Electroboom, Great build. your brushes rubbing on the belt causes the belt to become more and more conductive in time. The brushes are actually optimal when a 1/4 inch away from the belt. The brushes pick up charge via electrons flying off the belt, not by physical contact.The rubbing brushes will lower performance drastically, and, shorten the lifespan of the belt. Hope this helps! Another thing that can help increase spark length, is add an internal heater at the base of the tower. Seems like a bunch of work, but just an extra hour or so to put it in. Thanks for the video (and I usually spend a full week on my episodes as well, but just dress the same every time to give appearance of a one day film)
@victoryu65705 жыл бұрын
How would the heater increase spark length?
@St0neyWanKenobi5 жыл бұрын
@@victoryu6570 doesnt heat add more resistance to currents? Or does that only apply to metal
@markus80305 жыл бұрын
@@victoryu6570 The heat raises the average kinetic energy of the molecules which makes them move around faster. This leads to an easier ionization of the gas as some of the ionization energy required, is provided by the kinetic energy and therefore by the heater. Furthermore this makes it easier for electrons to get of the pvc pipe and onto the pantyhose (for the same reason, but this time lowering the additional energy needed for the work function not the ionization energy). see also Thermionic emission and work function (I am not 100% sure about this)

it is indeed a very high voltage (therefore the arc) but in a very low current over a tiny bit of time. very big voltage number multiplied by a tiny current number = very tiny power (watts) and yet its over in a tiny instant, dropping the risk of tissue damage to very low levels. it would be actually dangerous if it was an constantly fed current through is body (like regular AC mains power) there is a better related explanation in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqmyf42Zd6-ba6M

My brother and I built a simple, but fairly successful, van der Graff generator while in high school nearly *fifty(!) years ago.* As I remember it, he did most of the work (he was *13* at the time!). He submitted it for a science fair at his school, and then I *re* submitted it as a senior year physics project at *my* school. As I remember it, we mounted two large empty wooden thread spools at the top and bottom, *inside* of a 3" O.D. clear PVC tube. We got our ideas from a Scientific American collection of science fair projects published in the early sixties. The book also contained homebrew plans for a device to demonstrate NMRI, as well as a *particle accelerator!*

Yeah at the very worst a bad cut probably just a scratch. A saw like that won't accidentally cut off you finger.

This is brilliant! Thank you! Including the missteps is the best part! THiS is reality. Nothing worse than the edited "nothing ever went wrong" videos on the internet. It makes everyone feel like losers unless they do it perfectly the 1st time. That other dude's video was probably problem free...which led to other people having problems! Show the pitfalls! Show the missteps! This makes your stuff stand out. This is my 1st video...and I've subbed and liked! Take care!
