What a gorgeous building! My in-laws honeymooned there for two weeks in 1941, right before he shipped off to WWII. He bid her farewell at the hotel, and asked that she not accompany him to the train station. Fortunately, he returned home safely. They spent 40+ years together!

Sincerely Eccentric i mean...... It is literally right next to the park. If people are staying there, as guests, it’s Bc they’re visiting and doing s bunch of stuff including going for walks and jogs in the park. If they live there in the 63 million dollar apartments, they’re gonna be casual sometimes. I understand what you’re saying. Whenever I’m in the general vicinity of the plaza, I’m usually more dressed up. But that’s because if I’m there it’s because I’m going to some event or a dinner or even just a movie at the Paris and I specifically like to always dress up.

Not to sound silly but the hotel costs as little as 500 a night and it's not even the fanciest hotel. You would look out of place dressed up. This isn't Orange County its NYC. Go for a run in the park then eat dinner at the restaurant.

I was curious as to why Alfred Gwynn Vanderbilt wanted to stay at the Plaza, so I looked it up. His parents lived right across from the Plaza in the largest house ever built in New York. Even though his parents' home had 154 rooms, Alfred liked the idea that he could see his parents whenever he wanted, but he could also get away from them when he'd had enough of them.

My husband and I have a similar arrangement: love each other dearly but we're both fiercely independent and enjoy our alone time. We also keep wildly different schedules. I've got the big "together" apartment and he has a separate place nearby where his studio is. A twist is ours being an open marriage so it also keeps things from being awkward for our respective partners though everyone's on the same page about our situation.

Glorious! Such memories! In the summer of 1996 we walked into the Plaza lobby off Central Park pushing our just one year old daughter in a stroller. Such an overwhelming sense of history. She freaked out passersby because she hadn't any hair yet, but she was able to talk to people as we went by. In May of 1999 we toured Versailles with our now ~4yr old and 14 month children and saw the some of the architectural inspirations for the Plaza I believe some of the opening scenes from North by Northwest with Cary Grant take place in the Plaza Hotel and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade passes right by the Plaza entrance. Iconic indeed! Thanks for the history of the Plaza Hotel.

nougatbitz I think it is because architects are afraid to use a pencil. They are chained to the computer which diminishes their skills. Then they struggle to create even a half decent building. Architecture is dying.

My sister works with migrant farm workers in CA, and they do backbreaking labor, live in makeshift conditions (as many per shack as they can pack in) and have no benefits. All so we can have cheap produce. Between what I've seen there , and the cages, I hope they do stop coming--and let us pay $3/apple.

My 1st stay at the Plaza was in 1974. We had a beautiful and very large 1 br suite facing Grand Army Plaza. In the 1980s when I lived in NYC we used to go to the Plaza after the opera for hot chocolate and cake in the Palm Court. I also loved going to the Oyster Bar on the 58th St side for lunch. It was looking pretty sad by the late 1980s but looks wonderful now.

I stayed there for 2 nights in 1997. yes we felt compelled to dress at least nice casual. The staff could not have been more accommodating. Anything we wanted, they provided. Including a chauffeured limousine to take us to a Broadway show.

My Mom took me to tea at the Palm Court many times. Incredible space. I seem to remember, however, that the Oak Room was open to Ladies for lunch well before Betty Friedan because I remember being in there once as a teen well before 1969. We also had lunch one time in the Persian Room. One of the things the Plaza did every year was to place a huge, beautifully crafted, chocolate Easter Egg in the lobby.

I stayed there in 1999 July with my husband right before we move to Houston. 4 nights, 5 days. First we went to restaurant for brkfst and they said that we need to change our shorts if we want to eat there🙄so we did and actually liked that little rule which makes u understand that at Plaza, still somethings comes from nostalgic times and we respected. It was a wonderful time. 2 years ago I had a wonderful champagne and caviar treat for St Valentine's and again, it was very nice. Now ourdays, everything is so fast consuming and confused with rhe values etc, every once in a while, to experience this novelty is priceless.

Private clubs still maintain these dress codes. I once invited a guest for breakfast at the Union League and they made us leave because she had on trainers, same at the In & Out in London-- and that's only for breakfast! Imagine if we went in for dinner.

I was lucky enough to stay at that two story suite. I got drunk during super bowl and apparently booked a trip for the whole family. We had an amazing time. It’s definitely one of the most grand hotels I have stayed at. I loved the balcony in that two story suite and the office area. The food is also amazing there. The service is top notch. Too bad it’s closed right now. So sad.

Gorgeous and was hoping you'd show that painting of Eloise which I saw there in the late 1960s when I was a fashion illustrator in NYC. I used to hang out there a bit and had to meet a business associate there at one point for a freelance job! I love the Palm Court, fabulous ceiling! I remember Capote's Black and White Ball, that was a big event written up in Women's Wear Daily and other publications! I agree with what someone else said here, the Plaza is no place for scuffy jeans, dirty sneakers, backwards baseball hats and hard hats! Show some class! Dress elegantly when in an elegant place! As a Jaguar XJS specialist and growing up in NY and spending a lot of time in the hotel, I remember several years ago reading that the last guest was an XJS owner and the building had been sold and was being converted to condos. I dined there many times, used the business center and would use the phones around the back near the 57th St. entrance to make business calls making appointments back in the late seventies. Back when the phone booths in Manhattan where the best with a fan that would come on when you closed the door.

Thank you. Possibly the most famous Hotel in the World! Such history; such cultural significance! I delight in it! I do have to say that I long for the days when guests of such a fine hotel DRESSED in a manner to reflect their surroundings. I get it; people want to be modern and ‘comfortable’; BUT there is a difference between being ‘comfortable’ and looking like a slob. One CAN dress comfortably, and not look sloppy.

Besides The Great Gatsby, Home Alone and Eloise, the hotel is also featured in another work of fiction the Hitchcock classic North by Northwest. Great post. Do The Racquet and Tennis club, the private club on Fifth Avenue designed by Stanford White. The interiors are amazing.

I think it’s a terrible shame that the plaza was turned into a residential building. It was such a wonderful living thing with thousands of employees. Now, the people who call it home don’t even spend much time there so the hotel feels very empty. I’ve stayed in the new hotel several times, even though I live a few blocks away, because I love the hotel so much. The Waldorf is also being turned into a residential building so that too will never be the same.
