It must be wild for to reflect back on this part of your life. I wanted to be a marine mammal trainer from when I was very young, but got the chance to see orcas and belugas and dolphins in the wild and changed my mind. Seeing them like this, in concrete tanks living an artificial life, confirms I made the right choice. Now onto a master's degree in sustainability :) lol

My impression was that dolphins did tricks without command because they've learned to associate the tricks with food. This is a reinforcement that trainers have actively encouraged. This means that every time a dolphin performs a trick, they get food. Well I think dolphins do tricks when trainers didn't tell them to because they're hungry. They think that performing one will = food, but this isn't always the case.

Do the dolphins and whales do tricks to entertain themselves when the trainer isn't working with them and there is no show? Are these things they enjoy? They look like they are enjoying themselves... thank you for sharing your videos.

do you think it is possible to allow these performers free and continue to feed them out in the wild --could you have the show off a boat or something out is the sea? crazy idea but I wondered if this could be a way to help with phase out...

To the best of my knowledge they do this in Japan. It's just as bad, the "open sea pens" are as small as that place in sea land of the Pacific and I think they are put in holding cells so that they don't escape at night. "Sadly, we heard that all 24 dolphins being kept in sea pens in the harbor died as they were thrashed against the rocky coastline." During the tsunami. save japandolphins.org /blog/post/cove-volunteers-safe-after-apocalyptic-experience-taiji-dolphins-perish This stuff is so barbaric.

Animals get fed daily, but positive reinforcement is just a euphemism for exploitation. Trainers use food as a leverage to get an animal to do what they want. If dolphins weren't kept hungry before shows, there wouldn't be a show at all.
