Re stopping: I've done an emergency stop in my FUV in an actual emergency and it did *really* well (in slushy snow even!). Thanks to the FUV's three wheels, we have the stability of an automobile during an emergency stop but only 1/3 that of a typical automobile's mass. This means there's only 1/3 of the momentum to dissipate in order to come to a stop. Finally, unlike a car, you have both regenerative braking *and* three wheels of disk brakes. The result is a stable and quick stop in an emergency.
@EVResource2 жыл бұрын
Excellent point Tyler! As you could see, once I learned exactly how much (or how little) of the friction brakes I needed to use, I got a handle on the emergency stopping fairly easily. And I was impressed! The FUV does VERY well.

I do love how well it does in the rain despite being open-sided. Would still prefer canvas or plastic sides as an option for the more extreme weather. There are many stop lights in my area and we get frequent rainstorms accompanied by wind, so I picture being drenched occasionally at least at a stop. Been caught in the rain many times here, and even with cover its often had to avoid being soaked. Love the vehicle, but I'd have to get canvas doors made if I bought one. Great review!

I have had my FUV for about six months and have driven in the rain several times with no problem. The FUV is much dryer and as you say has less wind than a motorcycle. I live in the deep southeast, which has frequent thunderstorms. If you get hit with one of these, a strong side wind will soak you.

@@EVResource I live in north Florida, so I am able to drive/ride all year. I use my FUV for local trips. A few times when it was really cold or rainy I used my 17 year old van. In my semi-rural area, people do walk up an ask about the FUV. I like to say that I get 100 miles on $4 of electricity. Have to admit that at stop lights I like to accelerate ahead of other traffic (after checking Left and right). I did make one mistake. In a pasture I left the brakes on. Before I realized my mistake, I had plowed a hundred yard furrow with my back tire locked. Now that is torque.

I have an eBike and don’t need any battery assistance on the way into town. It’s literally down the mountain all the way down to town, 5 miles away. But coming back up the mountain to our house, I need battery assistance, especially on the steep areas. If our gasoline powered vehicles were manual transmissions, I could put them into neutral and kill the engine and coast all the way into town and would hit speeds around 45mph. I’d be afraid that I’d get too cold before getting into town as our winter daytime temperatures are around 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Also we get 5-7 feet of snow every winter and if the county hasn’t plowed the roads yet, it simply wouldn’t make it. Thankfully we drive an Outback and Forester. Our pickup is also a 4WD.

A few drawbacks that I can envision is, what happens if a car or truck splashes up muddy water or a stone ? I would at the very least have either button up plastic doors or zips up on the sides. It definitely would protect you better. Plus, if it starts hailing you don’t have any protection from it.
@EVResource2 ай бұрын
Are you comparing the two experience to a car or other motorcycle/autocycles?
@trevorhilyer2 ай бұрын
@@EVResource Many years ago, I worked for the post office and we had old crappy jeeps. Anytime it rained, water would come through any areas with a gap, the brake pedal, gas pedal and the door. Then there were the times where someone going fast through standing water could create a tidal wave of muddy water. Then the most memorable incident happened during the summer. We got a severe storm that had golf ball size hail that pelted everything. People had dents in their car, dealerships had multiple cars with dents, home roofs were damaged. Luckily my new car was parked in the parking lot at work and didn’t get hit, but others were not as lucky. I was in my truck on the route and the area I was at got grazed by that hail storm. I closed the windows and waited for the storm to pass. I have also been in rainstorms that were slashing sideways, I had to keep opening and closing the door to deliver the mail on one side of the street. That vehicle should at least have a heavy plastic shower type curtain at the very least. Then at least you have something to cover the sides. Even modern day Jeeps have coverings for the weather. Our weather patterns are getting worse because of climate change, not better. Even a rolled up vinyl plastic that could be unrolled if needed, would be better than nothing there.

There is very little rollover risk. I know this from pushing it to the limit on the track. I was able to lift one of the wheels, but even then, the FUV was stable and I was able to recover quickly. The factors that help with stability are the two wheels in front (vs. in the rear like some three-wheeled vehicles) and having the battery very low to provide a low center of gravity. There was never any time, even with quite spirited driving, that I felt a risk of rollover.

Burning gasoline is the exact thing this design is meant to avoid. Very damaging! Hey Martin! This isn’t a car. It’s more comparable in this way to a motorcycle. As someone who rode motorcycles year round, my point of view is coming from that perspective. Yes, with warm layers it is a very capable vehicle on the cold and rain! Is it as “comfortable” as a car? Of course not! But cars don’t provide this experience either. Your claim is false, Starfish. An integral part of the vehicle concept is a very safe fully tested and certified roll cage and 6 point harness. With this we need no helmets or air bags or doors to enjoy the same level of safety small cars offer. The first collision has already proved the safety, a 35 mph t-bone collision totalled the car while protecting the rider who wore no helmet. He walked away with only bruises. A motorcyclist would heve been killed or at least lose a leg. The middle roll cage pillar did not bent as it rammed through the front of the car into its engine block. The car's license plate wrapped around the pillar.

It most likely is fun to drive but in the Pacific Northwest rain, not viable. Rain comes from all directions and the odds are you will get wet dispite the video bias. The video showed a light rain. I'm sure it was cold and miserable. I also don't like that it is exposed interior and it would get tampered with. I wouldn't leave anything inside it. Many owners are in the PNW. Tell us how this is not far more dry, safe and comfortable than any motorcycle. There is no 'inside" to this vehicle unless you buy the optional locking trunk or the Deliverator. Half a billion motorcycles have no doors or windows and yet they are deemed worthy transportation. I stay bone dry in mine in a downpour. The wind pressure keeps the water off of the driver seat. For me, and 500 other owners, a light rain jacket is all we need in rain and it is not raining 100% of the time. Hours of light mist are just as common in the PNW.

I’m sorry to be disappointed in this company and others that market their vehicles for fun and pleasure. If we are making a transition to electric transportation this vehicle will only serve a few and not overall. It does not address weather. It’s funny that it comes with windshield wipers but the development stops there and it seems you are left with an incomplete vehicle. It’s too bad it’s not practical for me living in the Northwest where it rains. As a company from this region, the design of this vehicle should have addressed this problem by simply incorporating a removable side panel or tarpaulin system for complete weather protection. Unfortunately they are not marketing to the masses. And if they did, this vehicle will make a truly functional commuter. I will not buy it until then. My Harley serves me well for the excitement and thrill I need.

There are numerous owners in the Northwest. The factory is located there. We all learned that we stay totally dry in heavy rain as long as the vehicle is moving. Doors are just dead weight. Millions of motorcyclists who now hate the rain no longer have to wait for dry weather. The most you need is a light rain jacket if you don't want your elbows damp. Harleys emit both noise and exhaust pollution and they are not nearly as safe.
