I finally managed to get my vacuum chamber working, and run the Tesla coil in it! Awesome effect on arcs, but RIP Tesla coil!

2:29 Pro-tip: don't ever turn the vacuum pump off before re-pressurizing if you're using a rotary vane pump like this. The pressure difference can suck oil backwards through the pump and cause issues over time. You might also end up with oil vapor in the chamber.

Clean undamaged glass tolerates compression very well which is why it did not implode. Put a scratch or a nick into it and it might very implode. Pressurize it to 1 atmosphere putting the glass into tension and it will very likely explode. Please stop throwing metal objects at vacuum chambers. Dear Mehdi, Electrons do not glow on their own. With a roughing pump, at best you can get down to 1E-3 Torr which still is not a great vacuum. At this pressure, there are still many many nitrogen and oxygen molecules in the glass. Just did a back of a napkin calculation and the average distance between the molecules at this pressure is only 300 nanometers! So, the light that you are seeing is still coming from the air molecules. To be more specific, nitrogen creates a purple plasma and oxygen creates a light blue plasma. This is so awesome to see that you created an ion drive propulsion in your vacuum jar! Keep up the great work.

It makes sense that the glow gets better and larger as the pressure drops. The glow you see from any electrical discharge is the atoms of the gas in question (in this case the standard atmospheric mixture) get hit by the incoming electrons which provide the necessary energy to turn the gas into a plasma, which then tries to dissipate some of that energy as light. If you drop the pressure but maintain the power output you are essentially distributing the same amount of energy over fewer particles (keep in mind that a "perfect vacuum" is impossible, even in space there are gas particles floating around) so each particle gets more energy which they still have to dissipate (b/c thermodynamics tells us that anything with more energy than its surroundings is going to want to get rid of that energy until it reaches equilibrium). And so you get longer, brighter arcs.

Also the atoms (or molecules) are getting attract to the cathode. Thats the principle of a fusor reactor, you make a high vacuum inside, and then let tiny amounts of deuterium and helium³ inside it. With the high voltage on the cathode the atoms are getting attracted there and pressurized. Because of that they heat up and tada fusion.

If you look at the sparks in normal atmosphere, they are bright blue-ish white. In vacuum they are dimmer purple. That means they are indeed shifted to higher energy.

For noticeable x-rays, you need at least 20kV at 30mA, and the only source for that is an x-ray transformer, a microwave oven transformer or a neon sign transformer won't create x-rays. Also, his vacuum is not that good if you want x-rays you'd also want a better vacuum. And there will always be air inside unless you spend thousands of dollars on vacuum pumps, and even when you have a $300 two stage pump and a $1000 thermo-molecular pump you will still have a >10milliTorr pressure, very low, but not 0.

When I think about a vacuum Chamber I remember one of those Open Days at my school, where you tell potential new students how cool your school is; I was in the chemistry lab, with about twenty guests, between Parents and 13-14 years old kids.
