THE GREATEST BUILDING EVER! Architecture CodeX looks at what Michael considers his favorite building and perhaps the greatest building ever built. The Pantheon, an outstanding Roman Temple, is unique in its construction and its impact and there are special emotional reasons it is Michael's favorite.

Some of the best explanations about the Pantheon I've seen on KZbin. Question though. The theory about the oculus distributing the compressive forces and making them spin around the circle, is that a well established theory? Or could it be that the concrete is so strong, that it's irrelevant if there's a hole in it or not? Kind of like if we make a hole in the top of an egg shell, the shell "dome" won't collapse. It doesn't matter to the egg if there's a hole in it or not. Which do you think is the more likely explanation?

The compression ring is well established structural theory and used on a lot of domes - Nervi's Palazzetto della Sport: acx #52 , the Astrodome: acx #79, etc. To say the concrete is "so strong" is to say, it has great compressive strength and poor tensile strength - which is why the compression ring analysis works. Thanks for asking and watching!

@@architecturecodex9818 I watched both #52 and #79. But what I'm trying to understand is how a compression ring works. Does it really divert the forces in a circular direction, as if spinning around the ring? I'm actually making a video about the Pantheon's oculus and I want to make sure I myself understand it fully. Any chance I could email you?

@@JordanAmit The simple answer is it must since we see the hole in the Pantheon. Perhaps it might help if I note that concrete, like any material, has a sort of internal friction, a cohesion, that makes it act monolithically (as one stone.) In balance, there would be no failures - but out of balance the internal stresses would cause cracks. We see them all the time. So, imagine a 6" section of the concrete pushing inward to the oculus hole and the two adjoining 6" sections having enough internal friction, to hold it back. Spread that through the ring in 360 degrees and you have your balance. Does this help?

@@architecturecodex9818 Is it useful to think of it as 2 horizontal arches with their "feet" against the other arch's feet? But these arches are present in all degrees of the circle. No matter how we look at it, there are always 2 arches butting against each other and holding the compression of the dome squeezing them together, inward? As if the double arch is preventing the dome from collapsing inward?

@@JordanAmit I can keep trying to type something but this is KZbin and so someone has done a video about it. Maybe this would help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHuQpaKMm5hmms0
