I am extremely curious as to how you found this out; I for one still believe the last song was Nearer My God to Thee, based on the following evidence- 1) Personal testimony from close friends of Wallace Hartley said that he had mentioned that if he were on a sinking ship, that would be a song he would have played 2) Songe D'Automne was not in the White Star Line songbook for the musicians 3) The only person who recalled hearing Autumn was junior Wireless operator Harold Bride; many more passengers recalled Nearer my God to Thee. Furthermore, it seems the only time he ever brought this up was in an interview with the New York Times. 4) One passenger, Archibald Gracie, denied hearing NMGTT in his memoir, but that doesn't necessarily prove it was Songe DÁutomne. All this being said, at the same time as a man of history, I am willing to keep an open mind, and if you have found more evidence that points to this song, I am curious as to what it is.
@jeanscuissiato1358 жыл бұрын
frankydman One thing I like to add to this is that even that this song was not on the White Star Line songbook they could have played very well since if for example somebody during an tea evening asked for an song that was not in that book and they knew how to play theres no reason why they wouldn't so they could play any one of the 300 songs that there were on the book plus any other that they knew from other companies or songs that they learned on any other place. Second thing is that this guys have access to exclusive sources that may not habe been trown to the public so maybe they found an testemony or prove that it was Songe D'Automne. And by the way it could be Nearer my God to thee and THEN Song D'Automne because in my eyes if you say what song is the last you're not specifically saying that the other was not played. But if Nearer my God to thee appears it will be the British version not the American one

Watching this with the help of Titanic Honor and Glory. It rather hauntingly beautiful with the Titanic footage. It so real and sad so see the iconic ship slowly sink into the darkness of the waters. Amazing work! I love how you and the Titanic team is able to create these feelings. Just amazing work of art.

4 years after this video came out and I am only halfway done on my journey to learning this arrangement by ear. So far I have the melody and basic versions of the chords down, except for the loud middle section, and I have added some of the smaller melodic details in to my playing. Hopefully it won't take me more than 6 years to get this one piece down, but I have a feeling it'll be longer. Wish me luck!

I'm discovering this fabulous interpretation today. It's really amazing: far more interesting than the original piece in my opinion. Can you please tell me what were your main inspirations? I want to discover more of this type of music. Does this genre have a name to start with?

Thanks Samuel. I can't believe I uploaded this more than seven years ago. How time flies! I'm not sure about inspirations or style... I just started improvising over a lead sheet and left the camera running. I've listened to a lot of Bill Evans and Brad Mehldau, but my playing is much different than theirs. Thanks for your kind words.

Is it really important what the very last song played by the eight Titanic musicians was? No. What’s important is that they played music to keep the passengers calm and avoid a panic during the evacuation. These men were as brave as any of the others among Titanic’s crew (although they were counted as passengers in 1912). As brave as the officers and sailors who chose to help lower the lifeboats instead of reserving a seat for themselves. As brave as those among the engineers and electricians who chose to stay below decks and keep the power for the lights and wireless going. As brave as the wireless operators remaining at their post sending the distress call until the Captain relieved them... “You have done your full duty, you can do no more. Abandon your cabin... look out for yourselves... That’s the way of it at this kind of time...” May the names of bandsmen Wallace Henry Hartley, John Law “Jock” Hume, Roger Marie Leon Bricoux, Georges Alexandre Krins, William Theodore Ronald Brailey, John Frederick Preston Clarke, Percy Cornelius Taylor and John Wesley Woodward be forever remembered for their bravery and self-sacrifice.
