From 98 to 2004 was the Andy Chambers era I was a part of. Hearing Tex explain that time in GW's existence like he did reminds me those *were* the golden years. Before the late 2000s to early 2010s fall, the lore, the rules, characters, errata, etc. was comprehensive, flowed much better overall, and formed a more cohesive, organized narrative temperature for the universe, regardless of holes in logic.
@grayfiresoul3 жыл бұрын
@Druid Of Scosglen Exactly. I used to amass codexes for those reasons. Third edition Eldar was my first ever army, and I remember being awed by everything crammed into the book for its size. What's important to get across here is that there's a massive pandora's box of thens vs. nows we could get deeper and deeper in to. There are so many more points to make about other topics, it'd just make the old guys more depressed, and make the new kids wonder if they're even a member of the same hobby we're talking about.
@richmcgee4343 жыл бұрын
Chambers was hugely influential long before 98, but the company was less universally known in the 80s and the early-to-mid 90s were full of growing pains for them. I can remember Chambers and Johnson showing up at our (upstate NY) local game store to pimp 1st ed Epic Space Marine simply because it was one of the first stores to commit to carrying the full GW line back then. Different times, different management, and effectively a different (and much better) company.
@grayfiresoul3 жыл бұрын
@@richmcgee434 Chambers was with GW for about 25 years on and off, I think - I could be mistaken. I want to say I remember seeing the occasional White Dwarf on some store shelves here and there in 97, but then picking up an issue in 98 and seeing Andy there in an article for a battle report. It's been a long time and I'd need to go through the stack of 90s WD I have to find it. I wasn't there in 1990, but even from my starting point eight years later, it's been one hell of a continuous downhill.

As someone who decided to make their own setting, seeing Warhammer die is still a bitter hatred. Sure, it opens more space, but at the same time it's something that's inspired and amused me for decades and through the darkest times in my life. It's a tragedy, and a furious one.
@DreadnoughtFiend3 жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity what's you setting like?
@Deadsnake9893 жыл бұрын
I'm in a similar boat. I've been building a universe for 20 years now that was originally based off of Starcraft, which in itself is a Warhammer clone. But after I discovered 40k through Dark Crusade, I drew a lot of inspiration from that universe when fleshing out my own universe. For example, my equivalent to the Imperium originally wasn't religious. I actually didn't really have much motivations for them, other than they were fighting against a force that wanted to exterminate them. But that was only a workable motivation for a single story. So eventually I made them like a space faring British Empire, who felt they had a divine mandate to enlighten the rest of the Galaxy. I also had a faction who originally were nothing more than 'flightless Avian's who are physically more frail than humans' but the Tau gave me the idea to mech them a tech savvy race that used drones and mechs to make up for their physical short comings. The list goes on as to the different things I took inspiration from 40k from.

I heard about this from Tex getting attacked. I'm not a big fan of Arch's (just a voice thing, although I understand he is a luminary in the 40k community) though like both 40k lore and Battletech lore, and have recently become a huge Tex fan. Top cross-over lads.

Man tex is the broken artist, that fights the dark with his art. And arch the man who is hated by all, yet fights for what matters in the universe we love. Never before did I need to hear these two titans together, but now I know what it means be a noble soul.

as much as i hate to see warhammer die, considering its the giant of tabletop games, perhaps its for the best. Die a hero and allow other franchises a chance to flourish, or live a villian and stifle every form of competition.

Oh, great collaboration. I love Battletech and I loved 40k, up until maybe 2006. Got lured back with the new Dark Eldar models, but it didn't last long. I still remember all the people who gushed about the transition to plastic: "Every unit will come with 20 models. Every character model will come with a sprue of all the equipment it can use. Everything will be better and cheaper." I'm still laughing. In some way I like plastic, because I always enjoyed modifying my models and making them unique, which is easier with a softer material, but GW's stance on modifications and 3rd party parts was always horrible.

@@mikehendon7327 worst part is, GW just released the shit I really like. I love the high elf line (except the moo-elves. Mountains are awesome) for the ancient battleline aesthetic, a mass of pikes. After having bought them and played them on TTS, there is no way 10 of them is worth $60. Now they are teasing some amazing scults for dragons and dragon riders, stuff I been wanting since they dropped the old High elf line. Gonna look at those two games. Used to play GW informally when young - when they were still the "outsiders" and we all rooted for them. Got older. Joined a new group and took my old models. Got told my models were not allowed because they were not canon and the equipment on the models did not reflect the equipment on the list and some of the models weren't fully painted (they were undercoated). Never played or attended a Games Workshop game since.
