While I firmly believe that there in no such thing as the mythical "perfect" form, there is such a thing as good form and there is bad form. Perfect form is just someones interpretation of someone else's idea of what perfect form should be. It's something subjective and personal to the archer. Good form is built from the basics and a good understanding of fundamentals. While there are folks out there (those on the international target scene for example) that may look like they are all doing it perfectly and the same, I can guarantee that each one of those archers is going through their own individualised shot cycle and trying to achieve a mechanically perfect shot for them. It's easy for people to look down on us Traditional Archers with our weird and wonderful ways of shooting. But when shooting the way we do our styles and systems are adaptive. It's rare we get to make the same shot more than once, rather than shooting at a set distance at a set size of target. It's all the more reason to have our own solid form that we know works for us. But is there a "perfect" way of doing it? No not really... Just what's perfect for you. You do you!

James, Jim, Jimbo, my man. Did you even think about Grey Archer or Morten Jacobsen when you made this? Those two are the gold standard and you know that deep, deep down. Also, why are you driving on the wrong side of your car? Good stuff and it is something many "Trad" archers need to remember.

glad to hear that I'm not the only one thinks of form in this respect. But can I ask, can form be bio mechanically sound and unsound ? and can bio mechanically unsound form be bad for you? even if you are making your shoots?

Hey Jim, thank you for your thoughts, i really love you videos. Maybe a litte thing i would add is that every time a shot goes way off and you know exactly what was different and you know what to correct, then you have your own definition of whats the form one should have him or herself. I think this applies to your concept of solid form.

I was taught that the proper anchor point and release is to bring your finger to the corner of your lip and bring your hand back as you loose the arrow. My anchor point was always resting my thumb under my jaw and my hand stays in that same spot when I release. That's just the way I instinctively did it and I was far more comfortable and consistent that way than the proper way.

Thank you Jim, spot on. Archers amongst them should be more generous to archers who shoot different bows or different styles, the Internet is such a great platform but also an arena for the worst in humans. My worst mistake starting up five years ago was chasing somebody else's "perfect form", wasted thousand of arras doing so. Best example are probably my teenage sons. When they occasionally hunt stumps or rubber animals with the old man, they just pick up their bows and nail it. They start missing and doubting themselves whenever I start lecturing......

I agree, I see so many world class archers, be it traditional, recurve or compound who not only break the "form rules" in fact some demolish form rules. In spite of this they win world level matches year after year, if it works for you more power to you. 👍🏹

Good one, Jim. There is good form, but even the best mess up. If it works for a person, repeatable, accurate, good for them. I find that if I work too hard at 'perfect' form it goes away it gets worse. By the way, did anyone tell you that your steering wheel is on the wrong side?

Not being over bowed will help develope good form, nothing wrong with a 40# smooth pulling bow to develope good form. It's definitely more pleasant to stump shoot with and that's some of the best form of practice.

As long as I consistently hit what I aim at.... I’m a happy camper. I can stack arrows in tight enough that I destroy fletchings and nocks. I can care less what people think of my form.

Some...many...will try to "correct" someones form in order to raise themselfs up or to mess with the archers head if they are shooting in the same class as them. Theres one Shropshire archer known for it but he doesnt talk to me now since um..I dont talk to him.

krs48 I am an instinctive shooter, but currently I am trying going back to shooting three under. (It’s how I started) but there is a common misconception that you can’t shoot three under and still be instinctive, which is nonsense... The reason why I’m shooting three under is because so far this year I have made over 2600 traditional bowstrings every single one of them by hand, shooting split finger for whatever reason is causing me a lot of hand pain... i’m finding shooting three under a little more comfortable. I’m currently planning a video on the subject :)

Colin Law it’s just something I’ve been trying out... so far I’ve handmade over 2600 traditional bow strings this year. And to be honest Colin, it’s wrecked my hands. I’m just finding 3under a little more comfortable and a little less painful for the time being. But to tell you the truth, it doesn’t make the damnedest bit of difference to my shooting :) I find it funny though, how some folks say that because I’m shooting 3 under I’m not shooting split finger any more 🤦‍♂️

I agree about the form. We are all shaped different. WE have different hands. One thing I do not get though, is those who hold their barebow, recurve or longbow straight up and down. All I can think, are these are those who need to aim, and cannot with the bow canted??? I have always canted my traditional bows since I was just a pup, and shoot instinctive. I see those narrow shelfs on a longbow when it is canted, as a "V" to launch that arrow from. Perfect every time, and no fear of it falling off. We each have our own methods, and as long as you are hitting where you are looking, that is all you need to worry about, but if you are having issues, then you might ask about your form, or how you hold or release your bow.
