style of the home. Previously, the owners modernized and darkened a Spanish-style backyard. The colors were too intense, and the elements were not sustainable. When you look at Erick's delicious designs, it became lighter and airy because of the sustainable elements. Also, notice the Xeriscape - no mowing nightmares. Regardless of the zone (Cocktail, Dinner, or Firepit), he nailed the nuances of each area. My only offer of improvement are few: • The Dining Chairs can match the scale of the stone Dining Table. Fortunately, chairs are not a permanent element. She can swap out at anytime. • The BBQ Grill needs a home more than self-sufficient grass patches (period). Overall, the greatest testimonial is seeing her family unite. The kids found their area, immediately. Adults can be free to reminisce and celebrate new memories. That's exactly what you desire, when hosting your loved ones. 🤩🌿🌳🍸🍹🍧🌻🌻🌻

I just read through the comments. What is the obsession with lawn? They are not drought tolerant and take a lot of resources to look good. And they have lots of bugs (and gophers) and make me itch. Getting rid of the lawn in this garden is a spectacular transformation.

I love it 🖤 As someone with a big family myself, it’s a perfectly set up space for entertaining a lot of people and I’m loving all the furniture and design choices he made. Once all the plants start to grow bigger it’s gonna make it green and lush looking without the gopher holes and the need for excessive watering.

Superb transformation! Excellent flow, great furniture and styling. The garden now matches the style of the house. You just want to spend all your time there. Removing the grass was clever (water guzzling and labout intensive).

@N D That's not dirt, that's decomposed granite, which is a bit different. DG resists pests digging in it. It compacts nicely while allowing water to perk in, too. It will not be muddy when it rains. Suspect you'd like this better once the plants mature and grow in more.

Great job! I like that everything makes sense to the space and is practical. Most people design to make it look pretty “for the gram” but if it’s not functional - it’s useless. Beautiful work!

People saying they wish it wasn’t dirt and wish there was more of a “floor”… I’m trying to imagine a tile that wouldn’t be too distracting. Based on the rest of the backyard, his choice also matches really well with the rest of the color scheme. Looks like a perfect LA home backyard!

I love this! It looks beautiful and is exactly what I would love to have if I lived in LA. Lawns are not a natural part of Southern California ecosystem and cannot survive without excessive watering- it is bad for the environment! It is so much better in a hot dry climate to have a lawn-free yard and embrace greenery that naturally grows in that climate!!

Ha really this update is meant to be as low maintenance as possible. Having a nice and green lawn means to upkeep and actually having to work on keeping it that way.
